This paper presents the design and evaluation of a manufacturing route planner for flexible manufacturing systems. The aim of the planner is to find the optimal manufacturing routes for jobs using well-designed cost functions. This route planner, which is based on heuristic [A*] strategy, has been designed to work under dynamic arrival pattern environment. The proposed algorithm consists of two level;the cell level, which controls the jobs flow between cells, and the machine level which controls the jobs flow between the machines inside the cells selected at first level. The solutions of the route planner are contained in a dynamic knowledge base that passes information to the sequencing and monitoring stage. The suggested model has also the capability to detect and response with suitable alternation for the damaged elements in the manufacturing system. To improve the performance of the planner, the design is organized into distributed programming media using the concurrent features of the modula-2 programming language. Finally, two case studies are considered to illustrate the functionality of the proposed algorithm.

A computer technique for simulating digital control systems is presented. it is conceived with recursion formulas to describe the interconnected elements of the system, those of the digital and the continuous elements, in a unified fashion. The technique permitted experimentation with different combinations of system parameters and system configurations. The efficiency of the techniques suggest its suitability for a rational engineering design of a control system before implementation.

WebCODS targets this need: it is a web-based system that supports dynamic component composition over the web. This article discusses the component composition aspects of WebCODS. Specific attention is devoted to the model of composition, the inter-connection between components, and the implementation strategy. An example is presented.

Work‐zone delay is very costly to the movement of goods and people. it is increasingly problematic for logistics management if the travel time or delay information cannot be estimated in an accurate way. This paper describes a study to investigate the effects of work zones, enhance computer‐based capability to estimate the associated work‐zone delays, assess the interrelationship of significant factors that affect work‐zone delays and develop a user‐friendly tool to assist transportation operations and logistics planning. A computerized information system, called lane‐occupancy‐delay estimation system (LODES), is developed to assess work‐zone delays that may affect short‐ or long‐term logistic activities. The results from trials and their implications are discussed and, finally, areas of further research are proposed.
