A compact ultra-wideband antenna fed by coplanar waveguide is reported in this paper. The designed antenna consists of a trumpet-shaped planar radiation patch and a symmetrical ground patch. Two Mickey-Mouse shaped perturbative slots and two quarterelliptical grooves are etched on the ground to obtain better impedance matching. By prolonging the radiation patch, a very wide −10 dB bandwidth of covering 300 MHz–18 GHz with bandwidth ratio up to 60: 1 and omnidirectional coverage are achieved. Furthermore, the proposed antenna is able to cover P(0.3-1G), L(1-2G), S(2-4G), C(4-8G), X(8-12G), and Ku (12-18G) bands, which is much preferred for wideband spectrum monitoring. © 2025, Electromagnetics Academy. RDW-YOLOv8n: a deeply focused algorithm for small object traffic sign detection under complex weather conditions

In autonomous driving technology, accurate detection of traffic signs is crucial for vehicles to perceive their surrounding road conditions. However, the detection of small traffic signs is often affected by changes in lighting and obstruction from obstacles under complex weather conditions, resulting in inaccurate localization and missed detections. To address these challenges, we introduce a new optimized algorithm - RDW-YOLOv8n. We utilize an enhanced small object layer integrated with the ResCBAM module to replace the original large object layer. Unlike traditional methods of introducing small object layers, this method improves detection accuracy by enhancing the network's perception of small objects through residual attention while effectively addressing the issue of missed detections present in the original algorithm and significantly reducing the number of model parameters. In addition, lightweight depthwise convolution (DWConv) is introduced to further streamline the model without sacrificing accuracy. Finally, the original loss function is replaced with the WIoU loss function to enable the model to focus on the average quality of anchor boxes, balancing the learning of high- and low-quality samples. Experiments conducted on the CCTSDB 2021 dataset show that the RDW-YOLOv8n algorithm achieves a mean average precision (mAP50) of 84.7% and a recall rate (R) of 75.3%, which represent improvements of 6.9 and 5.2 percentage points over the baseline model, respectively. Meanwhile, the model parameter count is reduced by 68.11%, and the F1 score increases by 3.1%. These results effectively demonstrate the detection performance of this algorithm under complex weather. When compared with recent advanced algorithms, RDW-YOLOv8n achieves the highest mAP50 with the smallest number of parameters, highlighting the strong competitiveness and superiority of this algorithm. © 2025 SPIE and IS&T.

The $$H_{\infty }$$ control of singular time-delay systems (STDs) with proportional-differential (PD) feedback of partial states is the main topic of this work. A new PD feedback controller with partial states is constructed, and the admissibility and $$H_{\infty }$$ control problems are studied by figuring out the differential-algebraic equations of a class of STDs with external disturbances. Additionally, robust admissibility and robust admissibilization conditions are derived, allowing for the reduction of conservatism and the improvement of control impact with reduced computation. The utilization of a more concise controller in this study facilitates further reduction of decision variables compared to previous studies, while effectively striking a balance between conservatism, the quantity of decision variables, and control efficacy. Lastly, a few numerical examples illustrate the aforementioned claims.

In this study, the $$H_\infty $$ control problem of a linear time-delay system is considered. A proportional–integral observer and equivalent-input-disturbance method (the PIO-based-EID method) provides a more accurate estimation of the system state and allows for a more flexible system design for enhanced stability. Therefore, in this study, the method is used to improve the disturbance suppression performance of the system. Firstly, an EID estimate is obtained based on the PIO-based-EID method. Subsequently, a static output-feedback control law including EID estimation is developed to ensure excellent control effect. Thirdly, the stability of the closed-loop system is demonstrated by the results of linear-matrix-inequalities to match the $$H_\infty $$ control performance specification. The control law gain and observer gain are then determined using the singular value decomposition method. Ultimately, simulation results from MATLAB software are analyzed to confirm the method’s feasibility.

A Compact Antenna Array With Integrated Feeding Structure for intelligent Vehicular Transportation Systems Application

A compact antenna array is developed for W-band vehicle mounted millimeter-wave radar, also suitable for internet of things (IoT) and intelligent vehicular transportation systems (IVTS). The proposed array provides a flat shoulder shaped radiation pattern, obtained using a beamforming algorithm, enabling medium-and long-range radar detection and information transmission between wireless devices. The beamforming algorithm determines the excitation amplitudes and phases of each sub-array. Power dividers are designed using a scheme of equal/unequal power division to meet the requirements of amplitude. And phase shifters are used to create required phases. To obtain a compact design, a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) feeding structure are employed to integrate power dividers, phase shifters, and waveguide transitions into a single part. Quadratic recursive exhaustive search in combination with full-wave simulation is used to optimize the design. Further improvements are made to achieve a more compact feeding structure. The realized array provides a stable flat shoulder shaped radiation pattern in the H-plane. In addition, its maximal gain appears in the boresight direction, which is usually a challenge for patch element array. The realized gain is 22 dBi, and the ripple in the shoulder range is less than 2.3 dB, which is better than other designs. The feeding structure is only 14mm× 16mm large, showing a minimized design. The demonstrated antenna presents itself to be an excellent hardware candidate for IoT and IVTS. © 2014 IEEE.

Improving Accuracy of the IμUWB fusion Positioning Approach Utilizing ESEKF and VBUKF for Underground Coal Mining Working Face

The high-precision positioning of the shearer in underground coal mines remains a significant challenge task for realizing automation and intelligent coal mining. Most of the presently conventional positioning approaches, nonetheless, tend to deliver low accuracy and unreliable estimations in the GPSdenied underground coal mine environment. Additionally, the current experiments remain in the simulation verification stage while lacking of the real field experiments. In order to improve reliability and positioning accuracy of target node (TN) in coal mines, this paper proposes a fusion positioning scheme with the combination of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Ultrawideband (UWB) based on error state extended Kalman filter (ESEKF) approach with the utilization of the available measurements obtained from IMU system and the established UWB localization system. Subsequently, the VBUKF method that incorporates the variational Bayesian (VB) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is implemented to the result of fusion localization with consideration of the changeable measurement noise to further eliminate the trajectory error and refine the final estimation accuracy. Furthermore, to bridge the research gap of the real field experiments using the IμUWB fusion system, the experimental investigation is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method in the underground coal mine environment. The experimental results demonstrate that the presented ESEKF method, after applying the VBUKF smoothing, is capable to achieve better performances than the contrasted methods in terms of localization, and also can significantly improve the positioning accuracy of the shearer in the coal mining working face. © 2025 IEEE.

Modality Unified Attack for Omni-Modality Person Re-Identification

Deep learning based person re-identification (re-id) models have been widely employed in surveillance systems. Recent studies have demonstrated that black-box single-modality and cross-modality re-id models are vulnerable to adversarial examples (AEs), leaving the robustness of multi-modality re-id models unexplored. Due to the lack of knowledge about the specific type of model deployed in the target black-box surveillance system, we aim to generate modality unified AEs for omni-modality (single-, cross- and multi-modality) re-id models. Specifically, we propose a novel Modality Unified Attack method to train modality-specific adversarial generators to generate AEs that effectively attack different omni-modality models. A multi-modality model is adopted as the surrogate model, wherein the features of each modality are perturbed by metric disruption loss before fusion. To collapse the common features of omnimodality models, Cross Modality Simulated Disruption approach is introduced to mimic the cross-modality feature embeddings by intentionally feeding images to non-corresponding modality-specific subnetworks of the surrogate model. Moreover, Multi Modality Collaborative Disruption strategy is devised to facilitate the attacker to comprehensively corrupt the informative content of person images by leveraging a multi modality feature collaborative metric disruption loss. Extensive experiments show that our MUA method can effectively attack the omni-modality re-id models, achieving 55.9%, 24.4%, 49.0% and 62.7% mean mAP Drop Rate, respectively. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

FGF3D: A Point Cloud 3D Object Detection Algorithm Based on Fine-Grained Feature fusion

In the existing two-stage point cloud 3D object detection task, there are problems such as the lack of fine-grained and insufficient sparsity of point cloud features extracted by the backbone network, the lack of spatial-channel fine-grained fusion of bird-eye-view (BEV) features, and the lack of multi-dimensional representation of ROI pooling features. We innovatively propose a new two-stage algorithm based on fine-grained feature fusion, called FGF3D. We construct a sparsegrained aggregation network (SGANet) to elevate the representation of point cloud features. Furthermore, we innovatively propose a spatial-channel fine-grained fusion module (SCFFM) to enrich BEV features and efficiently extract fine-grained features. Further, we propose a global-local feature pooling fusion module (GLFP), which effectively fuses local detail object features and global features, enhances multi-dimensional representations, and facilitates the refined regression of proposal boxes. Without bells and whistles, FGF3D attains excellent performance on two autonomous driving benchmarks, with detection accuracies of up to 64.10% on KITTI, 57.82% on ONCE. © 2025 IEEE. High-quality badminton shuttlecock heads are made from cork discs derived from natural oak bark, which exhibit complex cracks and wrinkles, causing inefficiency and inconsistency in quality screening. To address this, we propose a deep learning-based detection algorithm using YOLOv5. The YOLOv5 model was optimized for cork disc characteristics by introducing an attention mechanism to enhance feature representation and designing a post-processing algorithm to improve detection accuracy. The optimized model, trained on a custom cork disc dataset using an NVIDIA RTX3080 GPU, achieved 86.7% mFl and 81.5% mAP, outperforming other mainstream algorithms. Finally, the system utilizes Nvidia's edge computing device Jetson Nano as the computational core, deploying the YOLOv5 model and designing the graphical interface on Ubuntu 18.04. Real-time cork disc image acquisition is achieved using binocular industrial cameras and fiber optic sensors, while a uniformly rotating turntable and diversion device are designed to facilitate the transfer of cork disc. Experimental results show that the system achieves a 92.75% classification accuracy for four quality grades with an inference time of 87.6ms, meeting the requirements for real-time cork disc quality inspection. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.
