The mobile games market has grown in relevancy compared to traditional gaming platforms. The standard architecture for these games requires the processing of game logic and graphics using the device's own hardware. Alternatively, cloud based architectures for remote gaming on smartphones present high game input delay at a high cost for the service provider. This poses a limitation to the variety and complexity of games that target these platforms as well as constraining user QoE. To address that limitation, this work proposes the Gaming On The Edge (GOTE) architecture, that aims to enable complex games to be played on smartphone devices while leveraging edge computing infrastructure into graphics processing and content distribution systems. A GOTE architecture's proof of concept is developed and tested using WebRTC with an RTP streaming pipeline that exploits NVENC for achieving low latency video encoding. Experimental results show that GOTE architecture is a viable alternative to cloud based remote gaming on smartphones at the advantage of lowering latency of video and game input. Monitoring the degradation of induction motors is an essential concern for industries, especially when there are high costs related to maintenance and their stops. Nowadays, there are many non-invasive ways to monitor the health status of induction motors, including sensors to measure temperature, magnetic field, vibration, current, and power. However, installing these sensors may not be a simple task since intrusive procedures such as engine disassembling, wire separation, and engine interruption are commonly observed. Thus, we propose MUCLA (Multiphase Clamp and Tracking - patent pending) as a new device and methodology for monitoring motor degradation by analyzing its stator current. MUCLA introduces a non-invasive current sensors array on a proposed clamp in the hardware perspective, while a spectral tracking methodology refers to our novelty in the software viewpoint. For end-users, the main MUCLA contribution relies on the combination of the simplicity of installation and the possibility of using the proposed device even when considering Variable-Frequency Drive powered engines. The results obtained with both simulation and practical tests show encouraging results over different input workloads and emulated degradation. Compared to the current initiatives, we can classify MUCLA as a better solution for industrial plants in terms of installation time, installation complexity, and cost. © 2021 The Authors

Protein Structure Prediction (PSP) problem is an open problem in bioinformatics and, as the problem scales, complexity and processing time increases. In this way, robust methods and massively parallel architectures are required. This paper presents a GPU-based hybrid algorithm, named cuHjDE, to handle the 2D-AB off-lattice PSP problem. The cuHjDE is composed of the jDE algorithm and the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. An important feature present in the cuHjDE algorithm is the use of a crowding mechanism to avoid premature convergence promoting diversification in the search space. The proposed algorithm is compared with four state-of-the-art algorithms in both artificial and real proteins. Also, the impact of using GPU is analyzed. Experimental results point out that the proposed approach is competitive in artificial sequences and achieved new best results for all real sequence proteins. © 2019 IEEE.

This study introduces the Quantum-Train Quantum Fast Weight programmer (QT-QFWP) framework, enabling efficient and scalable programming of variational quantum circuits (VQCs) through quantum-driven parameter updates for the classical slow programmer controlling the fast programmer VQC. By optimizing quantum and classical parameter management, QT-QFWP significantly reduces parameters (by 70–90%) compared to Quantum Long Short-Term Memory (QLSTM) and Quantum Fast Weight programmer (QFWP) while maintaining accuracy. Benchmarking on time-series tasks—including Damped Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM), NARMA5, and Simulated Gravitational Waves (GW)—demonstrates superior efficiency and predictive accuracy. QT-QFWP is particularly advantageous for near-term quantum systems, addressing qubit and gate fidelity constraints, enhancing VQC deployment in time-sensitive applications, and expanding quantum computing’s role in machine learning.

Elasticity is one of the most known capabilities related to cloud computing, being largely deployed using thresholds. In this way, limits are used to drive resource mangement actions, leading to the following problem statements: How can cloud users set the threshold values to enable elasticity in their cloud applications? And what is the impact of the application's load pattern in the elasticity? This article answers these questions for iterative high performance computing applications, showing the impact of both thresholds and load patterns on application performance and resource consumption. To accomplish this, we developed a reactive and PaaS-based elasticity model called AutoElastic and employed it over a private cloud to execute a numerical integration application. Here, we are presenting an analysis of best practices and possible optimizations regarding the elasticity and HPC pair. Considering the results, we observed that the upper threshold influences the application time more than the lower one. © 2015 IEEE.

Clocking represents the manner in which companies register employee data;particularly, data related to entrances to and departures from the company. Being normally implemented with wireless cards or by hand, this procedure can implies on large queues, reducing the emloyee productivity, besides being sensitive to longer complications (when the employee forget to register the clocking, for example). In this context, we developed a model named ACID (Automatic Clocking and Idleness Detection) to bring benefits for both administrators and employees through the use of wireless sensors. Besides eliminating queues, it is possible to analyze those employees that are away from their own places for more than a particular threshold. In addition, the model is also pertinent to enhance decision support when promotions take place. We developed a prototype that was evaluated through simulation, taking into account the architectural plant and the employees behavior of five real Brazilian companies. The results reveals the benefits of using IDAC both at the owner (control and productivity) and employees (the clocking actions occurs automatically) levels. © 2016 IEEE.

Digital road maps have gained fundamental role in population's daily life, so they need to be accurate and up-to-date. A viable solution is to generate maps by processing GPS data. However, one of the most challenging tasks regarding this approach is how to extract road centerlines from the cloud of georeferenced GPS points. The literature presents various methods that do it, but none have been found that is prepared for the continuous update of the map and refinement of its roads' accuracy. In this context, the objective of this work is to propose a method to identify road centerlines using an evolutive algorithm in order to generate and update road maps. This work uses as source of data GPS traces collected by smartphones. Although suitable to obtain a large amount of georeferenced data, these devices bring the additional problem of identifying the transport vehicle used along each trace. Preliminary results indicate that the method's performance is satisfactory, with an average variation of 2.95 meters in relation to satellite images.

This paper aims to identify and analyze recommender systems developed for the health area, available in mobile applications. Therefore, literature was reviewed systematically from ACM, IEEE, Springer and Science Direct databases. 1006 studies were found, eight of which met the eligibility criteria. From the chosen studies, only one was not applied to the areas of nutrition and physical activity. The recommender techniques adopted were Collaborative Filtering and Content-based Filtering. The main mobile device identified was the Smartphone and the Operating System was Android. After analyzing the results, it was possible to realize that, although they are widely used in ecommerce, recommendation systems do not have many mobile healthcare applications, and the existing ones are recent. © 2017 AISTI.

As a result of rural and suburban migration to the cities, urban life has become a significant challenge for citizens and mayors, imposing a huge concern in the sustainable use of resources like energy, water, transportation and housing. Smart cities are the biggest bet to address these challenges efficiently through a real-time monitoring approach which aims to assist in intelligent planning and sustainable urban development. However, to accomplish this monitoring efficiently and to enable the sustainable use of resources, it is necessary an integration between citizens, city devices and the platform where the data is stored and processed. In this context, we are proposing the 3LES model (3 Levels of Energy Saving for Smart Cities), a model that combines data from citizens, city devices and nodes from the processing plataform to offer a multilevel energy saving proposal. 3LES must act transparently without affecting the quality of the services already offered in the city. This paper presents the components of management and monitoring of power consumption at various levels, as well as a model that monitors the energy consumption of elastic cloud applications. The results are promising, with a model that allows the estimation of the energy consumption of elastic applications based on CPU and memory traces with an average and median precision of 97.15% and 97.72%. In addition, we obtained a reduction of more than 90% in the energy spent in public lighting in the city of Rome when analyzing the citizens' location. © 2016 IEEE.
