Machine learning approaches to detect, prevent and mitigate malicious insider threats: State-of-the-art review

Insider threats are profoundly damaging and pose serious security challenges. These threats, perpetrated by insiders, may arise from delinquency, retaliation, or motives such as ambition for success, recognition, financial gain, or knowledge acquisition. They manifest in various forms;for example, an insider might disrupt systems by inserting a malicious script or engage in intellectual property theft. Due to their diverse nature, detection is highly complex and challenging, as standard security devices such as intrusion detection systems, firewalls, or antivirus software cannot detect it;hence, it entails careful and diligent work. This survey reviews existing research between 2010 and 2024 on detecting insider threats. It not only expounds on the novel taxonomy based on previous works and diverse motivations for insider threats but also identifies challenges and gaps in detecting malicious insiders. It highlights the state-of-the-art tools, techniques, and methodologies and also discusses the limitations of the same. Finally, the paper provides an overview of identifying optimal solutions and discusses future research directions that could lead to new methods for detecting insider threats. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The rapid growth of the digital industry has created a higher demand for robust Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) to protect valuable information and the integrity of network infrastructures as the digital industry grows rapidly. One of the most important challenges in the current intrusion detection landscape is the growing sophistication of cyber threats, including zero-day attacks, polymorphic malware, and advanced persistent threats, which are difficult to detect using traditional methods. Furthermore, systems often suffer from high false positive rates and struggle to scale effectively in real-time applications. Traditionally, intrusion detection methods were quite effective, but performance is still lacking due to the inability to adapt to evolving threats. Recent breakthroughs include deep learning approaches, ensemble methods, and hybrid detection models. However, these are still plagued by high computational overhead and a lack of transparency in their decision-making processes. The work exploits Optuna for the optimization of hyperparameters, specifically in the performance improvement of various ML models. Among the best-ranked frameworks for the optimization of hyperparameters, Optuna provides a principled method for tuning hyperparameters, resulting in significantly enhanced accuracy and efficiency of the intrusion detection model. The implication of this research work is that it searches for the best configuration of parameters for each algorithm with balanced false positives and detection rates. The study includes an overall scenario of recent development in NIDS. More precisely, this paper shows how Hyperparameter tuning attains very superior model performance compared to other models. The comparative results presented have shown that models which are optimized using Optuna surpass the non-optimized ones by a huge margin with respect to accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score. In human life, skin cancer is a curse. If not appropriately diagnosed, it spreads around all body parts in the earlier stage. The melanoma skin cancer death rate is 75% all over the world. There is an urgent need for a cure to be in place. Swarm and evolutionary computation for healthcare deals with real-world healthcare applications. One of the best ways to do this is to find the genes that need to be turned off such that only cancer cells can die. The current therapies used to cure cancer focus on turning off cancer cells but, at times, affect healthy tissues. Using the power of Artificial Intelligence, one can easily mark out the cancer-affected area and provide treatment accordingly. Segmentation techniques can be used to mark cancer lesions, and advanced deep learning algorithms in computer vision can help classify which class of cancer lesions. Automatic detection of melanoma by using a dermoscopic sample is tricky to find the stage and percentage of lesions affected by using deep convolutional neural networks with the help of machine vision tools. To predict skin lesions, we developed a model with three layers, each having output channels of 16, 32, and 64, respectively. For this research, different samples were collected from the international skin imaging collaboration database (ISIC2019, ISIC2020, ISIC2021). The study computed the most important parameters for classifying and identifying the lesion with accuracy, precision, recall, and specificity values. The proposed DCNN model classifier attained an accuracy of 88.82%, 93.45%, and 95.15% with the respective datasets of ISIC2019, ISIC2020, and ISIC2021, indicating high performance compared with the other state-of-the-art networks. The proposed model is a better framework for automating early detection and classification of melanoma skin cancer to protect many lives and avoid mishaps. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Efficient energy management is a cornerstone of advancing cognitive cities,where AI,IoT,and cloud computing seamlessly integrate to meet escalating global energy *** this context,the ability to forecast electricity consumption with precision is vital,particularly in residential settings where usage patterns are highly variable and *** study presents an innovative approach to energy consumption forecasting using a bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)*** a dataset containing over twomillionmultivariate,time-series observations collected froma single household over nearly four years,ourmodel addresses the limitations of traditional time-series forecasting methods,which often struggle with temporal dependencies and non-linear *** bidirectional LSTM architecture processes data in both forward and backward directions,capturing past and future contexts at each time step,whereas existing unidirectional LSTMs consider only a single temporal *** design,combined with dropout regularization,leads to a 20.6%reduction in RMSE and an 18.8%improvement in MAE over conventional unidirectional LSTMs,demonstrating a substantial enhancement in prediction accuracy and *** to existing models—including SVM,Random Forest,MLP,ANN,and CNN—the proposed model achieves the lowest MAE of 0.0831 and RMSE of 0.2213 during testing,significantly outperforming these *** results highlight the model’s superior ability to navigate the complexities of energy usage patterns,reinforcing its potential application in AI-driven IoT and cloud-enabled energy management systems for cognitive *** integrating advanced machine learning techniqueswith IoT and cloud infrastructure,this research contributes to the development of intelligent,sustainable urban environments.

This article presents an in-depth exploration of the acoustofluidic capabilities of guided flexural waves(GFWs)generated by a membrane acoustic waveguide actuator(MAWA).By harnessing the potential of GFWs,cavity-agnostic advanced particle manipulation functions are achieved,unlocking new avenues for microfluidic systems and lab-on-a-chip *** localized acoustofluidic effects of GFWs arising from the evanescent nature of the acoustic fields they induce inside a liquid medium are numerically investigated to highlight their unique and promising *** traditional acoustofluidic technologies,the GFWs propagating on the MAWA’s membrane waveguide allow for cavity-agnostic particle manipulation,irrespective of the resonant properties of the fluidic ***,the acoustofluidic functions enabled by the device depend on the flexural mode populating the active region of the membrane *** demonstrations using two types of particles include in-sessile-droplet particle transport,mixing,and spatial separation based on particle diameter,along with streaming-induced counter-flow virtual channel generation in microfluidic PDMS *** experiments emphasize the versatility and potential applications of the MAWA as a microfluidic platform targeted at lab-on-a-chip development and showcase the MAWA’s compatibility with existing microfluidic systems.

In order to meet the pressing demand for early diagnosis in healthcare, we proposed a unique hybrid architecture in this study that is intended for the categorization of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses. With fewer trainable parameters, faster training times, and less storage needed for model weights, our suggested architecture prioritizes efficiency achieves an impressive 94% accuracy. To effectively diagnose GI disorders, this design combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with Transformers. The creation of this hybrid architecture, which boasts excellent accuracy in illness categorization, decreased storage requirements, and efficiency in training, is one of the research's accomplishments. Our proposed model demonstrates its flexibility for many uses, encouraging simple implementation and expandability. Extensive tests performed on a large dataset of endoscopic images highlight our hybrid architecture's better performance over current techniques. With this study, diagnostics for gastrointestinal diseases have advanced significantly, opening the door to future diagnostic systems that will be more precise and effective. The proposed architecture has outperformed the traditional pre-trained models both in classification accuracy and time to train the model with no weights. © 2024 IEEE.

With the use of cognitive radio (CR) technology, wireless devices can utilize licensed spectrum when it is unused by the licensed users. CR was developed as a response to the wireless spectrum shortage issue caused by the static spectrum allocation. Using CR technology, the unlicensed users can opportunistically access the spectrum during the absence of usage by the licensed users. Clustering is a widely used technique in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) to efficiently manage network resources, optimize spectrum utilization, and enhance overall network performance.
