Fast Sparse Grid Operations Using the Unidirectional Principle: A Generalized and Unified Framework 1

Sparse grids enable accurate function approximation in higher-dimensional settings with a moderate number of grid points. In this paper, we introduce generalized versions of various efficient sparse grid algorithms in a unified notation: For local basis functions, transformations between function values at grid points and interpolation coefficients can be efficiently realized using the well-known unidirectional principle (Balder and Zenger, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 17(3):631–646, May 1996;Bungartz, Finite Elements of Higher Order on Sparse Grids, Universität München, Aachen, November 1998). For general basis functions without spatial adaptivity, Avila and Carrington show in (The Journal of Chemical Physics, 143(21):214108, 2015) and follow-up work that the unidirectional principle can instead be applied to an equivalent incremental basis, and we show that a second application of the unidirectional principle can be used to compute interpolation coefficients for the original, non-incremental basis. Our Open Source implementation for the latter case is able to compute interpolation coefficients for up to 20 million sparse grid points in one second on a single CPU core. Science gateways have been widely utilized by a large number of user communities to simplify access to complex distributed computing infrastructures. While science gateways are still becoming increasingly popular and the number of user communities is growing, the fast and efficient creation of new science gateways and the flexibility to deploy these gateways on-demand on heterogeneous computational resources, remain a challenge. Additionally, the increase in the number of users, especially with very different backgrounds, requires intuitive embedded e-learning tools that support all stakeholders to find related learning material and to guide the learning process. This paper introduces a novel science gateway framework that addresses these challenges. The framework supports the creation, publication, selection, and deployment of cloud-based reference architectures that can be automatically instantiated and executed even by nontechnical users. The framework also incorporates a knowledge repository exchange and learning module that provides embedded e-learning support. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution, two scientific case studies are presented based on the requirements of the plasmasphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere research communities. © 2022 The Authors. The consolidation of multiple tenants onto a single RDBMS instance turned out to be benefical with respect to resource utilization and scalability. The consolidation implies that multiple tenants share the physical resources available for the RDBMS instance. If the available resources tend to get insufficient to meet the SLAs agreed with the tenants, migration of a tenant's database from one RDBMS instance to another is compelling. Highly available services demand for live migration techniques that come with minimal service interruption and low performance impact. This paper meets the demand for live migration techniques by contributing ProRea. ProRea is a live database migration approach designed for multi-tenant RDBMS that run OLTP workloads under snapshot isolation. ProRea extends concepts of existing live database migration approaches to accomplish minimal service interruption, high efficiency and very low migration overhead. Measurements of a prototypical ProRea implementation underpin its good performance. © 2013 ACM.

To implement Software as a Service, the consolidation of multiple tenants into a single schema instance of a RDBMS and, thus, into a single, shared B-tree index is a common approach. It is crucial to understand the impact of this approach with respect to query processing performance to decide in which cases a shared B-tree is beneficial as opposed to using a private B-tree index for each tenant. This paper contributes to the question when consolidating tenants into a shared B-tree index is beneficial. From two approaches to a shared B-tree index, we state the Partitioned B-tree as generally applicable approach. We analytically compare a single Partitioned B-tree with many private B-trees, assuming uniformly random insertion of keys. Finally, we discuss our analytical results from a practical perspective.

Software as a Service (SaaS) facilitates acquiring a huge number of small tenants by providing low service fees. To achieve low service fees, it is essential to reduce costs per tenant. For this, consolidating multiple tenants onto a single relational schema instance turned out beneficial because of low overheads per tenant and scalable manageability. This approach implements data isolation between tenants, per-tenant schema extension and further tenant-centric data management features in application logic. This is complex, disables some optimization opportunities in the RDBMS and represents a conceptual misstep with Separation of Concerns in mind. Therefore, we contribute first features of a RDBMS to support tenant-aware data management natively. We introduce tenants as first-class database objects and propose the concept of a tenant context to isolate a tenant from other tenants. We present a schema inheritance concept that allows sharing a core application schema among tenants while enabling schema extensions per tenant. Finally, we evaluate a preliminary implementation of our approach.

For implementing Software as a Service (SaaS) with RDBMS, Shared Table that consolidates multiple tenants onto one relational schema turned out beneficial because of low overheads per tenant and scalable manageability. The standard storage concept of Shared Table intermingles tuples of multiple tenants within table pages and index pages. This concept lacks support for tenant-oriented administrative operations and loses fast sequential access to all tuples of a tenant. An alternative storage concept, that gets rid of these issues, partitions table storage by tenant. To judge the applicability of this concept, it is compelling to understand its performance characteristics with respect to query processing. We contribute a comparative performance study between the standard storage concept of Shared Table and tenant-partitioned table storage with non-partitioned global indexes. For this purpose, we additionally contribute a tenant-aware database benchmark. Finally, we conclude that both approaches have their strengths with respect to query processing performance.

To use software by accessing it across the Internet instead of installing and using it on-premises becomes more and more common. This model is called Software as a Service. It allows the customers to concentrate on their core business and to save money due to less operational costs. Hence, many software vendors are nowadays in need to modernize their existing application for a SaaS offering to catch up with the market. In doing so, the vendor can pursue different approaches, especially considering how to enable the application for multi-tenancy that constitutes a key factor for a higher profit by leveraging economies of scale. We introduce three engineering approaches to modernize a data-intensive enterprise application for a multi-tenant SaaS offering: Reuse, Recycle, and Redesign. Further, we identify different engineering issues and isolation issues between tenants with respect to the approach Recycle. Finally, we contribute an initial strategy for recycling data-intensive enterprise applications.

The world of spatial data is split into individual data source islands that have different thematic or spatial focuses. When attempting to integrate those data sources, severe challenges arise, since for most GIS application domains a spatial integration schema does not exist. This is also true for the newly emerging domain of mobile, context-aware applications. Since the users of these systems are mobile, transborder access to spatial data or context models is crucial for global deployment. The basis for this work is the Nexus Augmented World Schema, a conceptual schema that serves as an integration standard for autonomous spatial context servers. This paper analyzes some major spatial data standards, especially with respect to the requirements of a spatial integration schema for context-aware applications and illustrates the Nexus approach.
