The effect of using crumb rubber on fatigue and rutting lives in flexible pavement

This research is performed to analyze effect of using crumb rubber (CR) on the overlay design of Palembang City – Betung roads. Analysis of existing road conditions using the AASHTO 1993. This analysis based on deflection data using the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). While, the overlay design analysis using CIRCLY 7.0 software to determine horizontal tensile strain (εh) for fatigue live and vertical compressive strain (εv) for rutting live parameters. The result showed that using CR can increase fatigue live into 66 % and rutting lives into 22 % for contribute pavement performance. To ensure the effect of CR in pavement's performance, further research must be taken to find out if there are other effects that support.

Asphalt concrete as a wear layer, known as the Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC) with a minimum nominal thickness of 4.0 cm. However, the use of AC-WC layers in the pavement structure is often faced with problems of performance degradation due to the development of various types of damage during the service life one of them is a result of the effect of water. In general, water has a negative effect on road pavement construction. Standing water can be caused by high rainfall, poor drainage systems, high groundwater levels, and water runoff. This research aims to look at the performance of the physical and mechanical properties of testing Marshall characteristics on a mixture of asphalt pen 60/70 wear layer (AC-WC) on the duration of water immersion from three different types of water. The specimen was carried out immersion testing from three types of water, namely clean water, brown flood water and black air with 30 minute immersion standards with variations of 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 30 days. The study outcomes shows several conclusions: (1) From the Marshall test results the physical properties obtained showed that the longer the immersion time the greater the VIM value obtained, the increase occurred in the type of brown flood water with the lowest Ph. Whereas the value of VFB in brown flood water immersion decreased the most as the duration of the immersion; (2) The mechanical properties of the Marshall test results are stability values still meet the standards, while for the value of melt and MQ black flood water immersion is the most influential on the asphalt mixture.

The performance of the modified asphalt concrete pavement structure is done because of the increasing traffic load that occurs along with population growth. The study is needed to review the pavement structure whether it is still able to withstand the load or not at all. An Evaluation was carried out using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) field data to obtain deflection data. Laboratory testing of UMATTA used modified asphalt mixture using Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) type plastic bottle waste to obtain the relative strength coefficient value as an application combined with secondary data from average daily traffic data on the roads of the Batas Medan City– Batas Lubuk Pakam City. Structural analysis shows that the entire segment requires an added layer with the thickness that is different due to the segmentation performed. In this study to maintain the required service level, namely SCI>1, the pavement must receive periodic maintenance and routine maintenance. elated to using asphalt modification using PET will produce a lower pavement thickness of 11 cm compared to the pavement thickness by the 2017 Pavement Design Manual standard of 16 cm.

The performance of composite steel in the elements of a post-fire steel bridge

The steel structure is commonly acknowledged able to return to its original strength condition. It is yet unknown whether composite structure may return to its initial condition. Test specimen on the present study consists of 8 units, each of them divided into four stud-connector bold (SP) composites beams and four UNP connector (SF) composite beams. Each of the specimen has control value by SP/020 and SF/020, and other six specimens with combustion of SP/400, SP/550, SP/700 and SF/400, SF/500, SF/700, within condition of point load for about 12 kN. The study intends to investigate composite girder of post-fire bridge element towards duration and heat temperature factors and effect of beam performance towards stud-connector and UNP connector composites. The results draw several conclusions; The process of composite combustion shows that the failure on composite steel beam specimen is due to the load, burning duration and temperature which results in residual deflection. Deflection test reveals the effect of temperature, load, and duration do not give significant impact to load capacity of post-combustion beam structure.

Study of stabilized soil clay soil characteristics using vulcanic ash and tailing as subgrade layers

Soft clay is soil that need microscopic to sub microscopic size originating from the chemical weathering of rock compilers. Clay soil is very hard in a dry state and is plastic at moderate water content. At higher water contents the clay soil is sticky (cohesive) and very soft. Soil stabilization is an effort to improve the quality of the soil by using certain materials to increase soil strength. Soil stabilization is the process of mixing soil with certain materials to improve the technical properties of the soil and is an attempt to change or improve the technical properties of the soil to meet certain technical requirements of the soil carrying capacity. This research is an experimental study to determine the carrying capacity of clay soil stability using volcanic ash deposits and tailings instead of cement. The research variables are volcanic ash deposits which is locked of 8% and tailings with the variation of 4%, 5%, 6% and ripening for 3 days, 7 days and 14 days. The benefits of this experimental study are expected to get the carrying capacity of the soil from stabilized soil greater than the carrying capacity of the original soil by the unconfined compression test (UCS).

Comparative study of asphalt concrete characteristic between ideal gradation and laboratory tested gradation with crumb rubber

Modifying asphalt concrete with using Crumb Rubber (CR) can provide environmental benefits. The method used in this study is an experimental laboratory with Mashall machine. The tests used two types of gradation, namely the gradations of Ideal and Laboratory Test. CR used in a mixture with a dry process method to replacement 0%, 5%, 15% and 20% of the weight aggregate at fraction No. 30 (0.6 mm). The results showed that the Ideal gradation mixture has a better characteristic than the mixture of laboratory tested gradations. Ideal gradations can increased stability into 10% from Laboratory Test gradations for mixture without CR. Addition of CR contect in AC mixture did not significantly effect for the characteristics. To ensure the effect of CR in mixture, further test must be taken.

The Effect of EPS Addition to Soil Stabilized with Fly Ash as Lightweight Fill Materials for Embankment Construction

Design and construction of road embankment presents several challenges, including the possibility of bearing capacity failure, large total settlement, differential settlement, and slope instability, which may result from the weight of the embankment construction itself, and/or weak foundation. A number of techniques have been developed and can be used to overcome these problems, one of them is by modifying the weight of the embankment itself with the use of lightweight materials, such as soil-EPS mixture. The use of soil-EPS mixture as lightweight material provides several advantages, among which can achieve the same volume or elevation requirement with a significantly lighter weight compared to ordinary materials, improving slope stability, embankment over high compressibility soil, and to reduce soil pressure to soil retaining structures, abutment or bridge pillar. Fly ash also added to act as binder to increase shear strength of mixture. The result of the compaction test shows that the addition of a small amount of EPS to the mixture can significantly reduce the maximum dry density of the mixture. Triaxial UU and UCS test results show a reduction in mixture strength as EPS contents increase, but due to the presence of fly ash increases the strength of mixture as the number of day increases, so that the use of lightweight materials has the potential to be one of soil improvement solutions.

In this work the inverse problem of identification of structural stiffness coefficients of a damped spring-mass system is tackled. The problem is solved by using different versions of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) metaheuristic solely or coupled with the Hooke-Jeeves (HJ) local search algorithm. The evaluated versions of ACO are based on a discretization procedure to deal with the continuous domain design variables together with different pheromone evaporation and deposit strategies and also on the frequency of calling the local search algorithm. The damage estimation is evaluated using noiseless and noisy synthetic experimental data assuming a damage configuration throughout the structure. The reported results show the hybrid method as the best choice when both rank-based pheromone deposit and a new heuristic information based on the search history are used.

This paper presents the results of tests done on concrete beams reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) longitudinal bars and GFRP stirrups. The main test variables were the size, the amount, and the arrangement of longitudinal reinforcement as well as the size and spacing of closed loop stirrups. Six beams are divided into two series defined by stirrup spacing, or three pairs defined by longitudinal bar arrangement. The results indicate that the specimens with no stirrups failed in shear-tension while the beams with stirrups failed in shear-compression showing deep beam behaviour. The results were compared to predictions from several methods, namely a novel Indeterminate Strut-and-Tie (1ST) method formulated specifically for use with brittle reinforcements, as well as the shear models of the ACI 440.1R-06 guidelines, the CSA S806-12 standard, and theNehdi et al. (2007) method. The 1ST method produced the best predictions followed by the method of Nehdi et al. Due to the complexity of contemporary practice, top-tier structural engineering firms hold the master's degree as the minimum level of education for new hires. In addition, the American Society of civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends a master's degree or the equivalent of 30 credits beyond a bachelor's degree as part of the minimum body of knowledge for licensed professional engineers. Finally, students whose end goal is a career in professional practice have indicated a preference for graduate programs focused on design knowledge essential for the advancement of structural engineering practice. These needs provided the opportunity for the creation of a new professional master's program in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Launched in summer 2008, the program is led by a full-time professor of practice with industry design experience and guided by an executive advisory board, composed of representatives from all areas of the building design and construction profession. The hallmark of the 30-credit, 10-month program is a 9-credit, 3-course design project sequence in which student teams design a real-world structure from initial concept to final construction documents. An individual project assignment, as well as technical elective courses, allows students to tailor the program to their unique interests and career goals. A laboratory class provides hands-on learning of structural behavior. Interaction with industry leaders through seminars, field trips, and externships provides students ample opportunity to network with professionals and gain an understanding of their chosen industry.
