This paper shows that the performance of multi-target tracking (MTT) systems can be significantly increased with stored program adaptive cellular array sensors. The primary motivation of the present work is to define a topographic microprocessor architecture for MTT with embedded sensors capable of operating in a process real-time manner. In the ongoing experiments it is assumed that the input data flow is acquired by a single array sensor and the data is processed on an adaptive CNN-UM architecture consisting of both a cellular nonlinear network (CNN) and digital signal processing (DSP) microprocessors. The algorithms designed for this combined hardware platform use adaptive multi-channel CNN solutions for instantaneous position estimation and morphological characterization of all visible targets and the DSP environment for distance calculation, gating, data association, track maintenance and dynamic target motion prediction. A special feature of the architecture is that it allows interactive communication between the sensor and the digital environment. The configuration of functional modules for various real-time applications is discussed. Using real-life video-flows, successful tracking of several maneuvering targets is demonstrated within the proposed adaptive multi-channel framework.

The paper is concerned with the implementation of cryptographic hash functions on the regular array of simple cellular neural network (CNN) cells with periodic boundary conditions. Cryptographic hash functions enable message origin authentication and validation of message content integrity. A class of cryptographic hash functions-termed Cartesian authentication codes-provide provable (unconditional) security for message authentication between two mutually trustful parties sharing a secret key. We succeeded in implementing existing constructions of Cartesian authentication codes on today's CNN Universal Machine (CNN-UM) chips. Here we prove that rather complex (binary) arithmetic can be performed on a simple CNN chip, by providing an algorithm to implement a specific Cartesian authentication code based on the computation of a polynomial expression over a finite field. The bitrate of the computation is in the 100 Mbit/sec range with existing chips.

The objective of this paper is to provide a framework for the implementation of programmable Opto-Electronic analogic CNN (POAC) computers embedding CNN Universal Chips. Specifically, a new method for optical CNN implementation is provided and some details are experimentally studied. The POAC architecture includes the integration of an optical processing system, such as a joint transform correlator, with the fast spatio-temporal processing capabilities of a CNN-UM chip. We have built and tested an optical sub-unit of this experimental optoelectronic architecture to examine their processing capabilities for complex target recognition tasks. Preliminary result of these measurements will also be presented. The main idea is to introduce stored programmability into optical computing.

Printed circuit board layout inspection methods are mostly based on local geometric information, therefore they are well suited to the cellular neural networks (CNN) paradigm. The wire break, the wire and isolation width violation and an "H" type short circuits detector analogic algorithms were tested on a 20*22 CNN Universal Machine (CNNUM) chip working in the CNN Chip Prototyping System (CCPS) and on the CNN Engine Board (CNNEB), and the results were compared to the commercially available inspection systems.

The printed circuit board layout inspection methods are mostly based on local geometric information, therefore it is well suited to the cellular neural network (CNN) paradigm. Two layout errors are detected here namely, the breaks in the wires and some kind of short circuits. The designed analogic algorithms to solve the problems above were tested on real life examples using an experimental system based on our CNN-HAC1M digital multiprocessor add-on-board, with 1 million cell space and 2.0 /spl mu/s/cell/iteration speed.

Data compressing, data coding, and communications in object-oriented multimedia applications like telepresence, computer-aided medical diagnosis, or telesurgery require an enormous computing power-in the order of trillions of operations per second (TeraOPS). Compared with conventional digital technology, cellular neural/nonlinear network (CNN)-based computing is capable of realizing these TeraOPS-range image processing tasks in a cost-effective implementation. To exploit the computing power of the CNN Universal Machine (CNN-UM), the CNN chipset architecture has been developed-a mixed-signal hardware platform for CNN-based image processing. One of the nonstandard components of the chipset is the cache memory of the analog array processor, the analog random access memory (ARAM). This paper reports on an ARAM chip that has been designed and fabricated in a 0.5-/spl mu/m CMOS technology. This chip consists of a fully addressable array of 32/spl times/256 analog memory registers and has a packing density of 637 analog-memory-cells/mm/sup 2/. Random and nondestructive access of the memory contents is available. Bottom-plate sampling techniques have been employed to eliminate harmonic distortion introduced by signal-dependent feedthrough. Signal coupling and interaction have been minimized by proper layout measures, including the use of protection rings and separate power supplies for the analog and the digital circuitry. This prototype features an equivalent resolution of up to 7 bits-measured by comparing the reconstructed waveform with the original input signal. Measured access times for writing/reading to/from the memory registers are of 200 ns. I/O rates via the l6-line-wide I/O bus exceed 10 Msamples/s. Storage time at room temperature is in the 80 to 100 ms range, without accuracy loss.

Novel results and experiments are presented on the application of cellular neural networks to binocular stereo vision. A cellular neural network (CNN) universal machine (UM) algorithm is described for depth estimation as part of a stereo-vision-based guidance system for autonomous vehicles. Being most amenable to revealing stereo correspondence, extraction of vertical edges is performed first. Then their distance from the observer in 3D space is established through a stereo matching scheme. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated on real-life highway imagery and it is shown that very low latency real-time operation is attainable via the CNN-UM.

A digital folk song search and retrieval system with a hand gesture based interface is presented. Tillarom is a comprehensive collection of original Hungarian folk songs recorded using different technologies such as phonographs and/or stereo DAT cassettes. This digital archive contains professional quality metadata records as well as MIDI recordings for presenting the different types of clustered folk songs. An AJAX based search and retrieval interface was developed that can be used together with optically recognized Kodály's hand signs to formulate queries through a web browser. The appearance based recognition of hand gestures utilizes contour analysis and SVM based classification. We evaluated the performance of the recognition of hand signs and investigated the main problems of their usage in our system. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In the area of geophysical and mining engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDE) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. Inside that one of the most exciting fields is the simulation of geothermal processes which can be used in the everyday energy-management. In this contribution a CNN-UM simulation of water reinjection are presented. Unfortunately the three dimensional - or the coupled multi-layered - computational structure and space-variant templates do not make it possible to utilize the huge computing power of the analog CNN-UM chips.
