The positronium, a bound state of electron and positron, is a unique system to perform highly precise tests, due to no hadronic background and precise Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) predictions. Being a system of lepton and antilepton, its properties are precisely described by QED in the Standard Model (SM). The final events topology can be simulated using Monte Carlo techniques. The J-PET detector is a multi-purpose, large acceptance system that is very well-suitable to the studies of positronium decay due to its excellent angular (1◦) and timing resolutions. We present preliminary results on the feasibility of searching for Dark Matter (DM) candidates in the decay o-Ps → invisible with the J-PET, which is well-suited for the detection of positronium-decay products. Toy Monte Carlo simulations have been prepared to incorporate DM decay models to the oPs decay expectations in order to assess the detector capabilities to search for such an elusive component of our Universe. © 2024 Jagiellonian university. Spatial distributions of wisents (European bison) Bison bonasus (Linnaeus 1758), were studied in the Bieszczady Mountains (south-eastern Poland) on the basis of telemetric data obtained from two subpopulations: the western – inhabiting the forest districts of Baligród, Komańcza, Cisna and Lesko, and the eastern – dwelling within the districts of Lutowiska, Stuposiany, and in Bieszczadzki National park. Data was collected between 2002-2021. In our study, we propose a novel approach for classifying wisent subpopulations that utilizes machine learning methods and CLC data. For this purpose, the performances of eight algorithms: Naive Bayes, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, k-Nearest Neighbors and Decision Tree were investigated. The algorithms were compared according to the following indicators: accuracy, Cohen’s-Kappa, precision, recall and F1 score. Their assessment was enhanced through the application of statistical inference (the Friedman test with post-hoc analysis) and SHAP values. The lowest results were achieved by Naive Bayes and Logistic Regression methods (accuracy of 73.69% and 74.43%, respectively), whilst significantly higher results were achieved by eXtreme Gradient Boosting, k-Nearest Neighbors and Decision Tree classifiers, with the classification accuracy exceeding 90% (91.81%, 92.8%, 93.47%, respectively). Based on the results, we conclude that CLC data represents a valuable source of information regarding the affinity of wisents towards different habitat conditions.

Dynamics characterization of the glass formation of twist-bend liquid crystal dimers through dielectric studies

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy in a frequency range of 10 to 2× 109Hz were used to study the molecular orientational dynamics of the glass-forming, thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal dimers CBS7SCB and CBS7OCB. As was expected theoretically, two different relaxation processes that contributed to the dielectric permittivity of dimers were observed. The low-frequency relaxation mode, m1, was attributed to an "end-over-end rotation" of the dipolar groups parallel to the director. The high-frequency relaxation mode, m2, was associated with the precessional motions of the dipolar groups around the director. The relaxation times for both modes were analyzed over a wide temperature range down to near the glass transition temperature. The different analytic functions that were used to characterize the temperature dependence of the relaxation times of the two modes are discussed. Particularly, the critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model seemed to give not only quite good numerical fittings, but also provided a consistent physical picture of the orientational dynamics on approaching the glass transition. When compared to the IR spectroscopy finding, in the higher temperature region of NTBphase, where the longitudinal correlations of dipoles grew, the m1 mode experienced a sudden increase of enthalpy while m2 changed continuously, which is described by the critical mode coupling behavior. Both types of molecular motion appear to strongly cooperate at a low temperature range of the NTBphase, but changed in a coordinated manner as the temperature of the material approached the glass transition point. Experimental and computational methods are employed in this study to examine how varying heat treatment temperatures and composition of Moo3nanoparticles, a transition metal oxide (TMO) impact the mechanical properties of PEDOT:PSS/MoO3 thin film blends for organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) applications. The study primarily investigates the mechanical properties (hardness and Young's modulus), microstructure and surface morphology of solution-processed PEDOT:PSS/MoO3 ink blends of different compositions prepared at temperature regimes between 60 to 120 °C. Nanoindentation is used to investigate mechanical properties and Scanning Probe Microscopy to examine the surface morphological and microstructural changes. Mechanical maps and statistical deconvolutions are used to show the distribution of mechanical properties and phases respectively in the PEDOT:PSS/Mo03 thin film blends at the different annealing temperatures (60 - 120 °C). The experimental and computational results lead to the conclusion that incorporating different percentages of Moo3into PEDOT:PSS can, depending on the blended ratio improve the microstructure, mechanical properties and surface morphology of the PEDOT:PSS/MoO3 blends. Lightly doped PEDOT:PSS/MoO3 blends (1:0.1, 1:0.3), generally exhibit improved surface morphologies, enhanced elastic modulus and hardness, suitable for applications in efficient and mechanically durable electronic devices.

The theoretical model developed for electromagnetic wave propagation at uniform plasma-lithium fluoride-uniform plasma waveguide structure has yielded insightful results, demonstrating the significant influence of collision frequency, plasma frequency, and waveguide thickness on the propagation characteristics. The normalized phase constant, attenuation, propagation length, and penetration depth exhibit clear dependencies on these parameters, which are crucial for optimizing waveguide design. These results offer promising applications in sensing systems, integrated circuits, and subwavelength optics in THz frequency regimes. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Enhancing heat transfer in X-ray tube by van der heterostructures-based thermionic emission

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have attracted much attention due to their distinctive optical, electrical, and thermal properties, demonstrating promising potential in areas such as photocatalysis, ultrafast photonics, and free electron radiation devices. Particularly, they are promising platforms for studying thermionic emission. Here, we illustrate that using vdW heterostructure-based thermionic emission can enhance heat transfer in vacuum devices. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that this approach offers a promising solution to the long-standing overheating issue in X-ray tubes. Specifically, we show that the saturated target temperature of a 2000 W X-ray tube can be reduced from around 1200℃ to 490℃. Additionally, our study demonstrates that by reducing the height of the Schottky barrier formed in the vdW heterostructures, the thermionic cooling performance can be enhanced. Our findings pave the way for the development of high-power X-ray tubes. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Which nonlocal correlations can be obtained, when a party has access to more than one subsystem? While traditionally nonlocality deals with spacelike separated parties, this question becomes important with quantum technologies that connect devices by means of small shared systems. Here, we study Bell inequalities where measurements of different parties can have overlap. This allows us to accommodate problems in quantum information such as the existence of quantum error correction codes in the framework of nonlocality. The scenarios considered show an interesting behavior with respect to Hilbert space dimension, overlap, and symmetry.

The paper presents research on Ag+ ions implanted TiO2 thin layers with Raman spectroscopy imaging. The oxide layers were formed on Ti–6Al–4V ELI titanium alloy substrates by multistage hybrid oxidation, which combines fluidized bed (FB) diffusive treatment at 640°C for 8 hours and physical vapor deposition (PVD) pulse magnetron sputtering. Silver ions were implanted after the fluidized bed process into the TiO2 layer using a Metal Vapour Vacuum Arc implanter to form the interface for further PVD oxidation and generate the antibacterial interface to prevent inflammation during top layer spallation and cracking in working conditions. The ion implantation process was preceded by Monte Carlo simulations modelling of the depth profiles using SRIM-2013.00 software. The fluence of implanted ions was 1×1017 cm-2, and the acceleration voltage was 60 kV. The modelled range at peak damage of the real Ag+ + Ag2+ + Ag3+ + Ag4+ profile was about 40 nm. Raman spectroscopy imaging, SEM and TEM observations were carried out to evaluate the effects of ion implantation and determine the mechanism of TiO2 layer formation during combined oxidation. The layers had an amourphous and crystalline character, and the top surface area was composed of TiO2 rutile and anatase, oxygen vacancies (750 cm-1), and crystalline TiO2 (310 cm-1). Amorphpus TiO2 dominates in the middle and near substrate layer. The layer before the substrate is built of Ag+ ions area (100 nm) and dense TiO2 mixture of rutile (236 cm-1) and partially anatase (141 cm-1). It has been found that the functionalization of oxide layers using a multistage hybrid oxidation and ion implantation leads to a change in oxygen concentration in the various TiO2 layers and forms a highly defected and active top surface layer. Electrical spin manipulation in double SrTiO3/LaAlO3 quantum dots

The spin dynamics in two electron double quantum dots embedded in two dimensional electron gas at the interface between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 is studied by an exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in the context of the electric dipole spin resonance experiment. Based on the three band model of 3d-electrons localized at Ti ions on the square lattice we analyze in details the singlet-triplet transition induced by the AC electric field, in the magnetic field range close to the avoided crossing which appears as a result of the spin-orbit coupling. For symmetric double quantum dots the single photon spin-flip transition is prohibited due to the parity symmetry and the transition can occur only by the higher order two-photon processes. For a weakly asymmetric system, when the first order singlet-triplet transitions are released due to the parity symmetry breaking, the spin-flip transition has a character of the Rabi oscillations for a low electric field amplitude. As the amplitude is increased the frequency of the transition is blueshifted (redshifted) for the magnetic field below (above) the single-triplet avoided crossing. For a sufficiently high magnetic field and high AC field amplitude the electric field drives the system across the avoided crossing inducing the spin-flip by the Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg-Majorana effect. Finally, the optimization of the geometrical parameters of the system with respect to the time of spin-flip of its fidelity is also presented. © 2024, CC BY.
