It has been discovered that Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) encounter a remarkable drop in performance when multiple layers are piled up. The main factor that accounts for why deep GCNs fail lies in over-smoothing, which isolates the network output from the input with the increase of network depth, weakening expressivity and trainability. In this paper, we start by investigating refined measures upon DropEdge—an existing simple yet effective technique to relieve over-smoothing. We term our method as DropEdge++ for its two structure-aware samplers in contrast to DropEdge: layer-dependent sampler and feature-dependent sampler. Regarding the layer-dependent sampler, we interestingly find that increasingly sampling edges from the bottom layer yields superior performance than the decreasing counterpart as well as DropEdge. We theoretically reveal this phenomenon with Mean-Edge-Number (MEN), a metric closely related to over-smoothing. For the feature-dependent sampler, we associate the edge sampling probability with the feature similarity of node pairs, and prove that it further correlates the convergence subspace of the output layer with the input features. Extensive experiments on several node classification benchmarks, including both full- and semi- supervised tasks, illustrate the efficacy of DropEdge++ and its compatibility with a variety of backbones by achieving generally better performance over DropEdge and the no-drop version. The advent of Persistent Memory (PM) necessitates an evolution of Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technologies for supporting remote data persistence. Previous software-based solutions require remote CPU intervention and postpone the visibility of remote persistence. In this paper, we design several hardware-supported RDMA primitives to flush data from the volatile cache of RDMA Network Interface Cards (RNICs) to the PM. We also propose durable RPCs based on the proposed RDMA Flush primitives to support remote data persistence and fast failure recovery. We emulate the performance of RDMA Flush primitives through other RDMA prim-itives, and compare our proposals with several state-of-the-art RPCs in a real testbed equipped with PM and InfiniBand networks. Experimental results show that our proposals can improve the throughput of RPCs by up to 90%, and reduce the 99th percentile latency by up to 49%. The experimental studies also provide instructive guidelines for designing RDMA-based distributed PM systems.

As a markup language for describing web resources, RDF is often used to represent graph data. SPARQL is a standard query language for RDF data, which is convenient in querying RDF. As RDF data grows rapidly, how to deal with complex queries over large-scale data in a reasonable time still remains many challenges. The existing RDF query systems often fail to respond within a reasonable time when dealing with complex SPARQL queries. Therefore, we propose an efficient parallel SPARQL query system and novel in three aspects. First, the proposed design provides a dynamic selectivity estimation strategy and generates an optimal query plan for parallel query processing. Second, the new design proposes a parallel processing model to maximize the parallelism of the system. Finally, chunk-based task distribution strategy is implemented to assist the parallel processing model. Based on the proposed design, we implement an efficient parallel query system (Grace). Extensive experiments on LUBM and BTC benchmarks show that Grace outperforms RDF-3X, Virtuoso, TripleBit and achieves a good performance of scalability on the number of threads.

Multi-task representation learning with multi-view graph convolutional networks

Link prediction and node classification are two important downstream tasks of network representation learning. Existing methods have achieved acceptable results but they perform these two tasks separately, which requires a lot of duplication of work and ignores the correlations between tasks. Besides, conventional models suffer from the identical treatment of information of multiple views, thus they fail to learn robust representation for downstream tasks. To this end, we tackle link prediction and node classification problems simultaneously via multi-task multi-view learning in this paper. We first explain the feasibility and advantages of multi-task multi-view learning for these two tasks. Then we propose a novel model named as MT-MVGCN to perform link prediction and node classification tasks simultaneously. More specifically, we design a multi-view graph convolutional network to extract abundant information of multiple views in a network, which is shared by different tasks. We further apply two attention mechanisms: view attention mechanism and task attention mechanism to make views and tasks adjust the view fusion process. Moreover, view reconstruction can be introduced as an auxiliary task to boost the performance of the proposed model. Experiments on real-world network datasets demonstrate that our model is efficient yet effective, and outperforms advanced baselines in these two tasks. © 2021, CC BY.

Knowledge graph (KG) representation learning aims to map entities and relations into a low-dimensional representation space, showing significant potential in many tasks. Existing approaches follow two categories: (1) Graph-based approaches encode KG elements into vectors using structural score functions. (2) Text-based approaches embed text descriptions of entities and relations via pre-trained language models (PLMs), further fine-tuned with triples. We argue that graph-based approaches struggle with sparse data, while text-based approaches face challenges with complex relations. To address these limitations, we propose a unified Text-Augmented Attention-based Recurrent Network, bridging the gap between graph and natural language. Specifically, we employ a graph attention network based on local influence weights to model local structural information and utilize a PLM based prompt learning to learn textual information, enhanced by a mask-reconstruction strategy based on global influence weights and textual contrastive learning for improved robustness and generalizability. Besides, to effectively model multi-hop relations, we propose a novel semantic-depth guided path extraction algorithm and integrate cross-attention layers into recurrent neural networks to facilitate learning the long-term relation dependency and offer an adaptive attention mechanism for varied-length information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model exhibits superiority over existing models across KG completion and question-answering tasks.

To process large-scale real-time data streams, existing distributed stream processing systems (DSPSs) leverage different stream partitioning strategies. The one-to-many data partitioning strategy plays an important role in various applications. With one-to-many data partitioning, an upstream processing instance sends a generated tuple to a potentially large number of downstream processing instances. Existing DSPSs leverage an instance-oriented communication mechanism, where an upstream instance transmits a tuple to different downstream instances separately. However, in one-to-many data partitioning, multiple downstream instances typically run on the same machine to exploit multi-core resources. Therefore, a DSPS actually sends a data item to a machine multiple times, raising significant unnecessary costs for serialization and communication. We show that such a mechanism can lead to serious performance bottleneck due to CPU overload. To address the problem, we design and implement Whale, an efficient RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) assisted distributed stream processing system. Two factors contribute to the efficiency of this design. First, we propose a novel RDMA-assisted stream multicast scheme with a self-adjusting non-blocking tree structure to alleviate the CPU workloads of an upstream instance during one-to-many data partitioning. Second, we re-design the communication mechanism in existing DSPSs by replacing the instance-oriented communication with a new worker-oriented communication scheme, which saves significant costs for redundant serialization and communication. We implement Whale on top of Apache Storm and conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate its performance with large-scale real world datasets. The results show that Whale achieves 56.6x improvement of system throughput and 97% reduction of processing latency compared to existing designs.

Influence of nuclear physics inputs and astrophysical conditions on r-process

The rapid neutron-capture process(r-process) is one of the main mechanisms to explain the origin of heavy elements in the universe. Although the past decades have seen great progress in understanding this process, the related nuclear physics inputs to r-process models include significant uncertainty. In this study, ten nuclear mass models, including macroscopic, macroscopicmicroscopic, and microscopic models, are used to calculate the β-decay rates and neutron-capture rates of the neutron-rich isotopes for the r-process simulations occurring in three classes of astrophysical conditions. The final r-process abundances include uncertainties introduced by the nuclear mass model mainly through the variation of neutron-capture rates, whereas the uncertainties of β-decay rates make a relatively small contribution. The uncertainties in different astrophysical scenarios are also investigated,and are found to be connected to the diverse groups of nuclei produced during nucleosynthesis.

Energy trading in distributed microgrids represents an effective means of enhancing the utilization of renewable energy. However, the aggregation of large-scale consumption data may encounter business scalability issues and potential privacy exposure concerns, necessitating the development of novel secure and scalable frameworks for integrating consumption demands between prosumer and microgrid entities. we research focuses on providing a user-friendly transaction model for consumers and microgrid operators. Firstly, a privacy aggregation scheme for user resource requests is designed to ensure the security and decentralization of user data. In addition, the model employs a bidirectional heterogeneous resource allocation mechanism to support the optimal allocation of multiple resources, such as renewable energy, power assets, energy storage devices, and carbon credits, among different microgrids. Finally, a microgrid transaction prototype has been constructed on the Truffle development framework. In this context, smart contracts has been designed to ensure that the transactions are carried out automatically. Experimental results indicate that the scheme provides enhanced security for multi-resource trading in a cluster context relative to existing methodologies. The number of transactions increases linearly with the resource overhead, resulting in more efficient utilization of energy trading. Furthermore, the framework's scalability has been demonstrated through both temporal and spatial considerations. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Pedestrian movement on stairs is a complex three-dimensional dynamic process. However, previous models are inherently limited in that they ignored the significantly effect of stair configurations. This paper presents an extended three-dimensional force-based model to describe pedestrian movement and evacuation dynamics on stairs. By calibrating with previous real-human experiments, this unique model is able to accurately reproduce the velocity/density relation under a wide range of inclination stairways. Then, we explored the basic questions about pedestrian dynamics on complex stair configurations. The results demonstrated that: (1) this unique model shows good universality for simulating pedestrian dynamics on stairs;(2) Under the combined effect of narrow exit and stairs, the stair part is the primary factor that affects the specific capacity;(3) the optimal stair dimension is tread drpth≤0.325m & riser height≤0.1m;(4) pedestrian density and the geometric layout of the stairwell significantly influence pedestrian merging ratio at the merging zone. © 2022, The Authors.
