Improved power control methods of transport format combination indicator (TFCI) field in hard split mode, where the TFCI power is flexibly adjusted to guarantee the reliability of TFCI transmission and the efficiency of its power usage are presented. Simulation results show that in the hard split mode the proposed methods provide a flexible TFCI power allocation.

In this paper, we first analyze the performance loss due to the waveform shaping filter specified by the 3GPP2. Analysis and simulation results show that there Is significant SNR penalty which was not usually considered In the previous system. Then we propose the MMSE receiver filter which is designed to eliminate remaining interference and satisfy the FCC mask rule at the same time. Both the analysis and simulation results show that most of the SNR penalty can be eliminated.

The DNA of a cell is an object which admits a simple mathematical description and a convenient representation in a computer (it is given by an easily manipulatable list, a finite sequence in four letters typically of length between one million and 10 billions). In contrast to this, there is no simple way of describing the cell neither statically and even less temporally (dynamically). We shall indicate here a possible formalism of combinatorial and numerical (entropic) structures on spaces of sequences which reflect, up to some degree, the organization and functions of DNA and proteins. The architecture of a product is determined by both the elements that compose the product and the way in which they interact with each other. In this paper, we use the design structure matrix (DSM) as a tool to capture this architecture. Designing modular products can result in many benefits to both consumers and manufacturers. The development of modular products requires the identification of highly interactive groups of elements and arranging (i.e. clustering) them into modules. However, no rigorous DSM clustering technique can be found in product development literature. This paper presets a review of the basic DSM building blocks used in the identification of product modules. The DSM representation and building blocks are used to develop a new DSM clustering tool based on a genetic algorithm (GA) and the minimum description length (MDL) principle. The new tool is capable of partitioning the product architecture into an "optimal" set of modules or sub-systems. We demonstrate this new clustering method using an example of a complex product architecture for an industrial gas turbine.

To each number beta > I correspond abelian groups in R-d, of the form Lambda(beta) = Sigma(i=1)(d) Z(beta)e(i), which obey betaLambda(beta) subset of Lambda(beta). The set Z(beta) of beta-integers is a countable set of numbers: it is precisely the set of real numbers which are polynomial in beta when they are written in "basis beta", and Z(beta) = Z when beta is an element of N. We prove here a list of arithmetic properties of Z(beta) : addition, multiplication, relation with integers, when beta is a quadratic Pisot-Vijayaraghavan unit (quasicrystallographic inflation factors are particular examples). We also consider the case of a cubic Pisot-Vijayaraghavan unit associated with the seven-fold cyclotomic ring. At the end, we show how the point sets Lambda(beta) are vertices of d-dimensional tilings.

This paper proposes a new data-driven segmentation technique of 3D T1-weighted magnetic resonance scans of human head. This technique serves to the construction of individual head models. Several structures of the head are extracted. The morphology-oriented approach combined with an extensive use of topological constraints provides a robust and automatic method requiring minimum user intervention. This new approach is suitable to applications where the topology is one of the main constraints. The originality of the approach lies in the satisfaction of such constraints and in an effort towards robustness. (C) 2003 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
