Elasticity is one of the most known capabilities related to cloud computing, being largely deployed using thresholds. In this way, limits are used to drive resource mangement actions, leading to the following problem statements: How can cloud users set the threshold values to enable elasticity in their cloud applications? And what is the impact of the application's load pattern in the elasticity? This article answers these questions for iterative high performance computing applications, showing the impact of both thresholds and load patterns on application performance and resource consumption. To accomplish this, we developed a reactive and PaaS-based elasticity model called AutoElastic and employed it over a private cloud to execute a numerical integration application. Here, we are presenting an analysis of best practices and possible optimizations regarding the elasticity and HPC pair. Considering the results, we observed that the upper threshold influences the application time more than the lower one. © 2015 IEEE.

As a result of rural and suburban migration to the cities, urban life has become a significant challenge for citizens and mayors, imposing a huge concern in the sustainable use of resources like energy, water, transportation and housing. Smart cities are the biggest bet to address these challenges efficiently through a real-time monitoring approach which aims to assist in intelligent planning and sustainable urban development. However, to accomplish this monitoring efficiently and to enable the sustainable use of resources, it is necessary an integration between citizens, city devices and the platform where the data is stored and processed. In this context, we are proposing the 3LES model (3 Levels of Energy Saving for Smart Cities), a model that combines data from citizens, city devices and nodes from the processing plataform to offer a multilevel energy saving proposal. 3LES must act transparently without affecting the quality of the services already offered in the city. This paper presents the components of management and monitoring of power consumption at various levels, as well as a model that monitors the energy consumption of elastic cloud applications. The results are promising, with a model that allows the estimation of the energy consumption of elastic applications based on CPU and memory traces with an average and median precision of 97.15% and 97.72%. In addition, we obtained a reduction of more than 90% in the energy spent in public lighting in the city of Rome when analyzing the citizens' location. © 2016 IEEE.

Clocking represents the manner in which companies register employee data;particularly, data related to entrances to and departures from the company. Being normally implemented with wireless cards or by hand, this procedure can implies on large queues, reducing the emloyee productivity, besides being sensitive to longer complications (when the employee forget to register the clocking, for example). In this context, we developed a model named ACID (Automatic Clocking and Idleness Detection) to bring benefits for both administrators and employees through the use of wireless sensors. Besides eliminating queues, it is possible to analyze those employees that are away from their own places for more than a particular threshold. In addition, the model is also pertinent to enhance decision support when promotions take place. We developed a prototype that was evaluated through simulation, taking into account the architectural plant and the employees behavior of five real Brazilian companies. The results reveals the benefits of using IDAC both at the owner (control and productivity) and employees (the clocking actions occurs automatically) levels. © 2016 IEEE.

The use of recommender systems is widespread in several everyday systems. People are now exposed to different offerings, based on their interests, in order to anticipate decisions. However, in a different way recommender systems for accessibility domain require further studies and researches. In order to provide resources for people with special needs, we developed the Vulcanus, a recommender system designed for people with disabilities, offering access to resources according user's needs. The recommender system approaches concepts from ubiquitous computing, such as user profiles, context awareness, trails management, and similarity analysis. Vulcanus uses two different approaches: resources patterns and categories patterns;where different systems can use it, for example as a Web Service. Vulcanus was evaluated in different scenarios. These scenarios used more than 800 thousands of trails that simulate wheelchair users using resources along six months. The obtained results show that both approaches are able to provide relevant recommendations, providing resources that in fact can support users' needs. © 2015 IEEE.

Spectral Model for Soybean Yield Estimate Using MODIS/EVI Data

Attaining reliable and timely agricultural estimates is very important everywhere, and in Brazil, due to its characteristics, this is especially true. In this study, estimations of crop production were made based on the temporal profiles of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. The objective was to evaluate the coupled model (CM) performance of crop area and crop yield estimates based solely on MODIS/EVI as input data in Rio Grande do Sul State, which is characterized by high variability in seasonal soybean yields, due to different crop development conditions. The resulting production estimates from CM were compared to official agricultural statistics of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Company of Food Supply (CONAB) at different levels from 2000/2001 to 2010/2011 crop years. Results obtained with CM indicate that its application is able to generate timely production estimates for soybean both at municipality and local levels. Validation estimates with CM at State level obtained R2 = 0.95. Combining all cropping years at municipality level, estimates were highly correlated to official statistics from IBGE, with R2 = 0.91 and RMSD = 10,840 tons. Spatially interpolated comparisons of yield maps obtained from the CM estimates and IBGE data also showed visual similarity in their spatial distribution. Local level comparisons were performed and presented R2 = 0.95. Implications of this work point out that time-series analysis of production estimates are able to provide anticipated spatial information prior to the soybean harvest.

The interest in human phenotypes has leveraged interdisciplinary efforts encouraging a better understanding of the broad spectrum of psychological and behavioral disorders. Moreover, the usage of mobile and wearable devices along with unobtrusive computational capabilities provides an extensive amount of information that allows the characterization of phenotypes. This article describes the human phenotype through the lens of computational range and reviews state-of-the-art computational phenotyping. Furthermore, the article discusses computational phenotyping’s extension concerning the combination of intelligent environments and personal mobile devices, addressing technical, managerial, and ethical challenges. This combination reinforces ubiquitous computational capabilities for phenotyping as a facilitator of interdisciplinary information convergence in favor of clinical and biomedical research. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The use of LiDAR and multiples digital images jointly with 3-D reconstruction techniques for creating 3-D models of natural outcrops and surfaces studies have increased dramatically in the last few years. These techniques have provided an enormous amount of data for interpretation by geoscientists. However, these researchers have no available software capable of offering a user experience comparable to the fieldwork. The majority of solutions have considered desktop systems, which presents inherent limitations due to the 2-D characteristics of displays and loss of immersion into the 3-D model, or up until expensive and complex stereoscopic based approaches to improve the 3-D user experience do not offer well suitable solutions. To address these limitations, this paper presents a low-cost completely disruptive solution for processing, visualizing, sharing and directly handling Digital Outcrop Models with the support of a full interpretation toolset, the MOSIS System. The proposed system provides a fully immersive computational environment, capable of teleporting virtually geoscientists to the fieldwork, giving an awareness of being there physically with an extensible toolset for the DOM's interpretation. Besides, desktop, web and mobile versions of MOSIS have been under development and fulfill the lack of tools for digital outcrop modeling. © 2017 IEEE.

In a geological study, an important step is to determine the type of sedimentary rock or its grain size. Such a determination requires accurate analysis in the field or in a laboratory. As the size of the study area grows, this activity can be time consuming and error prone because the number of specialists working under rigid criteria also increases. This paper proposes a novel methodology to classify grain size using unique wavelength reflectance data and artificial neural networks. The results indicate that the proposed method can be reliably used in the field. © 2018 IEEE.

In software development, code autocomplete can be an essential tool in order to accelerate coding. However, many of these tools built into the IDEs are limited to suggesting only methods or arguments, often presenting to the user long lists of irrelevant items. Since innovations introduced by transformer-based models that have reached the state of the art performance in tasks involving natural language processing (NLP), the application of these models also in tasks involving code intelligence, such as code completion, has become a frequent object of study in recent years. In these paper, we present a transformer-based model trained on 1.2 million Java files gathered from top-starred Github repositories. Our evaluation approach was based on measuring the model’s ability to predict the completion of a line, proposing a new metric to measure the applicability of the suggestions that we consider better adapted to the practical reality of the code completion task. With a recently developed Java web project as test set, our experiments showed that in 55.9% of the test cases the model brought at least one suggestion applicable, while the best baseline model presented this in 26.5%. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Computer vision systems allow digital reconstruction of targets by capturing information through remote sensors such as video cameras and scanners. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the capacity and quality of three-dimensional reconstruction of static targets using the ZED stereoscopic camera. For this goal, we took images of several environments and objects with different surfaces, textures, lighting, distances and acquisition speeds. The results were compared with high-density and high precision point clouds obtained from the targets using a Leica Viva TS15 total station. The data were processed in the CloudCompare software to calculate the displacement between the models generated by the camera and the total station. Under certain circumstances, this technology is able to reconstruct three-dimensional objects and environments with an error of a few centimeters. © 2018 IEEE.
