A highly efficient on-chip acousto-optic modulator is as a key component and occupies an exceptional position in microwave-to-optical *** thin-film lithium niobate is preferentially employed to build the suspended configuration for the acoustic resonant cavity,with the aim of improving the modulation efficiency of the ***,the limited cavity length and complex fabrication recipe of the suspended prototype restrain further breakthroughs in modulation efficiency and impose challenges for waveguide *** this work,based on a nonsuspended thin-film lithium niobate-chalcogenide glass hybrid Mach-Zehnder interferometer waveguide platform,we propose and demonstrate a built-in push-pull acousto-optic modulator with a half-wave-voltage-length product VnL as low as 0.03 V cm that presents a modulation efficiency comparable to that of a state-of-the-art suspended counterpart.A microwave modulation link is demonstrated using our developed built-in push-pull acousto-optic modulator,which has the advantage of low power *** nontrivial acousto-optic modulation performance benefits from the superior photoelastic property of the chalcogenide membrane and the completely bidirectional participation of the antisymmetric Rayleigh surface acoustic wave mode excited by the impedance-matched interdigital transducer,overcoming the issue of low modulation efficiency induced by the incoordinate energy attenuation of acoustic waves applied to the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two arms in traditional push-pull acousto-optic modulators.

This paper proposes to represent the floating-point multipliers required to perform IDCT implementations using a rational Diophantine (i.e. ratio of integers) approximation with a common denominator, which is not necessarily a power of two. A case study to support this proposal is presented by applying the proposed scheme to Chenpsilas IDCT algorithm. Results show better performance when applying the proposed scheme compared to the traditional shift process. Similar studies can be obtained for any other potential up-scaling factor, and by modifying any other potential IDCT fast algorithm.

The latest video standards such as ITU-T H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 10 introduce important bitrate gains but at the cost or increased complexity, especially at the encoder. One important tool is the variable block sizes motion estimation/compensation, which presents the possibility of using blocks ranging from 16times16 down to 4times4, offering the choice of one macroblock configuration out of 259 modes. This paper suggests a new method to select efficiently one variable block sizes partitioning mode based on a single set of motion estimation results at the smallest granularity (4times4 blocks). The results show the accuracy of the decision method, while requiring a minimal number of searches from the motion estimation algorithm. The technique also maintains an acceptable complexity for a potential real time implementation

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on a plug-and-play dual-phase-modulated coherent-states protocol

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol using dual-phase-modulated coherent states. We show that the modulation scheme of our protocol works equivalently to that of the Gaussian-modulated coherent-states (GMCS) protocol, but shows better experimental feasibility in the plug-and-play configuration. Besides, it waives the necessity of propagation of a local oscillator (LO) between legitimate users and generates a real local LO for quantum measurement. Our protocol is proposed independent of the one-way GMCS QKD without sending a LO [Opt. Lett. 40, 3695 (2015); Phys. Rev. X 5, 041009 (2015); Phys. Rev. X 5, 041010 (2015)]. In those recent works, the system stability will suffer the impact of polarization drifts induced by environmental perturbations, and two independent frequency-locked laser sources are necessary to achieve reliable coherent detection. In the proposed protocol, these previous problems can be resolved. We derive the security bounds for our protocol against collective attacks, and we also perform a proof-of-principle experiment to confirm the utility of our proposal in real-life applications. Such an efficient scheme provides a way of removing the security loopholes associated with the transmitting LO, which have been a notoriously hard problem in continuous-variable quantum communication.

Pilot-multiplexed continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a real local oscillator

We propose a pilot-multiplexed continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) scheme based on a local local oscillator (LLO). Our scheme utilizes time-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques to dramatically isolate the quantum signal from the pilot, employs two heterodyne detectors to separately detect the signal and the pilot, and adopts a phase compensation method to almost eliminate the multifrequency phase jitter. In order to analyze the performance of our scheme, a general LLO noise model is constructed. Besides the phase noise and the modulation noise, the photon-leakage noise from the reference path and the quantization noise due to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are also considered, which are first analyzed in the LLO regime. Under such general noise model, our scheme has a higher key rate and longer secure distance compared with the preexisting LLO schemes. Moreover, we also conduct an experiment to verify our pilot-multiplexed scheme. Results show that it maintains a low level of the phase noise and is expected to obtain a 554-Kbps secure key rate within a 15-km distance under the finite-size effect.

Carrier-phase estimation for simultaneous quantum key distribution and classical communication using a real local oscillator

The simultaneous quantum and classical communication (SQCC) protocol is an appealing protocol since it allows continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) and classical communication to be implemented simultaneously by using the same communication infrastructure and on a single wavelength. However, the main challenge of the SQCC protocol is its low tolerance of phase noise, limiting the transmission distance under the real local oscillator (LO) design. To eliminate the phase drift without the aid of the reference signal, the classical carrier phase estimation (CPE) algorithm in the field of coherent optical communication is employed for phase recovery and data extraction. Besides, the power of the residual phase noise in classical communication and the power of the excess phase noise in CV-QKD are derived, including the effects of the employed laser linewidth, the transversal filter length, and the classical signal power. On this basis, the performances of the SQCC protocol under the trusted and the untrusted phase noise model are discussed, respectively. Our work confirms the feasibility of the CPE algorithm in the SQCC protocol and demonstrates the conditions required for this protocol to operate on a coherent optical communication system.

Atmospheric effects are the chief threats to the quantum properties of propagating quantum signals and may degrade the performance of quantum key distribution seriously. As one of the most important parts of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), a parameter estimation method has not been specially proposed in an atmospheric channel, and usually the security analysis is based on the assumption that the relevant parameters, especially the excess noise, have been previously obtained. Here we propose a parameter estimation method for Gaussian modulated coherent state continuous-variable quantum key distribution over the atmospheric link, and we investigate the impact of the atmospheric channel on the estimated values of the parameters. Based on this method, we study theoretically the effect of link fluctuations on the achievable secret key rate of CVQKD under different practical transmitted conditions. The results show that this method is unified with the physical model and can effectively resist entanglement-distillation attack. The proposed method fills in the blank of parameter estimation for implementation of practical atmospheric CVQKD.

Recently, several practical attacks on continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) were proposed based on faking the estimated value of channel excess noise to hide the intercept-and-resend eavesdropping strategy, including the local oscillator (LO) fluctuation, calibration, wavelength, and saturation attacks. However, the known countermeasures against all these practical attacks will inevitably increase the complexity of the implementation of CVQKD and affect its performance. We develop here an asynchronous countermeasure strategy without structural modifications of the conventional CVQKD scheme. In particular, two robust countermeasures are proposed by adding peak-valley seeking and Gaussian postselection steps in conventional data postprocessing procedure. The analysis shows that the peak-valley seeking method naturally make the schemes immune to all known types of calibration attacks even when Eve simultaneously performs wavelength or LO fluctuation attacks and exhibit simpler implementation and better performance than the known countermeasures. Meanwhile, since the Gaussian postselection is able to resist the saturation attacks, the proposed schemes are secure against all known types of practical attacks.
