This paper appl.es a heterogeneous parallel ecology-inspired algorithm (pECO) to solve a complex problem from bioinformatics. The ecological-inspired algorithm represents a new perspective to develop cooperative evolutionary algorithms. Different algorithms are appl.ed to compose the comput.tional ecosystem in a heterogeneous model. The aim is to search low energy conformations for the Protein Structure Prediction problem, concerning the 3D-AB off-lattice model. Being a problem that demands a lot of comput.tional effort, a parallel master-slave architecture is employed in order to allow the appl.cation of the comput.tional ecosystem in a reasonable comput.ng time. From the results, the pECO approach obtained the best conformation for the 13 amino-acid long sequence and competitive results for the other sequences.

Research regarding stroke indicates that short elapsed time between accident and treatment can be fundamental to allow saving patient's life and avoid future sequels. This paper describes a model for monitoring and rescue victims in situations of possible stroke occurrence. It uses stroke symptoms that can be monitored by mobile equipment, ambient intelligence and artificial neural networks. The model is independent from human operation and appl.cations or third parties devices, therefore adding facilities to increase the quality of life for people with stroke sequel, due to constant monitoring and follow-up provided, allowing the stroke patient to consider a recovery period with greater autonomy. A prototype based on free software platforms was developed, in order to assess the accuracy and the time elapsed between the prototype to detect and to send an alert. The results indicate a positive outlook for the work continuity.

Physical biometrics technologies are introduced to the login process on smart devices. However, many of them have several disadvantages: requirement of embedding special sensor, limited environment to use and copy of key information for authentication. In this research, we proposed a new biometrics technique which can capture user's inimitable behavioral features in his/her spontaneous flick reactions on a touch-screen display for unlocking the device when it wakes up. For practical use of the technique, we adopted one-class classification approaches and they achieved about 1-2% EERs for 2500 samples from 50 subjects.

Human consciousness is a target of research in multiple fields of knowledge, that presents it as an important characteristic to better handle complex and diverse situations. Artificial consciousness models have arose, together with theories that attempt to model what we understand about consciousness, in a way that could be implemented an artificial conscious being. The main motivations to study artificial consciousness are related to the creation of agents more similar to human beings, in order to build more efficient machines. This paper presents an experiment using the Global Workspace Theory and the LIDA Model to build a "conscious" mobile robot in a virtual environment, using the LIDA framework as a implementation of the LIDA Model. The main objective is to evaluate if it is possible to use conscience as implemented by the LIDA framework to simplify decision making processes during navigation of a mobile robot subject to interaction with people, as part of a cicerone robot development.
