Vajranŕtyam: a Phenomenological Look at the Cham or Lama Dance as a Meditative Experience

Across cultures, in most parts of the world, one come across traditions that employ unique and unusual pedagogies as skilful means (termed as upāya in Sanskrit) to powerfully craft and re-craft our lives and in realizing the self. Using creative meaning-making, individuals evoke wholesome ideas and then motivate their personal selves to perform to them. The Vajranŕtyam or Cham is one of the unique expressions that has been employed from immemorial times to holistically convey the phenomenon of the dance form as a skilful spiritual tool. While the authors recognize that other cultures too engage in spiritual dances as skilful means, here they dwell in greater length on Cham dance or the Tibetan Lama dance, which is performed in the traditional Vajrayana or Tantric schools of Buddhism in India, Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal, and Tibet. With the advent of various contemporary influences, there is an observable change in the attitude towards the traditional, impacting its pure form. Whether it is undesirable or acceptable is a matter of reflection in another place, yet there are some observations that authors choose to share in the last section of this paper. Also, arising from several yet similar cultural influences, the purists voice accusation of dilution and warn that the traditional Cham dance may be slowly dying and morphing into tourist-friendly theatrics that is pleasing to the eye. In this paper, the authors attempt to elucidate its historical and contemporary role and place, to instigate an inquiry that hopefully provides a robust narrative, rich in value, and with a substantive interpretation from which lessons could be culled or harvested. Authors look at Vajranŕtyam in a generic wisdom-method space cutting across religious and social-cultural spaces. They also seek possible alignments and connect with science, essentially to study, explore, propagate core beneficiaries of the Dharma dance in terms of a sacred mindful and meditative art form.

Patients undergoing high-dose radioiodine ablation (RAI) therapy in Nuclear Medicine Department need to be isolated in a special designed ward for a few days. Large amount of clinical radioactive wastewater from patient body is produced during high-activity RAI therapy. The radioactive wastewater needs to store in a delay tank until the radioactivity decayed below acceptable limit before being discharged and indirectly limit the patient admission and treatment. This study is to propose an alternative antibacterial adsorbent for I-131 extraction from clinical radioactive wastewater at the nuclear medicine department using graphene oxide silver (GOAg) and bamboo activated carbon (BAC). The synthesised adsorbents and their sediments (filtered sample) were analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) for morphological analysis and analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XPS spectra for C 1s adsorbents show intensity peaks at 284.45 eV (C=C) and 285.3 eV (C–C) for GOAg and its sediments, and 284.35 eV (C–C), 287.00 eV (C=O), and 290.07 eV (π–π∗ transitions) for BAC and its sediments. FTIR spectra reveal various functional groups of adsorbents: C=C (1637.50772 cm⁻¹), C=O (1340.48041 cm⁻¹), and C–O–C (1031.88060 cm⁻¹) for GOAg and its sediments, and C=C (1635.57897 cm⁻¹), C–C (1257.54421 cm⁻¹), and C–O (1188.10925 cm⁻¹) for BAC and its sediments. XRD patterns exhibit peaks at 2θ = 27.82°, 29.39°, 32.24°, and 46.22°, which can be attributed to the (002) diffraction plane, (220) crystallographic plane, (111) plane of Ag₂O, and (200) crystallographic plane, respectively, for GOAg and its sediments. A study of electron regeneration efficiency in fluorophore

Archetypical excitonic solar cell consists of fluorophore (main light absorber), photoelectrode (electron transportation), and conducting polymer (electron regeneration). Fluorophore generates excited state electron upon absorption of light with sufficient energy. Electron in the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) would undergo an excitation to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) during the light absorption process. Therefore an electron vacancy in the HOMO of fluorophore is expected; need to be replenished for a continuous process of a photovoltaic mechanism. However the quantum of research on electron regeneration efficiency is still low due to limited computational facility. Two parameters are hypothesized to have significant impact on the electron regeneration process i.e., (i) conductivity ( σ ), and (ii) redox potential ( E o ) of the conducting polymer. This study aims to establish a correlation between the stated parameters with the photovoltaic conversion efficiency, η . Two conducting polymer were used in this work i.e., (i) alginate, and (ii) a mixture of 60 wt% of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 40 wt% of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The conductivity of the conducting polymer was calculated based on the measured bulk resistance using Electrical Impedance Spectrometer (EIS); showed that σ alginate > σ CMC/PVA . The redox potentials were calculated using quantum chemical calculations under the framework of density functional theory (DFT) at the level of b3lyp/lanl2dz. The lead sulphide thin film (fluorophore) was deposited using thermal evaporator on a pre-fabricated TiO 2 layer on indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) conducting glass. The CMC/PVA-based cell yielded the highest η of 0.0015% under one-sun condition; showed higher η than that of the alginate conducting polymer. Photoelectrode plays significant role in excitonic solar cells i.e., (i) as an acceptor and (ii) transport media of excited state electron from the fluorophore upon absorption of energy of photon; which prevents from electron-hole recombination in the fluorophore. The evolution of opto-electronic properties of the ZnO upon change of size, however, receives insufficient attention from researchers. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to establish few realistic clusters of (ZnO) n ( n  = 3, 6, 12, 13, and 21) to study their opto-electronic properties using quantum chemical calculations at the level of B3LYP functional and lanl2dz basis set. Geometry of the clusters were optimized to the lowest energy structures; evaluated as realistic using a combination of harmonic frequency calculations, and experimental works. A device structure of cadmium selenide-based solar cell was used in the study to analyze the energy level alignment, and compatibility of the ZnO realistic clusters.

Quantifying the amount of carbon stored in tropical forests is needed to inform climate mitigation mechanisms such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). Remote sensing is a cost-effective tool to accurately estimate aboveground forest carbon stocks. Studies that use data from multiple sensors for estimating aboveground forest carbon, however, remain limited despite their tremendous potential. We estimated aboveground forest carbon stocks using multiple linear regression modeling between forest inventory data and satellite data, specifically L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Landsat, in three study sites in the Philippines. Models built using data from individual sensors versus combined multi-sensor data were assessed to determine which produced more accurate estimates of aboveground forest carbon. Subsequently, the accuracy of a global model developed from forest plot data across sites, was compared against site-specific models. Across sites, results showed that models using combined multi-sensor data performed better than those using individual sensors, with higher accuracies obtained for larger plot size (R2=0.82-0.93;RMSE=27.20-42.92 Mg C ha-1). Textural attributes made up the majority of predictors in these combined sensor models and contributed to improved accuracies and reduced uncertainties in carbon estimates. The global model did not perform better than site-specific models, regardless of sensor data or plot size, which suggests that the predictive power of the global model may be influenced by inherent site-specific variabilities (e.g., forest characteristics and forest inventory methods). Combining multi-sensor satellite data offers an improved approach for estimating aboveground forest carbon, with larger forest plot sizes contributing to this improvement, thus leading to higher accuracies and lower uncertainties for spatially explicit carbon mapping in dense tropical forest regions. © ACRS *** right reserv

A quality real-time intuition guided by design thinking has always been the base of innovation resulting in a quality production. However, the major findings driven by interviews with a bunch of dignified technocrats and stakeholders of such product-based companies reflect that design and practical standpoint of Indian engineering colleges is quite weak. There are certain gaps within the structure of engineering in India. The paper brings out to the readers the core paradigms of such structure in India. The author is typically concerned with the basic factors which have a dominance over the system of real-time practice and design. Here the authors have discussed about the gaps and initiatives by considering the existing manpower, infrastructure, employment opportunity and societal need and have put forth few suggestions to build a healthy research and education eco-system in nanoscience and nanotechnology in India along with certain ways of bridging gaps and work out the major roadblocks which we come across in the field. Suggestive measures and innovative initiatives by government and stake holders have been proposed and discussed for quality of integrated engineering program for the various ambitious plans for making India superpower and a self-reliant smart nation.

Aims. The nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) is expected to be an aggregate signal of an ensemble of gravitational waves emitted predominantly by a large population of coalescing supermassive black hole binaries in the centres of merging galaxies. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), which are ensembles of extremely stable pulsars at approximately kiloparsec distances precisely monitored for decades, are the most precise experiments capable of detecting this background. However, the subtle imprints that the GWB induces on pulsar timing data are obscured by many sources of noise that occur on various timescales. These must be carefully modelled and mitigated to increase the sensitivity to the background ***. In this paper, we present a novel technique to estimate the optimal number of frequency coefficients for modelling achromatic and chromatic noise, while selecting the preferred set of noise models to use for each pulsar. We also incorporated a new model to fit for scattering variations in the Bayesian pulsar timing package temponest. These customised noise models enable a more robust characterisation of single-pulsar noise. We developed a software package based on tempo2 to create realistic simulations of European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) datasets that allowed us to test the efficacy of our noise modelling ***. Using these techniques, we present an in-depth analysis of the noise properties of 25 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) that form the second data release (DR2) of the EPTA and investigate the effect of incorporating low-frequency data from the Indian Pulsar Timing Array collaboration for a common sample of ten MSPs. We used two packages, enterprise and temponest, to estimate our noise models and compare them with those reported using EPTA DR1. We find that, while in some pulsars we can successfully disentangle chromatic from achromatic noise owing to the wider frequency coverage in DR2, in others the noise models evolve in a much mo

The profound impact of Darwin's theory of evolution on biology has led to the acceptance of the theory in many complex systems that lie well beyond its original domain. Culture is one example that also exhibits key Darwinian evolutionary properties: Differential adoption of cultural variants (variation and selection), new entities imitating older ones (inheritance), and convergence toward the most suitable state (adaptation). In this work we present a framework for capturing the details of the evolutionary dynamics in cultural systems on the "meme"|the cultural analog of the biological gene|level, and analyze large-scale, comprehensive movie-meme association data to construct a timeline of the history of cinema via the evolution of genres and the rise and fall of prominent sub- genres. We also identify the impactful movies that were harbingers to popular memes that we may say correspond to the proverbial "Eve" of the human race, shining light on the process by which certain genres form and grow. A pulsar's pulse profile gets broadened at low frequencies due to dispersion along the line of sight or due to multi-path propagation. The dynamic nature of the interstellar medium makes both of these effects time-dependent and introduces slowly varying time delays in the measured times-of-arrival similar to those introduced by passing gravitational waves. In this article, we present an improved method to correct for such delays by obtaining unbiased dispersion measure (DM) measurements by using low-frequency estimates of the scattering parameters. We evaluate this method by comparing the obtained DM estimates with those, where scatter-broadening is ignored using simulated data. A bias is seen in the estimated DMs for simulated data with pulse-broadening with a larger variability for a data set with a variable frequency scaling index, α, as compared to that assuming a Kolmogorov turbulence. Application of the proposed method removes this bias robustly for data with band averaged signal-to-noise ratio larger than 100. We report the measurements of the scatter-broadening time and α from analysis of PSR J1643−1224, observed with upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array experiment. These scattering parameters were found to vary with epoch and α was different from that expected for Kolmogorov turbulence. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of combining cemiplimab, an anti–programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibody, with isatuximab, an anti-CD38 antibody, in relapsed or refractory extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (R/R ENKTL). The hypothesis was that CD38 blockade could enhance the antitumor activity of PD-1 inhibitors. Eligible patients received cemiplimab (250 mg on days 1 and 15) and isatuximab (10 mg/kg on days 2 and 16) IV every 4 weeks for 6 cycles. Responders then received cemiplimab (350 mg) and isatuximab (10 mg/kg) every 3 weeks for up to 24 months. The primary end point was the complete response (CR) rate based on the best response. Of 37 patients enrolled, the CR rate was 51% (19/37), exceeding the primary end point of 40%, and the objective response rate was 65% (24/37). After a median follow-up of 30.2 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 25.6-34.8 months), the median progression-free survival was 9.5 months (95% CI, 1.4-17.6 months), whereas the median overall survival had not yet been reached. Patients achieving CR received a median of 28 cycles (range, 4-33 cycles), and the median duration of response for responders (n = 24) was 29.4 months (95% CI, 15.4-43.4 months). Structural variations disrupting the 3’-untranslated region of PD-L1 and high programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression were observed in responders. Most adverse events were mild (grade 1-2), with grade ≥3 events (32%) and no treatment-related deaths. The combination of isatuximab and cemiplimab demonstrated sustained antitumor activity and a manageable safety profile in R/R ENKTL.
