We have designed a functional data-parallel language called BSML for programming bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) algorithms. Deadlocks and indeterminism are avoided and the execution time can be then estimated. For very large scale applications more than one parallel machine could be needed. One speaks about metacomputing. A major problem in programming application for such architectures is their hierarchical network structures: latency and bandwidth of the network between parallel nodes could be orders of magnitude worse than those inside a parallel node. Here we consider how to extend both the BSP model and BSML, well-suited for parallel computing, in order to obtain a model and a functional language suitable for metacomputing. ©World Scientific Publishing Company.

BSML is a high-level language for programming parallel algorithms. Built upon the OCaml language, it provides a safe setting for the implementation of BSP algorithms and for avoiding concurrency related problems (deadlocks, indeterminism, etc.). Dense matrices appear in many scientific computations but many libraries are limited to matrices of numeric elements. This paper is our first experiment to design a generic library of BSP implementation in ML of dense matrix operations for scientific computation. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a multiyear analysis of the North Luzon Expressway Balintawak-NorthBound (NLEX BLKNB) Datasets of 2006 to 2009 using the 6-minute Interval traffic volume obtained from the National Center of Transportation Studies (NCTS). Previous works have only explored the behavior and characteristics of hourly interval datasets where in, however descriptive, we think is still limited. The analysis includes extracting valuable information like common problems faced by motorist and traffic enforcers based from the trends and behaviors of the traffic flow given the traffic volume of the Balintawak corridor in NLEX for each 6-minute interval in every week of the years 2006 to 2009. By getting the data signature and applying X-Means clustering algorithm, Vector Fusion and nMDS algorithms to obtain visualizations needed for analysis, we are able to detect 12 outliers, some of which are previously known and unknown. We are also able to extract 90 different types of potential outliers from the datasets and analyze their behavior and commonality. Moreover, we are able to realize recurring patterns and relate gathered results to different factors such as holidays and weather disturbances. In addition, we are able to gather data about what may be the role of the SBPy component in characterizing the dataset. Finally, we conclude that the 6-minute Interval dataset has provided us with an effective visualization model used for traffic data analysis and a more in-depth level of characterization of the traffic behavior in NLEX, BLK-NB. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we used X-Means clustering algorithm, incorporated data images from a so-called Iterative Data Image Rotated Bar Graph (iDIRBrG) method (formerly referred as BC method) and used Vector Fusion Visualization to achieve better traffic data analysis results compared to our previous work by improving how data signatures are constructed from the raw data set. By doing so, we effectively identify more patterns, extracted known as well as unexpected outliers, and novel information from the data set. These results were validated by experts from the NCTS. Furthermore, we also show more simplistic frequency-domain 2D visualizations of the entire data set. These successfully expose the internal structure and relationship of each individual point as well as the clusters obtained from it. Hence, using the methods above, we provide an effective and efficient time series traffic analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

In this note, we present universality results obtained when we incorporate antiport rules in Evolution- Communication (EC) P Systems with Energy. In the mode where no priority is imposed over communication and evolution rules (CEM), the proof requires four membranes and a minimal quanta of energy both for symport and antiport. On the other hand, while we have not improved the results of previous literature with regards to the amount of energy consumed when evolution is prioritized (EPC), we are able to minimize the count of membranes *** have reduced seven to only four membranes in exchange for the utilization of three quanta of energy for symport and four for antiport. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, a new set of data signatures is derived to obtain better Vector Fusion 2D visualizations of a time series and periodic nD traffic data set as compared with previous work. The latter had used the entire Power Spectrum components for visualization purposes to produce 2D representations of each subset of the data. With the feasibility of obtaining a smaller representation of the data set in obtaining better cluster models compared to using the original n-dimensions, we now explore this feasibility for visualization purposes. We propose an algorithm that determines, in quantitative terms, how good the selected set of signatures represents the nD data set in 2 dimensions. We use the Vector Fusion visualization algorithm in transforming each signature from its n dimensions into 2 dimensions. An improved set of qualitative criterion is drawn to measure the goodness of the 2D data signature-based visual representation of the original nD data set. Finally, we provide empirical testing and discuss the results. © 2011 IEEE.

Lack of motivation is often cited as one of the most common reasons as to why only few burn patients with physical conditions do the recommended rehabilitation exercises regularly. Many games have been created to address this problem but most of them require subjects to wear sensors and devices which can be intrusive. A non-intrusive kinesthetic game that uses a Kinect sensor to incorporate range of motion (ROM) exercises was developed to motivate second-degree or higher burns patients in the sub-acute stage aged 5-8 years old in upper extremity rehabilitation. The game also aids therapists in monitoring each patient's progress by providing information regarding performance (i.e., reaction time, limb speed, and range of motion) and allows therapists to tweak parameters (e.g., joint to train, range area of focus) to address specific needs.

PUB (Paderborn University BSPLib) is a C library supporting the development of bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) algorithms. The BSP model allows an estimation of the execution time, avoids deadlocks and indeterminism. This paper presents a formal operational semantics for a C+PUB subset language using the Coq proof assistant and a certified N-body computation as example of using this formal semantics .

In this study, we used AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) to effectively represent expected normal traffic behavior of those weeks identified to be abnormal in the previous literature. Using the 2006 North Luzon Expressway North Bound (NLEX NB) Balintawak (Blk) segment's hourly traffic volume and time mean speed data sets provided by the National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS), we processed the data to generate time series plots of the weekly densities, the normal range of traffic density, and the abnormal. We obtained these through Quantum Frequency Algorithm (QFA). We fit the ARIMA model to some weeks of Blk which have evident occurrences of incidents as detected and crosschecked with the incidents data provided by NCTS. We performed a forecast of the fit and generated a time series plot of the superimposed plots of the actual data and the forecast for each of the top incidents generated in the previous literature. These plots provided a simplistic time-domain 2D visualizations that successfully exposed the abnormal points where incidents happened. These also provided an estimate of the expected traffic density behavior if incidents did not happen.
