This paper presents a genetic algorithm for resource scheduling in service discovery to MANETs operating in emergency scenarios. The shared resources could be ambulances or support cars. Through an appropriate model for scheduling resources, we aim to attend the greatest number of victims in the affected area. Performance evaluation results on the Network Simulator NS-3 confirm the effectiveness of genetic algorithm for resource scheduling when compared to the A-Star algorithm which is simple heuristic method, that prioritizing paths that seem to be leading closer to the goal.

Fuzzy logic is used in many applications from industrial process control to automotive applications, including consumers trend forecast, aircraft maneuvering control and others. Considering the increased interest in using of multi-rotor aircrafts (usually called drones) for many kinds of applications, it is important to study new methods to improve multi-rotor maneuverability while controlling its stability in a proper way. Controlling the flight of multi-rotors, specially those equipped six rotors, is not a trivial task. When considering the design of such a control systems, traditional approaches such as PD/PID are very difficult to design, in spite of being easily implementable. This work proposes an approach based on multiple interconnected fuzzy controllers, aiming to control the various aspects related to maneuverability of a hexacopter carrying a free payload forming a pendulum. The behavior produced by such a control system has been simulated on a well-known robotics simulation environment and analyzed in terms of flight stability, as well as roll, pitch and yaw movements. The results show the feasibility of the proposed approach in keeping the hexacopter flying in a stable way.

Network configuration, performance, and congestion impact the Quality of Service (QoS) of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). Moreover, LMSs composing modules have different QoS demands for each activity. Upon a network, they compete for resources with applications for social media, streaming, chat, cloud file synchronization, games, among others. Eventually, the network congestion can leave the LMS service unavailable for students and professors. Recently, the popularization of Software Defined Networks (SDN) revolutionized the network management. We propose SDN4Moodle, a toolset to increase the QoS of Moodle services. SDN4Moodle was implemented in conformity to Moodle's plugin guidelines, and it is controlled by internal Moodle events. Each action performed by a Moodle's user is dynamically translated into network forwarding rules, and switches configuration. Our experimental results indicates SDN4Moodle, an open-source system, efficiently achieves flows isolation and bandwidth control on shared networks.

In the quest to engage and motivate users on the use of mobile applications, the gamification concept has been excelling in the market since incorporates game elements in a non-game context. Scoring systems, challenges, competitions and badges, are some of the elements implemented in many fields, such as health, education, ecological awareness, among others. In this context, this study aimed to systematically review available literature to identify gamification strategies used in mobile applications. A search was conducted in ACM, Science Direct and Scopus databases, from March to June 2016. A total of 402 studies were found, 23 of which met the eligibility criteria. The results demonstrated the heterogeneity of gamification elements being used and the impact they caused in the applications, especially as a motivational factor for users. This study provides the basis for future research on gamification methods and emphasizes the importance of this concept to increase engagement and provide enjoyment to users.

The Protein Structure Prediction (PSP) is one of the most challenging problems in Bioinformatics. In computationally terms, the PSP is classified as a NP-complete problem. In this way, metaheuristics became very interesting to find good solutions in a plausible processing time. In this work we propose a distinct Differential Evolution approach that mix different mutation mechanisms (DEcascade) to solve the PSP using the backbone side chain torsion angles representation with the ROSETTA energy function. Four proteins are used in the experiments: 1ZDD, 1CRN, 1ENH and 1AIL. To evaluate the proposed approach, two variations of DEcascade are used and compared with singlemutation mechanisms DE and literature work. Both variations showed competitive results when compared with the literature and better energy values than other DE approaches. Also, the population diversity is monitored during the optimization process showing that the diversity balance is a key feature for good solutions.

For water-cooled stator bar of power generator, leaks of water at the copper strand brazing location will reduce dramatically its insulation resistance. Therefore, the insulation resistance measurement is an important and simple test to perform in the periodic maintenance program. The temperature has an important effect on the insulation resistance. To correctly trend the insulation resistance of the winding, a correction factor has to be applied. This paper describes experimental data performed on both dry and wet epoxy-mica insulation from bars removed from an operating generator. The results are compared with different correction models. They show an important difference of the temperature coefficient between the dry and wet bar.

Inexperienced drivers usually use the most-known paths to move inside the cities, while drivers with a better knowledge of the road network normally taken alternative routes that are shorter, faster or safer. This knowledge about roads usage, when shared with other drivers, could offer more paths options to distribute the traffic load across the city by suggesting alternative routes. However, the problem lies in how to suggest alternative route directions for ordinary drivers considering knowledge gathered from experienced drivers. In order to try to solve this problem, it is proposed an algorithm, named TODS - Trajectory Outlier Detection and Segmentation, to group and segment car road trajectories in standard and alternative routes based on city roads usage in different day times periods. After that, the segmentation results are suggested as driving directions for ordinary drivers. To evaluate the results was performed a qualitative comparison with TRA-SOD algorithm considering the segmentation process. The tests were executed using two trajectories datasets collected by drivers in San Francisco - USA and Joinville - Brazil. The results assessment indicate that TODS is superior to TRA-SOD due to its segmentation characteristics. Besides that, it has been observed that the time period of the day influences how routes are used along the day.

The success of cloud computing technology has leveraged the emergence of a large number of new companies providing cloud computing services. Choosing which cloud providers are the most suitable to attend consumers desired quality of service has become a hard problem. In order to qualify such providers, performance indicators (PIs) are useful tools for systematic and synthesized information collection. Thus, the problem approached in this work is to find the best set of cloud computing providers that satisfies a customer's request, with the least amount of providers and the lowest price. Hence, this work proposes a hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) to address this problem. In experiments, three approaches, using PIs as input, are employed: a simple matching algorithm, a GA and the proposed hybrid matching-GA approach. The hybrid method combines the qualities of both the matching algorithm and the GA showing promising results.

The use of recommender systems is widespread in several everyday systems. People are now exposed to different offerings, based on their interests, in order to anticipate decisions. However, in a different way recommender systems for accessibility domain require further studies and researches. In order to provide resources for people with special needs, we developed the Vulcanus, a recommender system designed for people with disabilities, offering access to resources according user's needs. The recommender system approaches concepts from ubiquitous computing, such as user profiles, context awareness, trails management, and similarity analysis. Vulcanus uses two different approaches: resources patterns and categories patterns; where different systems can use it, for example as a Web Service. Vulcanus was evaluated in different scenarios. These scenarios used more than 800 thousands of trails that simulate wheelchair users using resources along six months. The obtained results show that both approaches are able to provide relevant recommendations, providing resources that in fact can support users' needs.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. For that, this work proposes a new set of mapping rules to translate UML/-MARTE elements into VHDL constructs, allowing the generation of fully synthesizable descriptions, including the embedded system structure and behavior. The proposed mapping rules have been implemented in GenERTiCA tool, which is used in AMoDE-RT to generate source code from UML/MARTE models, enabling the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation. The proposed approach has been validated using a valve control system as case study. The obtained results show a decrease in FPGA used area, as well as a small impact on system performance. These results indicate the practicability of a full translation from UML elements into VHDL, opening room for specifying the system behavior using higher abstraction levels even for FPGA-based embedded system implementation.
