In this article, a complete 3-D integrated sensing system intended for practical applications was presented on a printed circuit board (PCB) board, starting with lead-free piezoelectric films deposited using an RF sputtering system, an MEMS structure design/simulation, device fabrication, and a signal processing chip design, including charge- to-voltage transformation, signal amplification, 60-Hz noise rejection, and low-power RF wireless transmission chip for remote monitoring. Both the signal processing chips and the RF wireless transmitter chips were manufactured using the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) CMOS process. The piezoelectric coefficient d33 was measured as 27.21 pm/V of the proposed ZnO:Li doped Mg (MLZO) films. To meet the frequency specifications of industrial applications, the ring-structure devices with a 7730-Hz resonance frequency were designed using ANSYS simulation software. There was only a 0.39% deviation compared to the simulation results with the actual experimental data. The measurement results of the proposed system showed that the acceleration detection range was approximately 137 mV/ g (p-p). The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) adopted in the wireless transmitter chip had a four-leaf clover structure inductor with two symmetrical axes resulting in better suppression of magnetic field radiation. Finally, this system was applied to industrial spindles, and the normal and abnormal operation information of spindles was successfully and wirelessly monitored. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

GIRP: Energy-Efficient QoS-Oriented Microservice Resource Provisioning via Multi-Objective Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning

Microservice architecture has revolutionized web service development by facilitating loosely coupled and independently developable components distributed as containers or virtual machines. While existing studies emphasize end-to-end latency, this paper investigates energy-efficient quality-of-service (QoS)-oriented microservice provisioning, focusing on both QoS satisfaction and power consumption (PC) conservation. We propose the Green and Intelligent Resource Provision (GIRP) architecture, integrating a data-driven energy-latency-aware resource allocation and scheduling manager to balance latency and PC. To reconcile the trade-offs involved, a dual-objective optimization problem is formulated to minimize latency and energy use by selecting proper servers, allocating CPU cores, and determining service replicas. To address challenges with discrete variables, dual objectives, and implicit mappings, we leverage a model-free deep deterministic policy gradient-based reinforcement learning algorithm. specifically, we develop a multi-task agent via the Multi-gate Mixture-of-Experts model to simultaneously make two separate actions regarding CPU core numbers and service replica numbers, followed by a single-task agent to determine service scheduling. Extensive experiments on the DeathStarBenchmark testbed validate GIRP's effectiveness, demonstrating approximately 52% resource savings and a 43% reduction in PC compared to leading methods like Sinan, Firm, and heuristic-based algorithms. These results highlight GIRP's capability to optimize microservice orchestration by balancing end-to-end latency and power efficiency. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.

Chemical signals contained in hydrothermal fluid provide the clues to infer the location of hydrothermal vent by autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). A partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is introduced to model the searching area and observation behavior in non-buoyant plume height. A POMDP-based belief state estimation method is introduced to maintain source-likelihood mapping. A real-time simulation platform is built to verify the source-likelihood mapping approach which provides a novel solution to effectively infer the vent location. The influences of memory length of flow sensor information on mapping is studied, and the length is not recommended to be very long. © 2022 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Towards Fast and Accurate Federated Learning with non-IID Data for Cloud-Based IoT applications

As a promising method of central model training on decentralized device data while securing user privacy, Federated Learning (FL) is becoming popular in Internet of Things (IoT) design. However, when the data collected by IoT devices are highly skewed in a non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) manner, the accuracy of vanilla FL method cannot be guaranteed. Although there exist various solutions that try to address the bottleneck of FL with non-IID data, most of them suffer from extra intolerable communication overhead and low model accuracy. To enable fast and accurate FL, this paper proposes a novel data-based device grouping approach that can effectively reduce the disadvantages of weight divergence during the training of non-IID data. However, since our grouping method is based on the similarity of extracted feature maps from IoT devices, it may incur additional risks of privacy exposure. To solve this problem, we propose an improved version by exploiting similarity information using the Locality-Sensitive Hashing (LSH) algorithm without exposing extracted feature maps. Comprehensive experimental results on well-known benchmarks show that our approach can not only accelerate the convergence rate, but also improve the prediction accuracy for FL with non-IID data. Efficient Federated Learning for AIoT applications Using Knowledge Distillation

As a promising distributed machine learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) trains a central model with decentralized data without compromising user privacy, which makes it widely used by Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things (AIoT) applications. However, the traditional FL suffers from model inaccuracy, since it trains local models only using hard labels of data while useful information of incorrect predictions with small probabilities is ignored. Although various solutions try to tackle the bottleneck of the traditional FL, most of them introduce significant communication overhead, making the deployment of large-scale AIoT devices a great challenge. To address the above problem, this paper presents a novel Distillation-based Federated Learning (DFL) method that enables efficient and accurate FL for AIoT applications. By using Knowledge Distillation (KD), in each round of FL training, our approach uploads both the soft targets and local model gradients to the cloud server for aggregation, where the aggregation results are then dispatched to AIoT devices for the next round of local training. During the DFL local training, in addition to hard labels, the model predictions approximate soft targets, which can improve model accuracy by leveraging the knowledge of soft targets. To further improve our DFL model performance, we design a dynamic adjustment strategy of loss function weights for tuning the ratio of KD and FL, which can maximize the synergy between soft targets and hard labels. Comprehensive experimental results on well-known benchmarks show that our approach can significantly improve the model accuracy of FL without introducing significant communication overhead. Low-symmetry Penta-PdPSe with intrinsic in-plane anisotropy synthesized successfully [P. Li et al., Adv. Mater., 2102541 (2021)]. Motivated by this experimental discovery, we investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of PdPSe monolayer via density functional theory calculations. The phonon dispersion, molecular dynamics simulation, the cohesive energy mechanical properties of the penta-PdPSe monolayer is verified to confirm its stability. The phonon spectrum represents a striking gap between the high-frequency and the low-frequency optical branches and an out-of-plane flexure mode with a quadratic dispersion in the long-wavelength limit. The Poisson’s ratio indicates that penta-PdPSe is a brittle monolayer. The pendaPdPSe monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with bandgap of 1.40 (2.07) eV using PBE (HSE06) functional. Optical properties simulation suggests that PdPSe is capable of absorbing a substantial range of visible to ultraviolet light. Band alignment analysis also reveals the compatibility of PdPSe for water splitting photocatalysis application. By combining the electrical and thermal transport properties of PdPSe, we show that a high PF is achievable at room temperature, thus making PdPSe a candidate material for thermoelectric application. Our findings reveal the strong potential of penta-PdPSe monolayer for a wide array of applications, including optoelectronic, water splitting and thermoelectric device applications. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, the effect of wind airflow over a monocrystalline photovoltaic panel (PV) was examined in relation to general velocity and temperature contours. The analysis was obtained using the developed numerical CFD model that was validated by available experimental results. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.5 m/s up to 4.0 m/s and the gained results are specified for different longitudinal cross-sections of the PV panel. The obtained results gave detailed insight into velocity profiles and temperature stratification over the PV panel surface, where specific discovered effects were addressed. The provided research results in this paper are important for the development of a novel or improved existing cooling techniques for PV panels where the final effect is a targeted increase in average PV panel efficiency. © 2017 Univeristy of Split, FESB.

Driven by worldwide demands for renewable energy source, photovoltaic (PV) inverters, which are the most important part for energy conversion, have seen a considerable amount of innovations in recent years. The trends for PV inverters are toward high efficiency, high reliability, low ground leakage current, low-output ac-current distortion, and reactive power capability. This paper provides an efficiency optimized design of an Auxiliary Resonant Snubber with Coupled-Magnetic Reset Zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter for PV application. The main device is Power MOSFETs, which have low conduction loss and could achieve ZVS in all load condition. The auxiliary devices are low current, low cost IGBTs and Diodes, which could achieve zero-current switching (ZCS). To achieve high efficiency, resonant circuit is analyzed to optimally design the resonant components, which is based on the guarantee of full range ZVS, gating delay-time design, and lower power loss in auxiliary circuit. The power loss model is also analyzed to select suitable power device and further improve the efficiency. At last, experiment results of a 5kW single phase inverter in PV system was presented, which has more than 99% CEC efficiency and work in full load condition without cooling fan. Besides, reactive power capability is also demonstrated.

SRAM-based Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are vulnerable to Single Event Upsets (SEUs). We show that a large portion (40%-60% for the circuits in our experiments) of the total used LUT configuration bits are don't care bits, and propose to decide the logic values of don't care bits such that soft errors are reduced. Our approaches are efficient and do not change LUT level placement and routing. Therefore, they are suitable for design closure. For the ten largest combinational MCNC benchmark circuits mapped for 6-LUTs, our approaches obtain 20% chip level Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) improvements, compared to the baseline mapped by Berkeley ABC mapper. They obtain 3× more chiplevel MTTF improvements and are 128× faster when compared to the existing best in-place IPD algorithm. © 2011 IEEE.
