We study three-flavor QCD in a uniform magnetic field using chiral perturbation theory (χPT). We construct the vacuum free energy density, quark condensate shifts induced by the magnetic field and the renormalized magnetization to O(p6) in the chiral expansion. We find that the calculation of the free energy is greatly simplified by cancellations among two-loop diagrams involving charged mesons. In comparing our results with recent 2 + 1-flavor lattice QCD data, we find that the light quark condensate shift at O(p6) is in better agreement than the shift at O(p4). We also find that the renormalized magnetization, due to its smallness, possesses large uncertainties at O(p6) due to the uncertainties in the low-energy constants. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Matrix decompositions are ubiquitous in machine learning, including applications in dimensionality reduction, data compression and deep learning algorithms. Typical solutions for matrix decompositions have polynomial complexity which significantly increases their computational cost and time. In this work, we leverage efficient processing operations that can be run in parallel on modern Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), predominant computing architecture used e.g. in deep learning, to reduce the computational burden of computing matrix decompositions. More specifically, we reformulate the randomized decomposition problem to incorporate fast matrix multiplication operations (BLAS-3) as building blocks. We show that this formulation, combined with fast random number generators, allows to fully exploit the potential of parallel processing implemented in GPUs. Our extensive evaluation confirms the superiority of this approach over the competing methods and we release the results of this research as a part of the official CUDA implementation1 © 2021, CC BY.

A Parameterized Generative Adversarial Network Using Cyclic Projection for Explainable Medical Image Classification

Although current data augmentation methods are successful to alleviate the data insufficiency, conventional augmentation are primarily intra-domain while advanced generative adversarial networks (GANs) generate images remaining uncertain, particularly in small-scale datasets. In this paper, we propose a parameterized GAN (ParaGAN) that effectively controls the changes of synthetic samples among domains and highlights the attention regions for downstream classification. Specifically, ParaGAN incorporates projection distance parameters in cyclic projection and projects the source images to the decision boundary to obtain the class-difference maps. Our experiments show that ParaGAN can consistently outperform the existing augmentation methods with explainable classification on two small-scale medical datasets. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Optimization of escape kinetics by reflecting and resetting

Stochastic restarting is a strategy of starting anew. Incorporation of the resetting to the random walks can result in the decrease of the mean first passage time, due to the ability to limit unfavorably meandering, sub-optimal trajectories. In the following manuscript, we examine how stochastic resetting influences escape dynamics from the (−∞, 1) interval in the presence of the single-well power-law |x|κ potentials with κ > 0. Examination of the mean first passage time is complemented by the analysis of the coefficient of variation, which provides a robust and reliable indicator assessing efficiency of stochastic resetting. The restrictive nature of resetting is compared to placing a reflective boundary in the system at hand. In particular, for each potential, the position of the reflecting barrier giving the same mean first passage time as the optimal resetting rate is determined. Finally, in addition to reflecting, we compare effectiveness of other resetting strategies with respect to optimization of the mean first passage time. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. A combination of electrochemical and spectroscopic studies allows for understanding and describing the processes that occur on a nano-modified commercial pure Ti by Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) in the presence and absence of tryptophan (Trp). The electrochemical results confirmed that the deposition of a thin CuNPs layer on the Ti substrate improves the corrosion resistance of the substrate under simulated physiological conditions. The addition of Trp to the corrosive environment accelerated the degradation of the CuNPs coating likely via the formation of a Cu-Trp complex. The degradation of the coating led to the formation of nano-galvanic sites at the substrate/ CuNPs coating interface, which in turn had a detrimental effect on the substrate and further increased the degradation of the coating. The conformational changes of Trp on the corroded CuNPs-Ti surface have been investigated by surface-enhanced vibrational techniques. Trp was adsorbed on the corroded CuNPs-Ti surface through the indole ring, which adopts a more/less horizontal orientation, and the protonated amine group in the presence of chloride and phosphate ions on the metallic surface. The application of a combination of nanoinfrared spectroscopy with atomic force microscopy (AFM-IR) proved that Trp covered the bimetal surface and caused the significant degradation of the surface. © 2022, The Authors. This study presents a 2-D analytical model for the double gate tunnel FET (DG-TFET). The model considers the gate-on-source overlap that may occur intentionally or unintentionally due to fabrication tolerances. The 2-D Poisson's equation is solved in the main four regions of the structure, namely, the source, channel, drain, and the overlapped region inside the source. The mobile charge inside the channel is taken into consideration. In addition, the source and the drain depletion region lengths are precisely calculated by an iterative technique. Such crucial assumptions and calculations result in accurate expectations of the electrostatic potential. The energy band diagram could be extracted according to the obtained electrostatic potential, and, subsequently, the minimum tunneling width is computed. The impact of channel length and the overlap distance is thoroughly investigated. The results of the proposed model and Silvaco TCAD simulations are compared. The comparison satisfies a good agreement that verifies the validity of the presented model. © 2021 IEEE.

Virtual reality (VR) simulations have shown promise in helping students learn abstract concepts and visualize 3D objects at scale. While VR is useful for teaching subjects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics, early research has focused more on efficacy than instructional design. Understanding the factors that contribute to VR educational outcomes is increasingly important, particularly how to integrate instructional design into creating custom implementations. This paper presents the design and development of a VR application for teaching crystalline structures in undergraduate physics courses. Utilizing the SAMR model of technology integration, this study explores how collaboration with instructors can integrate VR into various class components, each requiring different VR features. Key features include visualizing, constructing, and manipulating crystal structures for instruction, assignments, and assessment. The application includes tools for generating atoms, creating lattice frames, and building composite structures to enhance comprehension of geometric arrangements and theoretical rules. Applying instruction design theories to VR in STEM education has implications for future applications, as successful VR educational tools depend on practical considerations, instructor goals, and implementation factors.

Ensuring dependable quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for computation-intensive and delay-sensitive applications in vehicles can be a challenging task that impacts performance. While multi-access edge computing (MEC) based vehicular edge computing network (VECN) and vehicular cloudlets (VC) enable task offloading, but their prompt and optimal accessibility is another challenge. The conventional wireless technologies may not suffice to meet the stringent ultra-low latency and cost constraints of such applications. Nonetheless, the combination of different wireless technologies can enhance network performance and satisfy these requirements. Focusing on the computational efficacy of VECN, this paper proposes a mobility, contact, and computational load-aware (MCLA) task offloading scheme for heterogeneous VECN. The MCLA scheme dynamically considers the mobility, contact, and computational load of vehicles for making task offloading decisions. To optimize the performance, the MCLA scheme integrates the Mode-1 and Mode-2 of the 5G-NR-V2X standard, along with mmWave communications. The MCLA scheme provides an opportunistic switching mechanism between these modes and heterogeneous radio access technologies (RATs) to reduce communication delays and costs. Moreover, the MCLA scheme leverages public vehicles (i.e., public buses), in proximity by using their computational power to manage computational latency and cost. Furthermore, it also considers the shareable computations from passengers’ mobile equipment within the public vehicle to improve the computation capacity of the public vehicles. Extensive evaluations and numerical results show that the proposed MCLA scheme significantly improves the task turnover ratio by 4%–15% with 4.7%–29.8% lower transmission and computation costs. © 2023, CC BY.

AI-supported algorithms, particularly generative models, have been successfully used in a variety of different contexts. This work employs a generative modeling approach to unfold detector effects specifically tailored for exclusive reactions that involve multiparticle final states. Our study demonstrates the preservation of correlations between kinematic variables in a multidimensional phase space. We perform a full closure test on two-pion photoproduction pseudodata generated with a realistic model in the kinematics of the Jefferson Lab CLAS g11 experiment. The overlap of different reaction mechanisms leading to the same final state associated with the CLAS detector’s nontrivial effects represents an ideal test case for AI-supported analysis. Uncertainty quantification performed via bootstrap provides an estimate of the systematic uncertainty associated with the procedure. The test demonstrates that GANs can reproduce highly correlated multidifferential cross sections even in the presence of detector-induced distortions in the training datasets, and provides a solid basis for applying the framework to real experimental data.
