Accurate net load forecasting is vital for energy planning, aiding decisions on trade and load distribution. However, assessing the performance of forecasting models across diverse input variables, like temperature and humidity, remains challenging, particularly for eliciting a high degree of trust in the model outcomes. In this context, there is a growing need for data-driven technological interventions to aid scientists in comprehending how models react to both noisy and clean input variables, thus shedding light on complex behaviors and fostering confidence in the outcomes. In this paper, we present Forte, a visual analytics-based application to explore deep probabilistic net load forecasting models across various input variables and understand the error rates for different scenarios. With carefully designed visual interventions, this web-based interface empowers scientists to derive insights about model performance by simulating diverse scenarios, facilitating an informed decision-making process. We discuss observations made using Forte and demonstrate the effectiveness of visualization techniques to provide valuable insights into the correlation between weather inputs and net load forecasts, ultimately advancing grid capabilities by improving trust in forecasting models. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

In the present paper, we investigate the impact of imperfections (non-idealities) of the energy storage system (e.g., batteries, capacitors, or supercapacitors) on the energy performance of green IoT nodes. In particular, we investigate the impact of energy leakage from the Energy Storage System (ESS) on important energy performance metrics, such as service outage probability, the density of the lifetime of the node, and the time-dependent mean number of energy packets (EPs) in the ESS. Also, we explore various strategies that can be employed to compensate for the impact of energy losses due to energy leakage on the energy performance metrics. Specifically, we examine two potential strategies for improving the energy performance of the IoT nodes: (i) through increasing the energy generation rate of the energy harvesters (e.g., by adding additional solar panels or replacing the existing solar panels with more efficient ones that can produce more energy), and (ii) through reducing the energy consumption rate of the IoT node (e.g., by configuring ESS energy thresholds below which the nodes are forced to operate in low energy consumption states).

Pipelines are the most convenient ways to transport fluids (e.g., water, oil, and gas). However, leakage of fluids into the environment results in resource wastage (primarily water, which is becoming a scarce resource) and environmental pollution (in the case of leakage of toxic fluids like oil and gas). Emerging technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Artificial Intelligence (AI), distributed computing, and cloud computing enable continuous monitoring of pipelines to detect leakages and corrosion on the pipeline. The main challenge with using battery-powered sensor nodes to monitor pipelines is the energy constraint, necessitating frequent battery replacement. Thus, there is a need to develop energy-saving mechanisms to prolong the lifetime of these sensor nodes. In this paper, we use the diffusion approximation modelling framework in which the data from the experimental testbed are used to model the dynamics of the battery’s energy content and to estimate the mean and variance of the device’s lifetime. The novelty in the proposed diffusion model of the battery of an IoT node is the introduction of multiple energy thresholds that split the energy state-space of the battery into multiple energy-saving regimes. As the battery discharges, the node gradually transitions into energy-saving regimes by reconfiguring some of its parameters to reduce energy consumption (sometimes at the cost of trading off some performance metrics). We investigate the impact of energy-saving regimes or the number of thresholds on the node’s lifetime.

Attention is the brain's mechanism for selectively processing specific stimuli while filtering out irrelevant information. Characterizing changes in attention following long-term interventions (such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)) has seldom been emphasized in the literature. To classify attention performance post-tDCS, this study uses functional connectivity and machine learning algorithms. Fifty individuals were split into experimental and control conditions. On Day 1, EEG data was obtained as subjects executed an attention task. From Day 2 through Day 8, the experimental group was administered 1mA tDCS, while the control group received sham tDCS. On Day 10, subjects repeated the task mentioned on Day 1. Functional connectivity metrics were used to classify attention performance using various machine learning methods. Results revealed that combining the Adaboost model and recursive feature elimination yielded a classification accuracy of 91.84%. We discuss the implications of our results in developing neurofeedback frameworks to assess attention.

This paper presents a novel approach for head tracking in augmented reality (AR) flight simulators using an adaptive fusion of Kalman and particle filters. This fusion dynamically balances the strengths of both algorithms, leveraging Kalman filters for computational efficiency and particle filters for handling non-linearities based on real-time factors such as sensor noise and head movement patterns. Our method demonstrates superior tracking precision and reduced latency, making it particularly effective for immersive pilot training in AR-based flight simulations. While focused on flight simulation, our approach holds high potential for broader applications in other AR and virtual reality (VR) environments where precise, real-time head tracking is crucial. These results provide actionable design guidance for developers optimizing tracking systems in environments that require fast response times and high accuracy. Future extensions of this research could explore the generalization of our approach across diverse AR applications, including human-computer interaction (HCI), medical simulations, and gaming. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

Multitasking requires rapid switching of attention and cognitive resources between different tasks in a dynamic environment, relying on cognitive processes, such as working memory, executive control, and selective attention. Although studies have investigated the efficacy of various neurobehavioral interventions in improving multitasking capabilities, the effects of longitudinal anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in enhancing multitasking performance have not been investigated. This research investigated the efficacy of 1mA anodal tDCS administered longitudinally on multitasking performance. 42 participants were randomly and equally divided into the experimental and placebo control conditions in this study conducted for 10 days. All participants executed two multitasking tasks on day 1 and received 1mA anodal/placebo tDCS during task training from day 2 to day 8. Various behavioral and neurophysiological measures have been measured. The findings revealed that tDCS had the propensity to augment multitasking capabilities in the trained task but had limited transfer capabilities. EEG-based brain connectivity analysis also revealed the formation of network hubs in the prefrontal and frontal regions, indicating enhanced cortical activation in the beta band. We intend to use these findings to design interventional frameworks to enhance multitasking performance using tDCS.

This paper is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in fault tolerance methods for cloud computing. This paper explores fault tolerance in the context of cloud computing and discusses recent challenges and innovations in the field. Moreover, it examines the ongoing research efforts to improve fault-tolerance architectures. At the end of the paper, the paper presents system-level metrics that are relevant to fault tolerance.

In this paper, the high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes are presented for radiation hydrodynamics equations in the equilibrium-diffusion limit. The governor equations contain two parts, one part is a hyperbolic system of conservation laws and another part is a radiative heat transfer term. The discrete schemes are constructed in three parts and possess characteristics of the high-order, oscillation-free and efficient. Firstly, the DG method and local DG (LDG) method are respectively used to discretize the hyperbolic system and radiative heat transfer term to achieve high-order spatial accuracy. Secondly, the combination of the KXRCF shock detector, Hermite WENO limiter, and positivity-preserving limiter is utilized to enhance the robustness of the discretization schemes. Finally, the implicit-explicit schemes are employed for time discretization to enable the schemes suitable for larger time steps. Numerical experiments have verified that the new schemes are high-order accuracy, oscillation-free and efficiency. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
