Experiments in affective computing are based on stimulus datasets that, in the process of standardization, receive metadata describing which emotions each stimulus evokes. In this paper, we explore an approach to creating stimulus datasets for affective computing using generative adversarial networks (GANs). Traditional dataset preparation methods are costly and time consuming, prompting our investigation of alternatives. We conducted experiments with various GAN architectures, including Deep Convolutional GAN, Conditional GAN, Auxiliary Classifier GAN, Progressive Augmentation GAN, and Wasserstein GAN, alongside data augmentation and transfer learning techniques. Our findings highlight promising advances in the generation of emotionally evocative synthetic images, suggesting significant potential for future research and improvements in this domain. © 2024, CC BY.

Biofilm-related biomaterial infections are notoriously challenging to treat and can lead to chronic infection and persisting *** date,a large body of research can be reviewed for coatings which potentially prevent bacterial infection while promoting implant *** only a very small number has been translated from bench to *** study provides an in-depth analysis of the stability,antibacterial mechanism,and biocompatibility of medical grade polycaprolactone(mPCL),coated with human serum albumin(HSA),the most abundant protein in blood plasma,and tannic acid(TA),a natural polyphenol with antibacterial *** docking studies demonstrated that HSA and TA interact mainly through hydrogen-bonding,ionic and hydrophobic interactions,leading to smooth and regular *** vitro bacteria adhesion testing showed that coated scaffolds maintained their antimicrobial properties over 3 days by significantly reducing *** colonization and biofilm ***,amplitude modulation-frequency modulation(AMFM)based viscoelasticity mapping and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)data suggested that HSA/TA-coatings cause morphological and mechanical changes on the outer cell membrane of *** leading to membrane disruption and cell death while proving non-toxic to human primary *** results support this antibiotic-free approach as an effective and biocompatible strategy to prevent biofilm-related biomaterial infections.

Capacitance-to-voltage conversion is essential for capacitive sensors in various industries, including touch interfaces, medical devices, and moisture measurement. However, circuit design faces challenges like non-linearity, noise, and small capacitance variations affecting voltage signals. This article proposes a phase-locked loop in free-running oscillator mode with a frequency-to-voltage converter to enhance accuracy and stability. Test results show a 97.9% measurement accuracy, demonstrating reduced noise and improved stability. The proposed circuit is ideal for high-precision applications in diverse environments, overcoming limitations of traditional methods. © 2025 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the process by which human-designed systems analyse available data and make judgements based on predetermined criteria in order to accomplish particular objectives. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked a deep ethical conversation among key players, including tech companies, businesses, educational institutions, and legislators. AI's ethical problems have prompted the creation of ethical frameworks that aim to control its application for the good of society, the defence of human rights, and the maintenance of individual autonomy and privacy. This paper provides a critical evaluation and summary of the fundamental concepts behind the use of artificial intelligence, with a focus on the GDPR's (General Data Protection Regulation) approach. The rights of data subjects, data protection legislation, and data subjects' permission are crucial considerations in the context of 'privacy by design.' © 2024 IEEE.

This study aims to identify photo-/electrocatalysts that can enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which are of utmost importance in electro-/photochemical energy systems, such as solar energy, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, or metal-air batteries. Our study focused on investigating the 2D Ge₂Se₂P₄ monolayer and found that it exhibits a bifunctional photocatalyst with a very high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. The two-dimensional (2D) Ge₂Se₂P₄ monolayer has superior HER activity compared to that of most 2D materials, and it also outperforms the reference catalysts IrO₂(110) and Pt(111) in terms of low overpotential values for ORR and OER mechanisms. Such superior catalytic performance in the 2D Ge₂Se₂P₄ monolayer can be attributed to its electron states, charge transfer process, and suitable band alignments referring to normal hydrogen electrodes. Overall, the study suggests that the Ge₂Se₂P₄ monolayer could be an excellent bifunctional catalyst for advancing photo-/electrochemical energy systems. © 2024 American Chemical Society.

Comparing the Evolution of Precipitates in Inconel 625 Superalloy Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Subjected to High Temperature Creep and Annealing

In this study, the evolution of precipitates during high-temperature creep and annealing of Inconel 625 superalloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion is compared. Creep tests were performed under a constant stress of 100 MPa at temperatures of 600, 700, and 800 °C. Samples creep tested at 600 and 700 °C were terminated after 2000 hours, while at 800 °C the creep test was carried out until rupture. Isothermal annealing was carried out at temperatures of 700 and 800 °C for the same duration as creep tests. Microstructural analysis of creep deformed and annealed samples was performed with the use of light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The qualitative and quantitative analysis allowed to demonstrate how prolonged exposure to high temperature and stress affects the morphology, size and distribution of secondary phase precipitates in Inconel 625 manufactured by laser powder bed fusion. Precipitates of the δ phase exhibited a uniform distribution throughout the volume of the annealed and crept samples. It was shown that after creep testing the δ phase plate-like precipitates were smaller and thinner than in the annealed conditions. It was also determined that the stress induces an increase in the volume fraction of the δ phase, as well as the growth and coalescence of the carbides and Laves phase precipitates. The results reported here confirm that the size and volume fraction of carbides and Laves phase precipitates distributed along grain boundaries are the most important parameters of the microstructure affecting the creep behavior, due to their role in microcracks formation and its coalescence. © 2023, The Authors. Recently, Worobey et al.(2022) published a report entitled ‘The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan was the early epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic' that succinctly summarizes their study [1]. A pre-print version of this study had earlier elicited a series of highprofile media coverages [2,3]. All these reports deliver a social-political message that the Huanan market is the epicenter of COVID-19.

This work presents a numerical investigation of acoustic cavitation in Newtonian fluid based on frequency ultrasound. The model of ultrasonic cavitation dynamics is formulated by a modified Rayleigh-Plesset equation and an acoustic pressure equation. The exponential B-Spline collection method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions of the given cavitation bubble model, considering the effect of acoustic pressure. The behaviour of the cavitation microbubbles' radius and the internal pressure of acoustic cavitation were examined at different values of frequencies. The obtained results reveal the importance of frequencies in ultrasound, which play a vital role in changing the behaviour of cavitation bubbles.

Three liquid crystalline equimolar mixtures are formulated, each containing the MHPOBC compound and the homolog from the 3FmHPhF6 series with m = 4, 5, and 6. The properties of the mixtures are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electro-optic measurements, and UV-Vis-NIR and dielectric spectroscopies. In all mixtures, the smectic A*, smectic C*, and smectic CA* phases are observed. Each mixture can be supercooled and forms the glass of smectic CA* at 225-238 K. The glass transition temperature decreases with the increasing CmH2m chain length in the 3FmHPhF6 molecule. The tilt angle in the smectic CA* phase reaches 36.5-37.5°. The selective reflection of light in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges is observed, with a strong dependence of the reflected light’s wavenumber on temperature. © 2025, CC BY.

Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) provides an ideal basis for gate-controlled, and free of etching, electronic devices. Theoretical modeling of realistic devices is an essential part of research, however, simulations of large-scale BLG devices continue to be extremely challenging. Micrometer-sized systems are predominantly beyond the reach of the commonly used atomistic tight-binding method, while other numerical approaches based on the two dimensional Dirac equation are not straightforward to conduct due to the fermion doubling problem. Here we present an approach based on the continuum model, unharmed by the fermion doubling. The discretization of the BLG continuum Hamiltonian leads to an effective four-band model, with both valleys built-in. We demonstrate its performance with realistic, large-scale systems, and obtain results consistent with experiments and with the tight-binding model, over a broad range of magnetic field.
