Quantum systems, fabricated across various spatial scales from nano to micrometers, are very delicate and naturally sensitive to the variations of their environment. These features make them excellent candidates for serving as sensors with wide range of applications. Indeed, the exceptional precision of quantum sensors arises from their compact size and inherent sensitivity, enabling measurements with unprecedented accuracy within highly localized regions. A key advantage of quantum sensors lies in their resource efficiency, as their achievable precision can scale super-linearly with respect to resources, such as system size, in contrast to the linear scaling characteristic of classical sensors. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as quantum-enhanced sensitivity, fundamentally depends on exploiting uniquely quantum mechanical features, including superposition, entanglement, and squeezing. Originally, quantum sensing was formulated for particles prepared in a special form of entangled states. Yet, certain realization of these probes may be susceptible to decoherence and interaction between particles may also be detrimental to their performance. An alternative framework for quantum sensing has been developed through exploiting quantum many-body systems, where the interaction between particles plays a crucial role. In this review, we investigate different aspects of the latter approach for quantum metrology and sensing. Many-body probes have been used for sensing purposes in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium scenarios. Quantum criticality, as a well-studied subject in many-body physics, has been identified as a resource for achieving quantum-enhanced sensitivity in both of these scenarios. In equilibrium, various types of criticalities, such as first order, second order, topological, and localization phase transitions have been exploited for sensing purposes. Background: A complex travel behaviour among users is intertwined with many factors. Traditionally, the exploration in travel mode choice modeling has been dominated by the Discrete Choice model, nonetheless, owing to the advancement in computational techniques, machine learning has gained traction in understanding travel behavior. Aim: This study aims at predicting users’ travel model choice by means of machine learning models against a conventional Discrete Choice Model, i.e., Binary Logistic Regression. Objective: To investigate the comparison between machine learning models, namely Neural Network, Random Forest, Decision Tree, and Support Vector Machine against the Discrete Choice Model (Binary Logistic Regression) in the prediction of travel mode choice amongst Kuantan City. Methodology: The dataset was collected in Kuantan City, Malaysia, through the Revealed/Stated Preferences (RP/SP) Survey. The data collected was split into a ratio of 80:20 for training and testing before evaluating them between the aforesaid models. The hyperparameters of the models were set to default. The performance of the models is evaluated based on classification accuracy. Results: It was shown in the present study that the Neural Network Model is able to attain a higher prediction accuracy as compared to Binary Logistic Regression (Discrete Choice Model) in classifying mode choice of Kuantan users either to choose public transport or private vehicles as daily transportation. Feature importance technique is crucial for identifying the significant features in modelling travel mode choice. It is demonstrated that the Neural Network Model can yield exceptional classification of mode choice up to 73.4% and 72.4% of training and testing data, respectively, by considering the features identified via the feature importance technique, suggesting the viability of the proposed technique in supporting an informed decision. As a powerful means of tampering in image content security area, image inpainting based on deep generative networks can yield visually appealing outputs but often produces ambiguous artifacts, particularly in boundary and high semantic areas. To address this issue, a novel end-to-end network with gradient semantics and spatial-smooth attention (GS-SSA) is proposed, which combines a gradient learning network and an image inpainting network. The gradient learning network is meant to properly anticipate the gradient semantics in the hole region and get a complete gradient semantic map. The image inpainting network utilizes the complete gradient semantic map to better repair the missing pixels and obtain the final inpainting results. Moreover, spatial-smooth attention is introduced into the image inpainting network, considering the spatial structural relations and the surrounding information in the hole region respectively. © 2023, The Authors. Our main result says that e−itHPac(H) has integral kernel K(t, x, y) satisfying n(m−1) |K(t, x, y)| ≤ C(1 + |t|)−(2nm −σ)(1 + |t|− 2nm ) (1 + |t|− 21m |x − y|)− 2m−1 , t , 0, x, y ∈ Rn, where σ = 2 if 0 is an eigenvalue of H, and σ = 0 otherwise. A similar result for smoothing operators H 2αm e−itHPac(H) is also given. Non-Gaussian-state generation with time-gated photon detection

Non-Gaussian states of light, which are essential in fault-tolerant and universal optical quantum computation, are typically generated by a heralding scheme using photon detectors. Recently, it has been theoretically shown that the large timing jitter of the photon detectors deteriorates the purity of the generated non-Gaussian states [T. Sonoyama et al., Phys. Rev. A 105, 043714 (2022)]. Here, we circumvent this problem by time-gated photon detection and generate non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity using continuous-wave light. We use a fast optical switch for time gating to effectively improve the timing jitter of a photon-number-resolving detector based on a transition edge sensor from 50 ns to 10 ns. As a result, we generate non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity of −0.011±0.004 (ℏ=1), which cannot be observed without the time-gated photon detection method. These results confirm the effect of the timing jitter on non-Gaussian state generation experimentally for the first time. The proposed time-gated photon detection method would be useful for high-purity non-Gaussian state preparation in optical quantum information processing.

Post-hoc explanations are important for people to understand the predictions of explanation models. One class of methods in post-hoc explanation is the generation of counterfactuals, where a hypothetical example is obtained by perturbing the inputs to show how one could obtain a different prediction from the decision model. Counter-factual explanations should satisfy several properties: One is that counterfactuals generated under specific scenarios and constraints should be feasible for users, i.e., they should accommodate different causal constraints. The other is that it is more desirable for users to have a wider variety of viable examples, i.e., counterfactual diversity. To this end, we propose a parallelizable method based on gradient optimization. We partition the input feasible domains, perform counterfactual generation independently for each feasible domain, and then parallelize the counterfactual generation process for each feasible domain. Experimental results show that our approach effectively improves the diversity, sparsity, and proximity of the generated counterfactual instances on the public datasets Adult-Income, Lending-Club, German-Credit, and COMPAS compared to other models.

Sumanene monolayer of pure carbon: a two-dimensional Kagome-analogy lattice with desirable band gap, ultrahigh carrier mobility and strong exciton binding energy

Design and synthesis of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials that possess robust structural stability and unusual physical properties may open up enormous opportunities for device and engineering applications. Herein we propose a 2D sumanene lattice that be regarded as a derivative of the conventional Kagome lattice. Our tight-binding analysis demonstrates sumanene lattice contains two sets of Dirac cones and two sets of flat bands near the Fermi surface, distinctively different from the Kagome lattice. Using first-principles calculations, we theoretically suggest two possible routines for realization of stable 2D sumanene monolayers (named as α phase and β phase), and α-sumanene monolayer can be experimentally synthesized with chemical vapor deposition using C21H12 as a precursor. Small binding energies on Au(111) surface (e.g. -37.86 eV/Å2 for α phase) signify the possibility of their peel-off after grown on the noble metal substrate. Importantly, our GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations demonstrate both monolayers have moderate band gaps (1.94 eV for α) and ultrahigh carrier mobilities (3.4×104 cm2V−1s−1 for α). In particular, αsumanene monolayer possesses a strong exciton binding energy of 0.73 eV, suggesting potential applications in optics. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
