Evaluating the efficacy of haptic feedback, 360° treadmill-integrated Virtual Reality framework and longitudinal training on decision-making performance in a complex search-and-shoot simulation

Virtual Reality (VR) has made significant strides, offering users a multitude of ways to interact with virtual environments. Each sensory modality in VR provides distinct inputs and interactions, enhancing the user's immersion and presence. However, the potential of additional sensory modalities, such as haptic feedback and 360° locomotion, to improve decision-making performance has not been thoroughly investigated. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the impact of a haptic feedback, 360° locomotion-integrated VR framework and longitudinal, heterogeneous training on decision-making performance in a complex search-and-shoot simulation. The study involved 32 participants from a defence simulation base in India, who were randomly divided into two groups: experimental (haptic feedback, 360° locomotion-integrated VR framework with longitudinal, heterogeneous training) and placebo control (longitudinal, heterogeneous VR training without extrasensory modalities). The experiment lasted 10 days. On Day 1, all subjects executed a search-and-shoot simulation closely replicating the elements/situations in the real world. From Day 2 to Day 9, the subjects underwent heterogeneous training, imparted by the design of various complexity levels in the simulation using changes in behavioral attributes/artificial intelligence of the enemies. On Day 10, they repeated the search-and-shoot simulation executed on Day 1. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a gradual increase in presence, immersion, and engagement compared to the placebo control group. However, there was no significant difference in decision-making performance between the two groups on day 10. We intend to use these findings to design multisensory VR training frameworks that enhance engagement levels and decision-making performance. © 2024, CC BY.

Link prediction has attracted wide attention among interdisciplinaryresearchers as an important issue in complex network. It aims to predict the missing links in current networks and new links that will appear in future *** the presence of missing links in the target network of link prediction studies, the network it processes remains macroscopically as a large connectedgraph. However, the complexity of the real world makes the complex networksabstracted from real systems often contain many isolated nodes. This phenomenon leads to existing link prediction methods not to efficiently implement the prediction of missing edges on isolated nodes. Therefore, the cold-start linkprediction is favored as one of the most valuable subproblems of traditional linkprediction. However, due to the loss of many links in the observation network, thetopological information available for completing the link prediction task is extremely scarce. This presents a severe challenge for the study of cold-start link prediction. Therefore, how to mine and fuse more available non-topologicalinformation from observed network becomes the key point to solve the problemof cold-start link prediction. In this paper, we propose a framework for solving thecold-start link prediction problem, a joint-weighted symmetric nonnegative matrixfactorization model fusing graph regularization information, based on low-rankapproximation algorithms in the field of machine learning. First, the nonlinear features in high-dimensional space of node attributes are captured by the designedgraph regularization term. Second, using a weighted matrix, we associate the attribute similarity and first order structure information of nodes and constrain eachother. Finally, a unified framework for implementing cold-start link prediction isconstructed by using a symmetric nonnegative matrix factorization model to integrate the multiple information extracted together. Subspace-based signal processing techniques, such as the Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariant Techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm, are popular methods for spectral estimation. These algorithms can achieve the so-called super-resolution scaling under low noise conditions, surpassing the well-known Nyquist limit. However, the performance of these algorithms under high-noise conditions is not as well understood. Existing state-of-the-art analysis indicates that ESPRIT and related algorithms can be resilient even for signals where each observation is corrupted by statistically independent, mean-zero noise of size O(1), but these analyses only show that the error ∊ decays at a slow rate ∊ = O͂(n−1/2) with respect to the cutoff frequency n (i.e., the maximum frequency of the measurements). In this work, we prove that under certain assumptions, the ESPRIT algorithm can attain a significantly improved error scaling ∊ = O͂(n−3/2), exhibiting noisy super-resolution scaling beyond the Nyquist limit ∊ = O(n−1) given by the Nyquist-–Shannon sampling theorem. We further establish a theoretical lower bound and show that this scaling is optimal. Our proposed spin valve prototype features an advanced design with a two-dimensional graphene bilayer sandwiched between layers of CrBr3 ferromagnetic insulators. In this configuration, proximity coupling plays a crucial role in determining the magnetization orientations of the graphene layers and significantly influences the in-plane conductivity of the CrBr3 layers. In our study, we place the graphene bilayer between two CrBr3 ferromagnetic insulator layers to create this spin valve structure. Utilizing density functional theory (DFT), we perform comprehensive calculations to investigate the electronic structure of this layered system. Our results reveal a substantial band gap of 56.87 meV at specific k-points, particularly pronounced in the antiparallel magnetization configuration. This finding marks a significant advancement in spintronics, highlighting the potential of our spin valve prototype to contribute to the development of cutting-edge electronic device technologies. © 2024, CC BY.

Metriplectic systems are learned from data in a way that scales quadratically in both the size of the state and the rank of the metriplectic data. Besides being provably energy conserving and entropy stable, the proposed approach comes with approximation results demonstrating its ability to accurately learn metriplectic dynamics from data as well as an error estimate indicating its potential for generalization to unseen timescales when approximation error is low. Examples are provided which illustrate performance in the presence of both full state information as well as when entropic variables are unknown, confirming that the proposed approach exhibits superior accuracy and scalability without compromising on model expressivity. Quantum-limited Josephson parametric amplifiers play a pivotal role in advancing the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics by enabling the fast and high-fidelity measurement of weak microwave signals. Therefore, it is necessary to develop robust parametric amplifiers with low noise, broad bandwidth, and reduced design complexity for microwave detection. However, current broadband parametric amplifiers either have degraded noise performance or rely on complex designs. Here, we present a device based on the broadband impedance-transformed Josephson parametric amplifier that integrates a hornlike coplanar waveguide transmission line, which significantly decreases the design and fabrication complexity while keeping comparable performance. The device shows an instantaneous bandwidth of 700 (200) MHz for 15 (20) dB gain with an average input saturation power of −110 dBm and near quantum-limited added noise. The operating frequency can be tuned over 1.4 GHz using an external flux bias. We further demonstrate the negligible backaction from our device on a transmon qubit. The amplification performance and simplicity of our device promise its wide adaptation in quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum information processing.
