Zero-shot object detection (ZSD), the task that extends conventional detection models to detecting objects from unseen categories, has emerged as a new challenge in computer vision. Most existing approaches tackle the ZSD task with a strict mapping-transfer strategy that may lead to suboptimal ZSD results: 1) the learning process of these models neglects the available semantic information on unseen classes, which can easily bias towards the seen categories;2) the original visual feature space is not well-structured for the ZSD task due to the lack of discriminative information. To address these issues, we develop a novel Semantics-Guided Contrastive Network for ZSD, named ContrastZSD, a detection framework that first brings contrastive learning mechanism into the realm of zero-shot detection. Particularly, ContrastZSD incorporates two semantics-guided contrastive learning subnets that contrast between region-category and region-region pairs respectively. The pairwise contrastive tasks take advantage of supervision signals derived from both the ground truth label and class similarity information. By performing supervised contrastive learning over those explicit semantic supervision, the model can learn more knowledge about unseen categories to avoid the bias problem to seen concepts, while optimizing the visual data structure to be more discriminative for better visual-semantic alignment. Extensive experiments are conducted on two popular benchmarks for ZSD, i.e., PASCAL VOC and MS COCO. Pareto-aware Neural Architecture Generation for Diverse Computational Budgets

Designing feasible and effective architectures under diverse computational budgets, incurred by different applications/devices, is essential for deploying deep models in real-world applications. To achieve this goal, existing methods often perform an independent architecture search process for each target budget, which is very inefficient yet unnecessary. More critically, these independent search processes cannot share their learned knowledge (i.e., the distribution of good architectures) with each other and thus often result in limited search results. To address these issues, we propose a Pareto-aware Neural Architecture Generator (PNAG) which only needs to be trained once and dynamically produces the Pareto optimal architecture for any given budget via inference. To train our PNAG, we learn the whole Pareto frontier by jointly finding multiple Pareto optimal architectures under diverse budgets. Such a joint search algorithm not only greatly reduces the overall search cost but also improves the search results. W-net: A two-stage convolutional network for nucleus detection in Histopathology Image

Pathological diagnosis is the gold standard for cancer diagnosis, but it is labor-intensive, in which tasks such as cell detection, classification, and counting are particularly prominent. A common solution for automating these tasks is using nucleus segmentation technology. However, it is hard to train a robust nucleus segmentation model, due to several challenging problems, i.e., the nucleus adhesion, stacking, and excessive fusion with the background. Recently, some researchers proposed a series of automatic nucleus segmentation methods based on point annotation, which can significant improve the model performance. Nevertheless, the point annotation needs to be marked by experienced pathologists. In order to take advantage of segmentation methods based on point annotation, further alleviate the manual workload, and make cancer diagnosis more efficient and accurate, it is necessary to develop an automatic nucleus detection algorithm, which can automatically and efficiently locate the position of the nucleus in the pathological image and extract valuable information for pathologists. In this paper, we propose a W-shaped network for automatic nucleus detection. Different from the traditional U-Net based method, mapping the original pathology image to the target mask directly, our proposed method split the detection task into two sub-tasks. The first sub-task maps the original pathology image to the binary mask, then the binary mask is mapped to the density mask in the second sub-task. After the task is split, the task’s difficulty is significantly reduced, and the network’s overall performance is improved. In order to evaluate the model efficiency in system application, we integrate the automatic nucleus detection model into the digital pathology image analysis system, Pathology Information Management & Integration Platform (PIMIP). Clairvoyance: Intelligent route planning for electric buses based on urban big data

Nowadays many cities around the world have introduced electric buses to optimize urban traffic and reduce the local carbon emissions. In order to cut the carbon emissions and maximize the utility of electric buses, it is important to choose suitable routes for them. Traditionally, route selection is on the basis of dedicated surveys, which are costly in time and labor. In this paper, we mainly focus attention on planning electric bus routes intelligently, depending on the unique needs of each region throughout the city. We propose Clairvoyance, a route planning system that leverages a deep neural network and a multilayer perceptron to predict the future people’s trips and the future transportation carbon emission in the whole city, respectively. Given the future information of people’s trips and transportation carbon emission, we utilize a greedy mechanism to recommend bus routes for electric buses that will depart in an ideal state. Furthermore, representative features of the two neural networks are extracted from the heterogeneous urban datasets. We evaluate our approach through extensive experiments on the real-world data sources in Zhuhai, China. The results show that our designed neural network-based algorithms are consistently superior to the typical baselines. Additionally, the recommended routes for electric buses are helpful in reducing the peak value of carbon emissions and making full use of electric buses in the city. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Large-scale distributed deep learning is of great importance in various applications. For distributed training, the inter-node gradient communication often becomes the performance bottleneck. Gradient sparsification has been proposed to reduce the communication overhead. However, the sparsification only arbitrarily selects a small fraction of gradients, while the efficiency of selection dimension has been overlooked. Furthermore, gradient staleness is inevitable after applying the sparsification which will ultimately lead to model divergence. In this paper, we propose a staleness-compensated sparse stochastic gradient descent algorithm, GradSA, to improve the training efficiency. Layer-level gradients are sparsified to reduce the communication overhead, which conform to the characteristics of the network structure, and historical accumulation of the approximated gradients is utilized to speed up convergence. We demonstrate the model convergence acceleration and the efficiency of our layer-level selection over existing state-of-the-art works, such as DGC, TernGrad, and 8-Bit quantization. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ASGN: An Active Semi-supervised Graph Neural Network for Molecular Property Prediction

Molecular property prediction (e.g., energy) is an essential problem in chemistry and biology. Unfortunately, many supervised learning methods usually suffer from the problem of scarce labeled molecules in the chemical space, where such property labels are generally obtained by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation which is extremely computational costly. An effective solution is to incorporate the unlabeled molecules in a semi-supervised fashion. However, learning semi-supervised representation for large amounts of molecules is challenging, including the joint representation issue of both molecular essence and structure, the conflict between representation and property leaning. Here we propose a novel framework called Active Semi-supervised Graph Neural Network (ASGN) by incorporating both labeled and unlabeled molecules. Specifically, ASGN adopts a teacher-student framework. In the teacher model, we propose a novel semi-supervised learning method to learn general representation that jointly exploits information from molecular structure and molecular distribution. Then in the student model, we target at property prediction task to deal with the learning loss conflict. At last, we proposed a novel active learning strategy in terms of molecular diversities to select informative data during the whole framework learning. Divide and Contrast: Source-free Domain Adaptation via Adaptive Contrastive Learning

We investigate a practical domain adaptation task, called source-free unsupervised domain adaptation (SFUDA), where the source pretrained model is adapted to the target domain without access to the source data. Existing techniques mainly leverage self-supervised pseudo-labeling to achieve class-wise global alignment [24] or rely on local structure extraction that encourages the feature consistency among neighborhoods [48]. While impressive progress has been made, both lines of methods have their own drawbacks – the "global" approach is sensitive to noisy labels while the "local" counterpart suffers from the source bias. In this paper, we present Divide and Contrast (DaC), a new paradigm for SFUDA that strives to connect the good ends of both worlds while bypassing their limitations. Based on the prediction confidence of the source model, DaC divides the target data into source-like and target-specific samples, where either group of samples is treated with tailored goals under an adaptive contrastive learning framework. Specifically, the source-like samples are utilized for learning global class clustering thanks to their relatively clean labels. The more noisy target-specific data are harnessed at the instance level for learning the intrinsic local structures. We further align the source-like domain with the target-specific samples using a memory-based maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) loss to reduce the distribution mismatch. Extensive experiments on VisDA, Office-Home, and the more challenging DomainNet have verified the superior performance of DaC over current state-of-the-art approaches. Page migration has long been adopted in hybrid memory systems comprising dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and non-volatile memories (NVMs), to improve the system performance and energy efficiency. However, page migration introduces some side effects, such as more translation lookaside buffer (TLB) misses, breaking memory contiguity, and extra memory accesses due to page table updating. In this paper, we propose superpage-friendly page table called SuperPT to reduce the performance overhead of serving TLB misses. By leveraging a virtual hashed page table and a hybrid DRAM allocator, SuperPT performs address translations in a flexible and efficient way while still remaining the contiguity within the migrated pages. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In the future mobile communication system, inter-cell interference becomes a serious problem due to the intensive deployment of cells and terminals. Traditional interference coordination schemes take long time for optimization in ultra-dense networks. Meanwhile, due to the increase of factors affecting communication and in order to better meet the communication needs of each terminal, an interference coordination scheme needs to fully consider multiple characteristic parameters of the terminal, which will further increase the scheme’s computational time. Therefore, we should compress all the data through sparsification of parameters before optimization. There are many terminal parameters, and the essence of sparsification of parameters is to rank terminals. In this paper, a graph-based terminal ranking scheme is designed. First, each terminal can be represented by its multiple parameters. Then, all terminals are used as the vertexes in the graph to form a complete weighted graph, and edge weights represent the degree of dissimilarity between terminals. A ranking of terminals is obtained by finding a minimum Hamiltonian path in the graph. Finally, the ranking of all parameter sequences is obtained according to terminals ranking, which makes the sparsity of all parameter sequences better. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can accomplish sparsification of parameter sequences effectively, especially when the number of sequences increases. In addition, compared with the optimal coordination of traditional scheme, this scheme improves the fairness of the system while ensuring high system capacity, and dramatically reduces the computational time of interference coordination. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2020.
