We address the problem of exact and approximate transformation of quantum dichotomies in the asymptotic regime, i.e., the existence of a quantum channel E mapping ρ1⊗n into ρ2⊗Rnn with an error ϵn (measured by trace distance) and σ1⊗n into σ2⊗Rnn exactly, for a large number n. We derive second-order asymptotic expressions for the optimal transformation rate Rn in the small-, moderate-, and large-deviation error regimes, as well as the zero-error regime, for an arbitrary pair (ρ1,σ1) of initial states and a commuting pair (ρ2,σ2) of final states. We also prove that for σ1 and σ2 given by thermal Gibbs states, the derived optimal transformation rates in the first three regimes can be attained by thermal operations. This allows us, for the first time, to study the second-order asymptotics of thermodynamic state interconversion with fully general initial states that may have coherence between different energy eigenspaces. Thus, we discuss the optimal performance of thermodynamic protocols with coherent inputs and describe three novel resonance phenomena allowing one to significantly reduce transformation errors induced by finite-size effects. What is more, our result on quantum dichotomies can also be used to obtain, up to second-order asymptotic terms, optimal conversion rates between pure bipartite entangled states under local operations and classical communication.

Graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures take advantage of tailoring spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the graphene layer by the proximity effect. At long wavelength—saddled by the electronic states near the Dirac points—the proximitized features can be effectively modeled by the Hamiltonian involving novel SOC terms and allow for an admixture of the tangential and radial spin-textures—by the so-called Rashba angle θR. Taking such effective models we perform realistic large-scale magnetotransport calculations—transverse magnetic focusing and Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation—and show that there are unique qualitative and quantitative features allowing for an unbiased experimental disentanglement of the conventional Rashba SOC from its novel radial counterpart, called here the radial Rashba SOC. Along with that, we propose a scheme for a direct estimation of the Rashba angle by exploring the magneto response symmetries when swapping an in-plane magnetic field. To complete the story, we analyze the magnetotransport and spin-relaxation signatures in the presence of an emergent Dresselhaus SOC and also provide some generic ramifications about possible scenarios of the radial superconducting diode effect.

The two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) exhibits gate-tunable superconductivity with a characteristic domelike shape of the critical temperature (Tc) in the phase diagram. As shown recently [Phys. Rev. B 102, 085420 (2020)], such an effect can be explained as a consequence of the extended s−wave symmetry of the gap within an intersite real space pairing scenario, leading to a good agreement between the experiment and theory. In this work, we turn to a detailed analysis of the influence of spin-orbit coupling on the LAO/STO phase diagram by considering separately the atomic component as well as the interorbital hopping induced by the broken inversion symmetry at the interface. In particular, we analyze the optimal carrier concentration for which the maximal Tc is reached relative to the Lifshitz transition point. We find that the misalignment between the two can be significantly enhanced by the spin-orbit splitting of the bands, combined with the fact that superconductivity sets in when the Fermi level passes the anticrossing induced by the spin-orbital hybridization. In the presence of the external in-plane magnetic field, our calculations show fourfold anisotropy with the paramagnetic limit largely exceeded for B|| directed along the high symmetry points [01] and [01]. The obtained electron concentration dependence of Bc|| reproduces the characteristic domelike shape reported in experiments and the estimated value of Bc|| corresponds to that measured experimentally.
