The ongoing global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, known as COVID-19, has disrupted public health, businesses, and economies worldwide due to its widespread transmission. While previous research has suggested a possible link between environmental factors and increased COVID-19 cases, the evidence regarding this connection remains inconclusive. The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not there is a connection between the presence of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and meteorological conditions and COVID-19 infection rates in Bangkok, Thailand. The study employs a statistical method called the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) to find a positive and non-linear association between relative humidity (RH), absolute humidity (AH), and rainfall (R) and the number of verified COVID-19 cases. The impacts of the seasons (especially summer) and rainfall on the trajectory of COVID-19 cases were also highlighted, with an adjusted R-square of 0.852 and a deviance explained of 85.60%, both of which were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The study results assist in preventing the future seasonal spread of COVID-19, and public health authorities may use these findings to make informed decisions and assess their policies. © 2023

Climate change is recognized as the largest threat to global food security and there is an urgent need to address the impacts on agriculture worldwide. In Bangladesh, a developing country hugely dependent on agriculture for poverty reduction has become the worst victim of erratic climate. Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) is a new integrated approach to transform agri-food systems towards green and climate-resilient practices, first introduced by FAO in 2010. In countries like Bangladesh known for vast arable land with the potential of growing resilient crops, CSA opens a new horizon by recognizing crop diversities and climate resilience at the grassroots level. The study explores and assesses the effectiveness of existing CSA activities adopted by farmers in five physiographic regions of Bangladesh. The perceptions on CSA are still rudimentary at the local level, and there is limited to no clear concept of its practices and established techniques. The lack of coordination among stakeholders was observed as a major constraint in promoting CSA, and inclusion of farmers of all levels and timely dissemination of climatic information will facilitate the implementation of CSA in Bangladesh. Since CSA methods have not been properly established in Bangladesh, further research and development is necessary to formally introduce CSA at the grassroots level as well as the administrative level. © 2023, The Authors. In this study, p-type spinel CuCo2O4 nanomaterials with abundant oxygen vacancies were synthesized by a facile one-step solution combustion method, and their sensing characteristics have been investigated. The p-type CuCo2O4 sensor shows a high response of 11 to 1 ppm O3 and low responses (3, NO2, SO2, and 1000 ppm ethanol, methanol and acetone) at 90 °C in dry air, indicating a superior selectivity. The sensor also possesses a wide O3 detection range from 10 to 3000 ppb and good repeatability. More importantly, the relative humidity (RH) could promote the electrical response to O3, and the response to 1 ppm O3 only deviates from 24 to 27 as the RH increases from 50% to 90%, benefitting for practical applications in ambient humid air atmospheres. The humidity enhanced response for p-type CuCo2O4 could be ascribed to the competition of hole carrier reduction, O2− active sites reduction and O3 decomposition promotion induced by the hydroxyl groups. © 2022, The Authors. Context: Food security is highly reliant on agricultural activity to drive the world economy. However, this activity is in great danger due to climatic changes and improper use of irrigation techniques. Consequently, the lives of numerous individuals worldwide are in jeopardy. In light, this paper investigates the promise of smart irrigation systems based on new technology. Objective: To meet the growing demand for water in agriculture, this study presents an intelligent irrigation system that uses cutting-edge technologies of (1) cloud computing, (2) embedded systems, and (3) Internet-of-Things (IoT). The main objective is to demonstrate how this innovative strategy can effectively manage water resources, supporting food security through cutting-edge agricultural technology. Methods: This paper proposes a smart irrigation system based on cutting-edge technologies like the embedded system, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing as a groundbreaking strategy to improve food security through the implementation of advanced agricultural technology. This system supervises real-time monitoring of crucial environmental factors such as (1) moisture, (2) humidity, (3) temperature, and (4) water levels, in smart agriculture practices. In addition, this system employs the latest sensors, including the module (DHT22), water level sensor, and moisture sensors, which are connected to the widely used embedded system (ESP32). The system uses the ThingSpeak cloud and ThingView app to enable wireless communication between the device and the farm owner, enhancing their interaction. The automated control of the two water pumps is based on the readings of various environmental factors. Moreover, this will also present a mathematical-driven function known as linear interpolation to calibrate the water level sensor in percentage. The concentrated solar-driven pyrolysis of biomass (sawdust) was examined in a fluidized bed reactor with 0.15 mI.D. and 0.3 m bed height, using cristobalite sand as bed material. The fluidized bed a reactor was fitted with in-bed tubes, filled with a phase change material with phase change temperature of 450 to 475°C. Four, 5 and 9 tube-inserts were examined. The solution with 5 tube-insert was experimentally demonstrated to considerably influence the bubble sizes and frequencies in the reactor, leading to an enhanced heat transfer from the irradiated reactor wall to the fluidized bed, and from the fluidized bed to the in-bed tubes. The steam assisted pyrolysis produced between 40 and 55 wt% of high-quality biochar (BET $\gg 100 m^{2}$/g), about 20 to 25 wt% of oxygenated bio-oil and the balance as syngas. The operation at moderate temperature and with steam injection drives the pyrolysis reactor towards biochar production. In using the PCM-ballasted inserts, the temperature could be narrowly controlled within the selected operation range, whereas it was also possible to maintain the temperature at the required level for 15 to 20 minutes during non-sun periods.

Estimation of material properties of metal matrix composites using finite element method in the presence of micromechanics damages

Metal matrix composites have growing importance in aerospace industries. Composite materials are heterogeneous in nature and require large number of homogenized material properties to carry out the structural analysis at macro-scale level. The values of these properties change as a function of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. In the present work a micromechanics model subjected to unified periodic boundary conditions is developed based on the Finite Element Method. In the first part of the work, Representative Unit Cell (RUC) is developed for a healthy case; the estimated material properties for this case are compared with the existing literature values. In the second part of the work, the micromechanics models having micromechanics damages like interfacial debonding, fiber cracking and matrix yielding are developed following the concepts and methodology used in the development of healthy RUC. The developed RUC model with micromechanics damages is based on the cohesive zone surface and failed element concept for modeling interfacial debonding and fiber cracking or matrix yielding respectively in the finite element framework. This model is analyzed to estimate the deteriorated elastic moduli in the presence of these micromechanics damages.

With the major development of sensor technologies and advancements of communication network infrastructures, there is a growing interest to add more intelligence in the e-health monitoring for facilitating an effective healthcare system. While IoT devices are capable of continuous health-parameter sensing and providing notifications to the user, an effective business process management (BPM) facilitates effective system integration and data processing workflow. This paper proposes an efficient framework for managing emergency situations (specifically, health-related) through the analysis of heterogeneous data sources. The proposed framework, named CLAWER (CLoud-Fog bAsed Workflow for Emergency seRvice) aims to bridge the gap between process management and data analytics by providing an automated workflow for personalized health-monitoring and efficient recommendation system. Here, the IoT devices are used for collecting the movement and health data. The smart phone can act as an edge device to acquire data with user movement information. The accumulated data is initially processed inside the fog device, and finally the analysis and recommendations are generated by the cloud. In this paper the indoor health-status of the users are analysed in small cell cloud enhanced eNode B, which is used as fog device. The generated recommendations are stored in the fog device to provide the recommendations to the users with low latency and in timely manner. The experimental analysis of CLAWER yields better precision and recall values than the existing methods.

Carbon black (CB), which can be prepared by environmental pollutants such as waste tires, rice husks, feedstock oil, and coal tar, presents an overcapacity phenomenon. Further increasing the new applications of CB will help alleviate the pressure of environmental pollution. Here, we employed CB to selectively transport photogenerated carriers in silicon solar cells and broaden its application in solar cells. When used as the back field for p-type silicon solar cells, it achieves a power conversion efficiency ( PCE ) of 22.35 %. Similarly, when CB is incorporated as a component of the p-n junction in n-type silicon solar cells, it yields a PCE of 21.70 %. Such high numbers in the first study demonstrate the potential of the CB contacted silicon-based solar cells. A CB film with such high work function (6.3 eV) is obtained. And the CB/Si heterojunction can be fabricated using a simple, scalable doctor blade coating at room temperature and pressure. Large-scale new applications of conventional CB materials in the photovoltaic field help to realize the sustainability concept of green chemistry.

The intrinsic insulation and drastic volume change of the red phosphorus during the 3-electron alloying process greatly limits its widespread applications in sodium-ion batteries. Here, we report a monomicelle-directed assembly approach for controllable synthesis of monodispersed mesoporous polypyrrole (PPy) nanospheres, which allows for the shape-preserving conversion into N-doped carbon with regular mesoscopic pore and high surface area, thus affording a high dispersion of red phosphorus during melt impregnation process due to the available diffusion apertures and strong molecular chemical anchoring. Moreover, the theoretical calculations further revealed that positively polarized pyridine N atoms in N-doped mesoporous carbon nanospheres can empower comprehensive regulation of red phosphorus adsorption by strong chemical binding. Benefitting from the above advantages, the resultant red phosphorus host for sodium-ion batteries delivered an outstanding reversible capacity of 856 mAh/g with a capacity fading rate of only 0.025% per cycle during 1000 cycles at 1.0 A/g. This work provides an effective approach based on monomicelle-directed assembly engineering of carbon-based phosphorus hosts for advanced energy conversion and storage systems.
