Recognizing the need for a comprehensive review of the tools and metrics for the quantification and assessment of water footprints, and allowing for the opportunity for open discussion on the challenges and future of water footprinting methodology, an international symposium on water footprint was organized. The Water Footprint Symposium was held in December 2013 at the University of Leeds, UK. In particular, four areas were highlighted for discussion: water footprint and agriculture, quantification of water footprint, industrial water footprint, and from theory to practice. Discussion was organized to focus on the “prioritization of water footprint research & applications to practical sectors”. The concept of water footprinting has helped to better communicate water management and assessment among different research and user communities. Significant research progress has been made in the relations between water footprint and agriculture, quantification of water footprint, industrial water footprint, and the transition from theory to practice. Future water footprint research needs to further enhance assessment accuracy, improve sustainability assessment methodology, develop databases, address uncertainties, and prioritize application by government and in practical sectors. In the Fall of 2010, two Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S and T) engineering management master's degree courses were offered to students at King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While this does not appear at first glance to be a significant accomplishment, it was the culmination of over three years of effort by administration and faculty representatives from both universities. These two courses are the start of a collaborative applied engineering management program (AEMP) that will be the first of its kind in this region. A cohort of full time working students will take both on-site and distance education courses over a two year period. In the final summer session, students will be invited to the Missouri S&T campus for a capstone course. The initial M.S. degree will be a Missouri S&T engineering management degree with the anticipation that within a year students will be able to receive dual M.S. engineering management degrees, one from Missouri S&T and the other from KSU. 作者： Woodie Flowers Sarah Stein Greenberg Richard K. Miller Srikant M. Datar Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He helped create MIT's renowned INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN COURSE. Flowers also received national recognition in his role as host for the PBS television series Scientific American Frontiers from 1990 to 1993 and received a New England EMMY Award for a special PBS program on design. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and has received three honorary doctorates. He is a MacVicar Faculty Fellow for extraordinary contributions to undergraduate education at MIT where he is a member of the faculty advisory committee for MITX the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange. He was also the inaugural recipient of the Woodie Flowers Award from FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). He recently received the Edward F. Church Medal and the Spira Outstanding Design Educator Award from ASME. Currently Flowers is a director or scientific advisor for four companies. He is also national advisor and chairman of the executive advisor board for FIRST. Has been managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (also known as the d.school) since 2010. Previously she worked in the innovation practice of Monitor Group in the US and India and advised multinational companies on developing innovation capabilities. Radiological characteristics of charged particle interactions in the first clay-nanoparticle dichromate gel dosimeter

The incorporation of clay nanoparticles into gel dosimeters shows promise for significant diffusion reduction – but to what extent does the presence of the nano-clay influence charged particle interactions and, in particular, what is the impact on water equivalence? In this work, we quantify the radiological characteristics of electron, proton and carbon ion interactions in the RIKEN dichromate nanoclay gel and specifically evaluate the water equivalence over a broad energy range. Results indicate that the radiological properties are sufficiently representative of tissues that this low-diffusion gel could readily be used for validation of complex dose distributions. Electron and proton ranges are within 1 % of those in water. Mean effective atomic numbers for electron interactions in the range 10 keV – 10 GeV are within 1 % of those of water which, coupled with the similar mass density, ultimately means the overall impact on dose distributions is not great. The range of C6+ ions in the nanoclay gel is closer to that of water (< 4 %) than a common polymer gel dosimeter (< 7 %), though experimentally measured R1 values indicate an over-response at low doses.
