Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Technology for Teaching grant, the School of Engineering and Technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. Social networks provide a new way of communication that still preserves our human social interaction. Due to the widespread use of mobile devices, people tend to use their smartphone or tablet as the main way to make that interaction. Furthermore, applications developed to these devices are fostering the use of contextual information, such as the location of the user. In this way, this article proposes Mingle, a model for a spontaneous social network targeted at mobile devices. In our proposal, the social network is spontaneous, i.e. involves only people that are physically present in a specific location. Besides presenting the model, we show a developed prototype using Android-based devices. We evaluated Mingle employing two strategies, a usage case and a performance evaluation. The results were encouraging and show the potential of deploying Mingle in real situations.

It is well known that face recognition (FR) systems cannot perform well under uncontrolled conditions, but there are no general and robust approaches with total immunity to all conditions. Hence, we present an adjustable FR framework with the aid of the Differential Evolution (DE) optimization algorithm. This approach implements several preprocessing and feature extraction techniques aiming to compensate the illumination variation. The main feature of the present work stands on the use of the DE which is responsible for choosing which strategies to use, as well as tunning the parameters involved. In this case study, we aim to address the illumination compensation problem applying on the well known Yale Extended B face dataset. According to the proposed FR framework, the DE can choose any combination of the following techniques and tune its necessary parameters achieving optimized values: the Gamma Intensity Correction (GIC), the Wavelet-based Illumination Normalization (WBIN), the Gaussian Blur, the Laplacian Edge Detection, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and the Local Binary Patterns (LBP). Our experimental analysis confirms that the proposed approach is suitable for FR using images under varying conditions. It is proved by the average recognition rate of 99.95% obtained using four different datasets.

This paper presents a cycle of action research conducted to investigate techniques for visualization and filtering of awareness information in a mobile collaborative game titled Warming Up The Brain. This study aims to identify the awareness information that should be presented to the users as well as how to arrange the awareness information in the mobile devices, considering its small screen size. In order to avoid problems such as information overload and information intrusiveness, the awareness information were filtered based on the group data. The game was used by 30 players, divided in 7 rounds. The usability evaluation show that the awareness information were well absorbed by users.

The cloud computing model enables users to view computational resources as unlimited and that can be dynamically reserved. In addition, users are charged according to a contracted configuration and effective reservation time. Thus, it became possible to dynamically provision Virtual Infrastructures (VIs) composed of virtual machines, containers and virtualized network resources. Due to the flexibility in resource provisioning and configuration, VI is being increasingly adopted for hosting data storage services, development platforms and distributed applications. However, when migrating applications to a cloud, users are faced with a significant amount of providers, brokers and services offered. Above all, cloud computing technologies, although innovative, do not ease the migration of virtualized resources between distinct providers, inducing in vendor lock-in. A wide range of cloud providers, APIs, models and management tools further limit the development of VI migration solutions between providers, characterizing an open challenge. This work proposes a mechanism to perform VI migration among providers, based on an architecture agnostic to source and destination providers, as well as VI-hosted applications. In addition, a prototype based on Docker containers and OpenStack clouds was developed both to validate the proposed mechanism and to serve as a reference implementation.

Global network alignment is the computational problem of determining the similarity between nodes of different networks to establish a one-to-one correspondence between them. It has important applications in the biological field, particularly for discovering similar roles between the elements of different systems or for transferring knowledge from a well-studied system to another. In this paper, we present SHELLEY, a tool that facilitates the development, testing, and combination of learning-based network alignment algorithms by providing a set of modules that allow for the recreation and combination of both representation learning methods (RLMs) and deep matching methods (DMMs). Service identities are crucial for authentication and access control, ensuring that only authorized services access specific resources. The SPIFFE framework addresses workload identity management and authentication effectively but needs support for solutions (e.g., extensible tokens) that fine-granular authorization mechanisms in distributed scenarios can use. In this context, we present the Lightweight SVID (LSVID), an identity document in JSON format that can be extended and used as a token. As an extensible token, Lightweight SVID (LSVID) enables features such as delegation, attenuation, and traceability, enhancing its flexibility and applicability. Our approach provides efficient handling of token extensions and validations, demonstrated through a proof-of-concept implemented in Go. Baseline results indicate that LSVID critical operations are efficient, with processing times in the microsecond range, offering significant functional advantages over the traditional JWT-SVIDs, one of two key security documents from SPIFFE.

Industrial IoT systems are constantly increasing security to mitigate failures and unallowed access. Nowadays, enterprise systems can handle large amounts of sensitive information that can be received from hundreds of tiny devices such as sensors, fog devices, gateways, etc. However, the lower processing capacity associated with tiny devices due to manufacturing decisions has contributed to their lack of defensive measures and hardware security support. Those devices performance usually restricts advanced software security usage and results in several vulnerabilities in the device’s authentication. RFID tags have been used in the IoT industry to create a variety of applications for identification, authentication, or even virtual proof of reality, but RFID tags are still susceptible to serious attacks since fake RFID devices or other attacks are trying to find ways of bypassing the security. In this paper, 5 (five) machine learning algorithms have been used to classify a dataset of read-time operations from blocks in Mifare RFID and fake tags, aiming to identify different behaviors between dataset’s variables, which can be used for a Physical Unclonable Functions (PUF). According to our results, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) offered the best performance for the considered problem. The KNN obtained a root mean squared error equal to 0.058 and an mean absolute error equal to 0.003. The obtained results indicate that operation times have variables inherent to the manufacturing process and this can be useful for future identity management schemes.

In this study, we integrate the established obstacle problem formulation from ice sheet modeling [12, 20] with cutting-edge deep learning methodologies to enhance ice thickness predictions, specifically targeting the Greenland ice sheet. By harmonizing the mathematical structure with an energy minimization framework tailored for neural network approximations, our method’s efficacy is confirmed through both 1D and 2D numerical simulations. Utilizing the NSIDC-0092 dataset for Greenland [1] and incorporating bedrock topography for model pre-training, we register notable advances in prediction accuracy. Our research underscores the potent combination of traditional mathematical models and advanced computational techniques in delivering precise ice thickness estimations. © 2024, CC BY.
