Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication related to diabetes that affects approximately 33% of individuals with this condition and, if not detected and treated early, can lead to irreversible vision loss. Fundus lesions such as Hard and Soft Exudates, Hemorrhages, and Microaneurysms typically identify DR. The development of computational methods to segment these lesions plays a fundamental role in the early diagnosis of the disease. This paper proposes a new approach that uses an R2U-Net combined with data augmentation techniques for segmenting fundus lesions. We trained, adjusted, and evaluated the proposed work in the DDR dataset, achieving an accuracy of 99.87% and a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) equal 59.69%. Furthermore, we assessed it in the IDRiD dataset, achieving an mIoU of 49.92%. The results obtained in the experiments highlight the potential contribution of the model in the lesion annotations for creating new DR datasets, which is essential given the scarcity of annotations in publicly available datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

The recognition of Intellectual Capital as a source of competitive advantage and differentiation element for organizations requires an application of new management strategies that include this feature. Considering the importance of the Accounting Information System (AIS) in organizations, the research has the main objective to investigate the contributions of accounting as Management Information System in management of Intellectual Capital in an organization. Therefore, it was adopted a single case study as research strategy, applied in a Brazilian industry of consumption goods, on the market for over 85 years. The results obtained in the documentary analysis, questionnaires, interviews and literature show that the Accounting Management Information System (AMIS) contributes to the management of Intellectual Capital. In the investigated organization, AMIS is widely used and shows similarities with the specifications found in the literature, possessing the ability of adaptation to receive indicators or variables that enable the management of Intellectual Capital. It was found that the incorporation of the variables of Intellectual Capital in AMIS could be accomplished by adopting the method proposed by López-Ruiz and Nevado-Pena, that uses both traditional financial indicators and indicators of Intellectual Capital, not conflicting with the traditional AMIS, but complementing it. Inserting variables of Intellectual Capital in AMIS also allows uniformity of understanding on the subject by all company managers. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper we present the use of participatory design in a public health management system, called PRONTO, that is being developed in Brazil. This system involves a partnership between the city hall and the University of Blumenau and it is being developed by the Development Laboratory and Transfer of Technology. The project involves a health network with 64 units of family health, 8 ambulatories and 1 polyclinic. The paper describes the experience in the project phase of the Multidisciplinary Treatment System module and presents the obtained results.

This work is concerned with the optimal supply of products in competitive conditions when their random demand is ruled by an exponential mean as function of their prices. Assuming that demand can be observed as a function of random variables, it is shown that an optimal stop-of-supply explicit function can be adapted from the theory of stochastic and risk analysis. Furthermore the optimal control model of planning in a context of operations in a chemical supply chain is briefly sketched.

Analyzing Performance of the Parallel-based Fractal Image Compression Problem on Multicore Systems

Both the size and the resolution of images always were key topics in the graphical computing area. Especially, they become more and more relevant in the big data era. We can observe that often a huge amount of data is exchanged by medium/low bandwidth networks or yet, they need to be stored on devices with limited space of memory. In this context, the present paper shows the use of the Fractal method for image compression. It is a lossy method known by providing higher indexes of file reduction through a highly time consuming phase. In this way, we developed a model of parallel application for exploiting the power of multiprocessor architectures in order to get the Fractal method advantages in a feasible time. The evaluation was done with different-sized images as well as by using two types of machines, one with two and another with four cores. The results demonstrated that both the speedup and efficiency are highly dependent of the number of cores. They emphasized that a large number of threads does not always represent a better performance.

The banking industry is highly prone to Information Systems (IS) security breaches from outside organizations and inside organizations. There are processes to monitor, detect, measure, and prevent IS security threats from an outside organization. However, inside organization threats to IS security are very challenging to monitor and detect, especially employee-related. The paper aims to understand how leadership plays a vital role in employee information systems security intention in the banking industry. Therefore, research applied full-range leadership style theory (FRLT) to assess the role of leadership style on employees’ information systems security intention. The study collects 517 responses from non-managerial bank employees from Brazilian banks using questionnaires and tested the theoretical relationship using partial least square structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that transformational leadership has a positive impact on the development of employee information systems security intention, whereas passive leadership harms employee intention toward information systems security. In addition to that results also show that age, education level, and work experience have moderating effects on employee intention toward information systems security. The research will help the banking industry to influence employee IS security intention through proactive and transformational leadership. In addition, it will also help leaders to understand employee intention toward information systems security aspects. Integrity of Cyber-Physical Discrete Event Systems under covert actuator attacks

The connectivity requirements brought by Industry 4.0 pose new challenges for cyber-physical systems (CPS), such as the strengthening of their resilience against cyberattacks. In this paper, we use the discrete event systems (DES) formalism to develop an approach that aims to protect CPS from covert actuator attacks using event permutation maps. In this approach, properly selected controllable events are permuted on the plant's site so that attacks on actuators do not have the impact on the plant as expected by the intruder and unsafe states are avoided. Furthermore, a property termed AE-protectability is presented to characterize the necessary and sufficient conditions for the system to be protected against such attacks through event permutations. The proposed approach is applied to a case study where the Identification of the attack is done without causing damage while maintaining the integrity of the system.

Reference genomes of root microbes are essential for metagenomic analyses and mechanistic studies of crop root microbiomes. By combining high-throughput bacterial cultivation with metagenomic sequencing, we constructed comprehensive bacterial and viral genome collections from the roots of wheat, rice, maize, and Medicago. The crop root bacterial genome collection (CRBC) significantly expands the quantity and phylogenetic diversity of publicly available crop root bacterial genomes, with 6,699 bacterial genomes (68.9% from isolates) and 1,817 undefined species, expanding crop root bacterial diversity by 290.6%. The crop root viral genome collection (CRVC) contains 9,736 non-redundant viral genomes, with 1,572 previously unreported genus-level clusters in crop root microbiomes. From these, we identified conserved bacterial functions enriched in root microbiomes across soils and host species and uncovered previously unexplored bacteria-virus connections in crop root ecosystems. Together, the CRBC and CRVC serve as valuable resources for investigating microbial mechanisms and applications, supporting sustainable agriculture. © 2025 The Authors

The ornamental rock industry in Brazil is distinguished by its diverse assortment of rock types, presenting a unique challenge in classification due to its inherent subjectivity and reliance on expert judgment. to address this problem, the present study introduces a publicly accessible database encompassing 12 distinct classes of ornamental rocks, including granite, marble, and quartzite. This database comprises 1,798 images sourced directly from entities within the stone sector. We employ and compare the performance of seven neural network models for ornamental rock image classification: VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet101, Xception, InceptionV3, and the Vision Transformer (ViT). Our empirical analysis reveals that the ViT model outperforms conventional architectures, achieving an accuracy rate of 98.36%.

Precise measurements of chronic wound areas are very important for measuring the efficacy of different treatments, since it provides a clear picture of the chosen treatment evolution. The most used techniques still in use for measuring the wound areas involve manual measuring, paper scales and/or acetate tracing, with each health professional possibly measuring the wounds in slightly different ways, specially when dealing with the wound's depth. Thus, it is common to observe inconsistent wound area estimations by different health workers on the same wounds. Moreover, the measuring process requires direct contact with the wound, increasing the contamination and infection risks, besides possibly causing discomfort for the patient. An alternative that has already been proved successful is the use of Structure from Motion (SfM) to recover three-dimensional representations of a wound's surface and estimate that area. In this work, we analyze the effectiveness of several widely used point descriptors (BRIEF, DRINK, FREAK, ORB, SIFT and SURF) in the SfM wound reconstruction task when applied to real images of realistic synthetic wounds made of latex placed on different areas of the body. The results showed that SIFT, SURF and DRINK produced better area estimates. Since the execution time is a factor, we selected DRINK as the standard descriptor for our system, since it is approximately 9.3 and 4.9 times faster than SIFT and SURF, respectively.
