Metaverse is envisaged as an evolving Internet paradigm that allows people to play, work, and socialize in a shared and virtual ecosystem with immersive and seamless experiences. However, multiple users simultaneously request massive resources for avatar physics emulation and graphical rendering. How to provide high-quality and low-latency meta-verse services for massive concurrent users is a crucial problem. In this work, an intelligent Grover search-based edge caching (GEC) algorithm is proposed for metaverse applications, where quantum theory is used to generate caching solutions with low time complexity. Metaverse scenes can be divided into massive environment panoramic frames and dynamic objects. An edge server is deployed to render and cache the common environment panoramic frames, while the dynamic objects are rendered on head-mounted displays (HMDs). Based on the quantum theory, the panoramic frames are split into several tiles and represented by qubits. The optimal caching results are obtained by performing unitary transformations for the tiles’ features. Finally, we provide extensive simulation experiments by a real- world metaverse dataset. The numerical results reveal that the GEC algorithm can reduce 11.09% of the service time and increase 13.34% of the cache hit rate on average by comparing it with two benchmark caching algorithms.

Recently, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with caching as a service (CaaS) was proposed to merge the functionalities of communication, computing, and caching (CCC) together. In this paper, we dissect the interactions of CCC in C-RAN with CaaS from two dimensions: physical resource dimension and time dimension. In the physical resource dimension, we identify how to segment the baseband unit (BBU) pool resources (i.e., computation and storage) into different types of virtual machines (VMs). In the time dimension, we address how the long-term resource segmentation in the BBU pool impacts on the short-term transmit beamforming at the remote radio heads. We formulate the problem as a stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming (SMINLP) to minimize the system cost, including the server cost, VM cost and wireless transmission cost. After a series of approximation, including sample average approximation, successive convex approximation, and semidefinite relaxation, the SMINLP is approximated as a global consensus problem. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is utilized to obtain the solution in a parallel fashion. Simulation results verify the convergence of our proposed algorithm, and also confirm that the proposed scheme is more cost-saving than that without considering the integration of CCC. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The paper addresses the problem of coverage testing of industrial automation software represented in the IEC 61499 standard, one of the recent standards for distributed control system design. Contrary to model-based testing (MBT), the paper focuses on implementation coverage, not model coverage. An approach based on evolutionary algorithms is presented which generates coverage test suites for both basic and composite IEC 61499 function blocks. It employs two third-party tools, FBDK and EvoSuite. The evaluation of the approach was performed on a set of control applications for two lab-scale demonstration plants. Results show that the approach is applicable and shows good performance at least on basic function blocks. The generated tests suites helped to discover several unreachable system parts, which pinpointed errors in the systems under test.

A method of image sequence encoding is presented, based on fractal compression of 3D data blocks without searching. A simple fractal transform scheme is used that only depends on one real-valued coefficient. We have developed a software codec for the Windows95 operating system, that carries out video streams in real-time. The method can be further developed for application to videoconferencing, videotelephony or streaming video over the Internet.

This paper investigates the three-dimensional (3D) downlink sparse channel estimation for tethered aerial platformenabled multi-user communication systems operating in a frequency division duplexing mode with large-scale antenna arrays. To this end, we design a non-identical Bernoulli-Gaussian distribution-based channel model that reflects the potential common sparsity caused by distant scatterers in a low-altitude environment. A low-complexity channel estimation algorithm without the need for prior knowledge of channel sparsity is proposed. It first applies a greedy pursuit algorithm to roughly estimate the common support set (CSS). Given the initial CSS, multi-user channels are then iteratively estimated and refined using a novel neighborhood-based channel estimation refinement scheme, which includes a decentralized sparse channel estimator to recover sparse channels accurately under non-i.i.d channel sparsity priors with low computation burden. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms its existing counterparts and approaches the performance limit with perfect knowledge of the CSS.

This paper deals with the implementation of an online platform for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), which provides anticipatory and deliberative tools to address societal expectations with regard to resrarch and innovation and mobilises information technology tools for inclusive, responsive and sustainable research. In particular, we have developed a Forum, which is a Web-based application and service for stakeholders (members of the RRI community) to deliberate and discuss about RRI. Different interaction modalities are supported by the Forum, such as: `Caucus Process', Suggestion Board, Partnership Initiative, etc. A special attention is devoted to the Citizen Jury and Tacit Knowledge modules that represent innovative features of our Forum. The outcomes show that our online Forum represents an effective solution to address RRI issues by adopting e-Government and knowledge management approaches. This work was carried out as part of EU FP7 Responsibility project.

This paper proposes an annealed particle swarm optimization based particle filter algorithm for articulated 3D human body tracking. In our algorithm, a sampling covariance and an annealing factor are incorporated into the velocity updating equation of particle swarm optimization (PSO). The sampling covariance and the annealing factor are initiated with appropriate values at the beginning of the PSO iteration, and `annealing' is carried out at reasonable steps. Experiments with multi-camera walking sequences from the Brown dataset show that: 1) the proposed tracker can effectively alleviate the problem of inconsistency between the image likelihood and the true model; 2) the tracker is also robust to noise and body self-occlusion.

Goal-conditioned hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) is a promising approach for scaling up reinforcement learning (RL) techniques. However, it often suffers from training inefficiency as the action space of the high-level, i.e., the goal space, is often large. Searching in a large goal space poses difficulties for both high-level subgoal generation and low-level policy learning. In this paper, we show that this problem can be effectively alleviated by restricting the high-level action space from the whole goal space to a k-step adjacent region of the current state using an adjacency constraint. We theoretically prove that the proposed adjacency constraint preserves the optimal hierarchical policy in deterministic MDPs, and show that this constraint can be practically implemented by training an adjacency network that can discriminate between adjacent and non-adjacent subgoals. Experimental results on discrete and continuous control tasks show that incorporating the adjacency constraint improves the performance of state-of-the-art HRL approaches in both deterministic and stochastic environments.
