We prove that every graph has a spectral sparsifier with a number of edges linear in its number of vertices. As linear-sized spectral sparsifiers of complete graphs are expanders, our sparsifiers of arbitrary graphs can be viewed as generalizations of expander graphs. In particular, we prove that for every d > 1 and every undirected, weighted graph G = (V, E,w) on n vertices, there exists a weighted graph H = (V, F, w˜) with at most d(n - 1)] edges such that for every x ∈ v, xT LGx ≤ xT LHx ≤ (d+1+2√d/d+1+2√d)· x T Lgx, where LG and LH are the Laplacian matrices of G and H, respectively. Thus, H approximates G spectrally at least as well as a Ramanujan expander with dn/2 edges approximates the complete graph. Shape from shading is a classical inverse problem in computer vision. We introduce a novel mathematical formulation for calculating local surface shape based on covariant derivatives, rather than the customary integral minimization or P.D.E approaches. Motivated by neurobiology, we introduce the shading flow field (the tangent map to the image isophotes) between the image and the surface levels. Just as in the perceptual organization of texture, we use the parallel transport of our shading flow field to move the isophote field at different points on the unknown surface to a single point, amassing restrictions on our surface curvatures. Under simplifying assumptions we solve exactly for the light source/surface pairs needed for a local image patch to have a given shading flow. The magnitude of the brightness gradient then restricts this family to a single light source and surface estimate pair, up to the concave/convex ambiguity and an additional elliptical/saddle ambiguity. Example calculations illustrate our approach.

Design of digital circuits and systems are topics covered in undergraduate courses on computer science, computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Simple processor architectures are used as example of digital systems to apply and integrate the concepts studied in these courses. In this paper, we discuss the use of a simple processor named BIP (Basic Instruction-set Processor) in courses on digital circuits and systems design. BIP is distinguished from similar processors because it was developed by applying a multidisciplinary approach in order to allow its use in introductory courses on computer programming and in several other courses in the computer science area.

Heart wall myofibers wind as helices around the ventricles, strengthening them in a manner analogous to the reinforcement of concrete cylindrical columns by spiral steel cables [Richart FE, et al. (1929) Univ of Illinois, Eng Exp Stn Bull 190]. A multitude of such fibers, arranged smoothly and regularly, contract and relax as an integrated functional unit as the heart beats. To orchestrate this motion, fiber tangling must be avoided and pumping should be efficient. Current models of myofiber orientation across the heart wall suggest groupings into sheets or bands, but the precise geometry of bundles of myofibers is unknown. Here we show that this arrangement takes the form of a special minimal surface, the generalized helicoid [Blair DE, Vanstone JR (1978) Minimal Submanifolds and Geodesics 13-16], closing the gap between individual myofibers and their collective wall structure. The model holds across species, with a smooth variation in its three curvature parameters within the myocardial wall providing tight fits to diffusion magnetic resonance images from the rat, the dog, and the human. Mathematically it explains how myofibers are bundled in the heart wall while economizing fiber length and optimizing ventricular ejection volume as they contract. The generalized helicoid provides a unique foundation for analyzing the fibrous composite of the heart wall and should therefore find applications in heart tissue engineering and in the study of heart muscle diseases. In novel learning environments, learning systems not only are able to get environmental information through sensing technology to provide adaptive learning resources and information to students, but also help students to conduct interactions with learning communities. In this study, the development potential of digital archives resource into outdoor environmental education is focused with mobile learning-based educational theory. It makes the learner learn the essence of environmental education, in order to appreciate the valuable resources of nature paid to understand the sustainable necessary of ecological coexistence, thus promote the human treasure of natural resources. To verify the feasibility of our approach, the grade students participate the cooperative learning activity. The experimental results show that the effect of mobile community interactive learning is better than the general outdoor learning methods and the cooperative learning theory can improve the efficiency of learners' knowledge effectively. © 2012 IEEE.

Context-Aware Computing aims at making computing systems able to capture context information and to adapt to it, providing context-related services and information to users. Context is any information used to characterize in some sense a person, object, or place of interest for a given user or application. Initial definitions of context-aware computing date from twenty years ago, but until now it was not yet fully made available to end users. This paper proposes a generic model of a context manager for general-purpose operating systems, alongside with its implementation and first evaluation results. This model includes methods for building, storing, and managing contexts, and an API to make such information available to applications and users.

Accordingly with the World Health Organization, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases and one of the leading causes of the mortality in the world. In such cases we need more than patient engagement to help to control of the disease, community and health organizations support is also desirable. These roles must support the patients' self-management activities, making them feel confident and motivated. This support can be accomplished by ubiquitous computing. The ubiquitous computing gives conditions to help chronic diseases patients in the management of their activities, offering support to them anytime, anywhere. In this context, this article presents U'Ductor, a model for supporting ubiquitous chronic care management, whose goal is to help the integration between patient and community resources. The U'Ductor gives a step forward in relation to the studied related works by integrating patients, community resources and community members. Those features were not completely explored in the studied works in the way we employ in U'Ductor. An implementation of the model was evaluated by a chronic patient, which gave a positive feedback about it.

Social networks provide a new way of communication that still preserves our human social interaction. Due to the widespread use of mobile devices, people tend to use their smartphone or tablet as the main way to make that interaction. Furthermore, applications developed to these devices are fostering the use of contextual information, such as the location of the user. In this way, this article proposes Mingle, a model for a spontaneous social network targeted at mobile devices. In our proposal, the social network is spontaneous, i.e. involves only people that are physically present in a specific location. Besides presenting the model, we show a developed prototype using Android-based devices. We evaluated Mingle employing two strategies, a usage case and a performance evaluation. The results were encouraging and show the potential of deploying Mingle in real situations.
