Applying the principles of Six Sigma to environmental management systems

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential benefits of applying the key principles of Six Sigma to environmental management systems (EMSs). A conceptual framework for the application of Six Sigma to EMSs was developed. The application of the conceptual framework is demonstrated in a case study focused on a major Middle Eastern manufacturing company. The case study showed that there were numerous benefits to applying the principles of Six Sigma to EMSs. An approach based on the conceptual framework was successful in reducing thinner consumption in the case company's paint-mixing room by 37%. Other benefits included cost reductions, less waste to the landfill, decreased amount of waste water, reduction of emissions, reduction of energy consumption and safety improvements. It is anticipated that the results will be of interest to practitioners and researchers in quality and environmental management. Copyright © 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The United States (US) Department of Defense (DoD) offers a great opportunity to implement solar energy solutions across its US bases. It is the single largest energy consumer in the federal government and has sufficient land requirements to implement solar energy solutions. By implementing solar energy solutions across its bases in the US, the DoD will be able to realize benefits such as meeting federal policies and mandates, reducing energy intensity from fossil fuel resources (including foreign oil), reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and improving national security and mission readiness. This report describes the current DoD energy landscape for its facilities and nontactical (fleet) vehicles, DoD benefits of implementing solar energy technologies, and research methods and results that will help realize these benefits through the development of a decision model that will augment the implementation of solar energy technologies on DoD bases. Since the industrial revolution, technology has been changing at a rapid pace. In the twenty-first century globalization has created enormous pressure on both the corporate and public sector in terms of market reform and privatization, which have resulted in short to medium term contracting in engineering and management. This paper attempts to define the role of engineering management (EM) in Gulf States Countries (GSC). The practice of EM in GSC will be assessed by reviewing the evolution and the status of State's EM education. A special survey will be designed to find the extent of EM practice in Gulf Country's industrial organizations. The survey on the status of local associations that implement and promote EM will be tapped. Then, the existence of both engineering and management academic programs in the universities are used as indicators of the current status of the practice of EM. In addition, the results of this study can be used to assess the need for establishing EM academic program at the universities in Gulf Countries. Also, the outcome of this paper will help the engineers to define the necessary technical and management skills they need in order to develop and play their dual role.

As well as the paper comprises state-of-the-art KM tools, grouped by specific classification areas and functionalities. Trends and integration efforts are detailed with a focus on identifying current and future ITM and market evolution.

Changing technology and increased constituent demand for government services derive the need for governmental responsiveness. The government organisations in the developing countries will be under increased pressure to change their bureaucratic systems to be able to respond rapidly to changing and increasing requirements and rapid technology advancements. This paper aims to present a conceptual framework for explaining the main barriers and drivers of public E-service development. Therefore, the framework provides a basic context within which the process and practice of E-Service can be implemented successfully in the public sector organisations. The framework is flexible enough to be adopted by governments at different levels;national or local by developing countries around the world.

This paper presents results of simulating a more collusive behavior of a group of natural gas producing and exporting countries, sometimes called GASPEC. We use the World Gas Model, a dynamic, strategic representation of world gas production, trade, and consumption between 2005 and 2030. In particular, we simulate a closer cooperation of the GASPEC countries when exporting pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas;we also run a more drastic scenario where GASPEC countries deliberately hold back production. The results show that compared to our Base Case, a gas cartel would reduce total supplied quantities and induce price increases in gas importing countries up to 22%. There is evidence that the natural gas markets in Europe and North America would be affected more than other parts of the world. Lastly, the vulnerability of gas importers worldwide is further illustrated by the results of a sensitivity case in which price levels are up to 87% higher in Europe and North America. Long-term care facilities are currently exposed to powerful forces demanding organisational change based on synergy and cooperation. The adoption of network structures is frequently regarded as an appropriate solution to this challenge by health politics. Focusing on the concrete example of the integrated long-term care network for the elderly in the Austrian land of Tyrol, the article aims (1) to explore which criteria the lawgiver formulated for the nursing cooperation structures, (2) to examine which targets and functional requirements the managers of the nursing institutions involved theoretically demand from a network structure in long-term care and (3) to investigate the functionality of the network by means of an empirical study focusing on the processes at interorganisational interfaces. Merging the major findings of the legal, theoretical and empirical enquiry, structural and functional efficiency criteria are derived, which are suggested as a framework for the evaluation of integrative nursing networks.
