Software systems often encounter various errors or exceptions in practice, and thus proper error handling code is essential to ensure the reliability of software systems. Unfortunately, error handling code is often bug-prone, while sufficiently testing them is challenging as such code often cannot be triggered under normal conditions. Motivated by this, recent studies have proposed to leverage software fault injection (SFI) based fuzzing to discover potential bugs in complicated error handling code. Despite the promising results achieved, their effectiveness and efficiency are still compromised in practice due to the huge search space of error sites, inadequate fuzzing guidance, and the overhead induced by context-sensitive SFI. To achieve effective and efficient testing of error handling code, this study presents AFL-FI, which first utilizes a similarity-based method to identify suspicious error sites, and then incorporates the idea of error site coverage to guide the fuzzing process. Finally, the design of lightweight context-sensitive SFI enables AFL-FI to execute test cases efficiently. We evaluate AFL-FI on eight large-scale open-source projects, and the results show that it can outperform existing state-of-the-art fuzzing tools significantly in terms of branch code coverage. More importantly, AFL-FI has discovered 13 previously unknown bugs, and all of them have been confirmed while 12 of them have been fixed. Besides, our evaluation also demonstrates that all the key designs of AFL- F I are effective that contribute significantly to its overall performance.

Automatically generating webpage code from webpage designs can significantly reduce the workload of front-end developers, and recent Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown promising potential in this area. However, our investigation reveals that most existing MLLMs are constrained by the absence of high-quality, large-scale, real-world datasets, resulting in inadequate performance in automated webpage code generation. To fill this gap, this paper introduces WebCode2M, a new dataset comprising 2.56 million instances, each containing a design image along with the corresponding webpage code and layout details. Sourced from real-world web resources, WebCode2M offers a rich and valuable dataset for webpage code generation across a variety of applications. The dataset quality is ensured by a scoring model that filters out instances with aesthetic deficiencies or other incomplete elements. To validate the effectiveness of WebCode2M, we introduce a baseline model based on the Vision Transformer (ViT), named WebCoder, and establish a benchmark for fair comparison. Additionally, we introduce a new metric, TreeBLEU, to measure the structural hierarchy recall. The benchmarking results demonstrate that our dataset significantly improves the ability of MLLMs to generate code from webpage designs, confirming its effectiveness and usability for future applications in front-end design tools. In the realm of recommendation systems, achieving real-time performance in embedding similarity tasks is often hindered by the limitations of traditional Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) methods, which suffer from high latency due to inefficient memory access patterns. This paper identifies these critical gaps and introduces AccelES, a novel approach that significantly enhances the efficiency of Top-K SpMV. Our method employs a two-stage calculation scheme: the first stage utilizes a compact, low-bit dataset to quickly identify the most relevant entries, while the second stage performs full-precision calculations solely on this pruned subset, thereby minimizing computational overhead. Furthermore, AccelES incorporates innovative matrix representations, Ultra-CSR and Random-CSR, which optimize memory bandwidth utilization. Experimental results demonstrate that AccelES accelerates performance, surpassing state-of-the-art FPGA, GPU, and CPU solutions by factors of 3.4×, 2.5×, and 153.3×, respectively, under controlled conditions. These advancements not only enhance processing speed but also significantly improve real-time performance in recommendation systems, establishing AccelES as a pivotal contribution to the field of Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication.

Communication-Efficient Distributed Learning with Local Immediate Error Compensation

Gradient compression with error compensation has attracted significant attention with the target of reducing the heavy communication overhead in distributed learning. However, existing compression methods either perform only unidirectional compression in one iteration with higher communication cost, or bidirectional compression with slower convergence rate. In this work, we propose the Local Immediate Error Compensated SGD (LIEC-SGD) optimization algorithm to break the above bottlenecks based on bidirectional compression and carefully designed compensation approaches. Specifically, the bidirectional compression technique is to reduce the communication cost, and the compensation technique compensates the local compression error to the model update immediately while only maintaining the global error variable on the server throughout the iterations to boost its efficacy. Theoretically, we prove that LIEC-SGD is superior to previous works in either the convergence rate or the communication cost, which indicates that LIEC-SGD could inherit the dual advantages from unidirectional compression and bidirectional compression. Transactional stream processing engines (TSPEs) have gained increasing attention due to their capability of processing real-time stream applications with transactional semantics. However, TSPEs remain susceptible to system failures and power outages. Existing TSPEs mainly focus on performance improvement, but still face a significant challenge to guarantee fault tolerance while offering high-performance services. We revisit commonly-used fault tolerance approaches in stream processing and database systems, and find that these approaches do not work well on TSPEs due to complex data dependencies. In this paper, we propose a novel TSPE called MorphStreamR to achieve fast failure recovery while guaranteeing low performance overhead at runtime. The key idea of MorphStreamR is to record intermediate results of resolved dependencies at runtime, and thus eliminate data dependencies to improve task parallelism during failure recovery. MorphStreamR further mitigates the runtime overhead by selectively tracking data dependencies and incorporating workload-aware log commitment. Experimental results show that MorphStreamR can significantly reduce the recovery time by up to 3.1 x while experiencing much less performance slowdown at runtime, compared with other applicable fault tolerance approaches.

DarkFed: A data-Free Backdoor Attack in Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) has been demonstrated to be susceptible to backdoor attacks. However, existing academic studies on FL backdoor attacks rely on a high proportion of real clients with main task-related data, which is impractical. In the context of real-world industrial scenarios, even the simplest defense suffices to defend against the state-of-the-art attack, 3DFed. A practical FL backdoor attack remains in a nascent stage of development. To bridge this gap, we present DarkFed. Initially, we emulate a series of fake clients, thereby achieving the attacker proportion typical of academic research scenarios. Given that these emulated fake clients lack genuine training data, we further propose a data-free approach to backdoor FL. Specifically, we delve into the feasibility of injecting a backdoor using a shadow dataset. Our exploration reveals that impressive attack performance can be achieved, even when there is a substantial gap between the shadow dataset and the main task dataset. This holds true even when employing synthetic data devoid of any semantic information as the shadow dataset. Subsequently, we strategically construct a series of covert backdoor updates in an optimized manner, mimicking the properties of benign updates, to evade detection by defenses. Joint Multi-grained Popularity-aware Graph Convolution Collaborative Filtering for Recommendation

Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs), with their efficient ability to capture high-order connectivity in graphs, have been widely applied in recommender systems. Stacking multiple neighbor aggregation is the major operation in GCNs. It implicitly captures popularity features because the number of neighbor nodes reflects the popularity of a node. However, existing GCN-based methods ignore a universal problem: users’ sensitivity to item popularity is differentiated, but the neighbor aggregations in GCNs actually fix this sensitivity through Graph Laplacian Normalization, leading to suboptimal personalization. In this work, we propose to model multi-grained popularity features and jointly learn them together with high-order connectivity, to match the differentiation of user preferences exhibited in popularity features. Specifically, we develop a Joint Multi-grained Popularity-aware Graph Convolution Collaborative Filtering model, short for JMP-GCF, which uses a popularity-aware embedding generation to construct multi-grained popularity features, and uses the idea of joint learning to capture the signals within and between different granularities of popularity features that are relevant for modeling user preferences. Additionally, we propose a multistage stacked training strategy to speed up model convergence. Graph convolutional network (GCN) has achieved enormous success in learning structural information from unstructured data. As graphs become increasingly large, distributed training for GCNs is severely prolonged by frequent cross-worker communications. Existing efforts to improve the training efficiency often come at the expense of GCN performance, while the communication overhead persists. In this paper, we propose PSC-GCN, a holistic pipelined framework for distributed GCN training with communication-efficient sampling and inclusion-aware caching, to address the communication bottleneck while ensuring satisfactory model performance. Specifically, we devise an asynchronous pre-fetching scheme to retrieve stale statistics (features, embedding, gradient) of boundary nodes in advance, such that the embedding aggregation and model update are pipelined with statistics transmission. To alleviate communication volume and staleness effect, we introduce a variance-reduction based sampling policy, which prioritizes inner nodes over boundary ones for reducing the access frequency to remote neighbors, thus mitigating cross-worker statistics exchange. Complementing graph sampling, a feature caching module is co-designed to buffer hot nodes with high inclusion probability, ensuring that frequently sampled nodes will be available in local memory. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets show the superiority of PSC-GCN over state-of-the-art methods, where we can reduce training time by 72%-80% without sacrificing model accuracy.

Exploring Heterogeneity and Uncertainty for Graph-based Cognitive Diagnosis Models in Intelligent Education

Graph-based Cognitive Diagnosis (CD) has attracted much research interest due to its strong ability on inferring students’ proficiency levels on knowledge concepts. While graph-based CD models have demonstrated remarkable performance, we contend that they still cannot achieve optimal performance due to the neglect of edge heterogeneity and uncertainty. Edges involve both correct and incorrect response logs, indicating heterogeneity. Meanwhile, a response log can have uncertain semantic meanings, e.g., a correct log can indicate true mastery or fortunate guessing, and a wrong log can indicate a lack of understanding or a careless mistake. In this paper, we propose an Informative Semantic-aware Graph-based Cognitive Diagnosis model (ISG-CD), which focuses on how to utilize the heterogeneous graph in CD and minimize effects of uncertain edges. Specifically, to explore heterogeneity, we propose a semantic-aware graph neural networks based CD model. To minimize effects of edge uncertainty, we propose an Informative Edge Differentiation layer from an information bottleneck perspective, which suggests keeping a minimal yet sufficient reliable graph for CD in an unsupervised way. We formulate this process as maximizing mutual information between the reliable graph and response logs, while minimizing mutual information between the reliable graph and the original graph. After that, we prove that mutual information maximization can be theoretically converted to the classic binary cross entropy loss function, while minimizing mutual information can be realized by the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion. Finally, we adopt an alternating training strategy for optimizing learnable parameters of both the semantic-aware graph neural networks based CD model and the edge differentiation layer.
