Advancements in manufacturing technologies have enabled material system design optimization at multiple length scales. However, the microstructural anomalies and uncertainties present at each scale have not been considered comprehensively enough for systems to be robust to manufacturing variations. Consequently, considering anomalies at various length scales of the material’s structure and understanding their effects on a part’s response are crucial for designing engineered parts that are robust to various sources of uncertainty. In this work, an efficient bottom-up hierarchical uncertainty quantification and propagation framework bridging multiple scales to establish a design allowable range for the material system at the part-scale is presented. We demonstrate our framework on an additively manufactured polymer nanocomposite material system that is subject to anomalies at different length scales that impact the material properties. Specifically, agglomeration defects formed due to attractive forces between nanoparticles at the microscale and structural variabilities caused by the voids resulting from different processing conditions at the mesoscale are considered. The introduced hierarchical sampling framework combines (i) an innovative microstructure image characterization and reconstruction, (ii) a mechanistic reduced-order model that enables fast property predictions for high-dimensional microstructural design spaces, and (iii) efficient uncertainty quantification and propagation through Copula-based sampling across multiple length scales to reduce the sampling budget by 95%. Through validation of our method, we demonstrate the importance of considering the effects of process-induced microstructure features on the performance of a part. © 2024, The Authors. This study aims to analyze the reasons that motivate Brazilian companies to implement Quality management Systems, according to ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Based on information collected in the literature, a questionnaire was developed and answered by professionals that work with the mentioned standard in their companies. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the collected data to group the validated variables into two constructs that present the most part of information variance. These constructs were entitled “internal improvements related motives” and “market related motives”. The findings of this research confirm and complement previous studies performed in Brazil and in other countries. © 2021 American Society for Quality.

Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Effectively managing food supply chains is critical for ensuring food security and safety. Identifying and prioritizing the criteria affecting food supply chain performance is imperative to manage uncertainty and avoid undesirable consequences in Supply Chain management (SCM). This study aims to identify and prioritize critical criteria affecting food supply chains under uncertainty. We use the Delphi method to choose the predominating criteria classified into four groups: Resilience and Flexibility, Transparency and Traceability, Communication and Collaboration, and Regulation and Standardization. The fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method is used next to prioritize the selected criteria based on their significance. The results show investment in research and development, transparency and traceability, risk-sharing and collaboration among stakeholders, are the top criteria for food supply chain security and safety. These findings contribute to formulating and developing effective strategies for securing food supply chains. © 2023 The Author(s)

Transportation sector due to increased pavement lengths is one of main sources of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. With increased environmental awareness and focus on recycling, many studies used recycled material in pavement systems to implement the sustainability. The recycling of waste glass in pavement systems has attracted much interest worldwide due to increased disposal costs. As a pavement material, waste glass could be used as an aggregate substitute in Portland cement concrete, asphalt mixtures and base/sub-base courses. When finely ground, glass can also be used as supplementary cementitious material for substituting partial cement. This paper reviews the different uses of waste glass in pavement systems and the effect of the glass properties on the performance of pavement materials. This review compared the test results reported by different researchers and discusses limitations of using recycled glass in pavement systems along with potential applications. Further, many aspects of the local markets were found to be supportive of diverting recycled glass to concrete products, however, the cost of glass milling and the limited use of concrete products containing glass locally make such diversion uneconomical at the present time. The findings from this review study are expected to advance knowledge in recycling waste glass in pavement systems and offer an effective technique for diverting a large amount of waste glass from landfills. © 2021 Widener University School of Civil engineering. Current article has been developed for understanding the impact of data analytics and machine learning technique in e-commerce. If the observation has been developed for the current market of this technology it can be detected that real-life industry increases their investment which showed the interest in getting advantages. Identification of the problem of costing and different algorithm suitability objectives has been set for understanding the real impact of e-commerce. Secondary data collection has been used for understanding the different usability of machine learning and data analytics for e-commerce. It has been detected that using machine learning brings the benefits of automation and improves continuous growth. Data analytics provide the scope of accuracy build-up. This paper examines the reproducibility of massive information analytics under particular factors. The paper proposes the “performing Scalable Inference” technique to cope with scalability troubles and to exploit current big statistics platforms for efficient computing and statistics garage of the statistics. In particular, the paper describes how to perform leak-free, parallelizable visible analytics over massive datasets using present extensive records analytics frameworks such as Apache Flink. This method presents an automated manner to execute analytics that preserves reproducibility and the ability to make adjustments without re-running the entire technique. The paper also demonstrates how these analytics may help several real-world use instances, explore affected person cohorts for studies, and develop stratified patient cohorts for hospital therapy. In the end, the paper observes how the proposed method may be exercised within the real world. Actively scalable inference for massive information analytics is pivotal in optimizing decision-making and allocation of assets. Typically, such inferences are made based on information accumulated from numerous sources, databases, unstructured data, and different digital sources. So one can ensure scalability, a complete cloud-primarily based platform has to be hired. This solution will permit the ***, deploying the essential records series and evaluation algorithms are prime here. It could permit the platform to recognize the styles inside the statistics and discover any ability correlations or traits. Additionally, predictive analytics and system mastering strategies may be incorporated to provide insights into the results of the information. In the long run, by leveraging those techniques, the platform can draw efficient inferences and appropriately compare situations in an agile and green way..

Experimental and numerical characterization of EPS using elastoplastic response in ABAQUS

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is an attractive research area in the field of construction engineering. Its ultra-lightweight properties, high compressibility , and environmental-friendly characteristics make it ideal for the use as a compressible backfilling material for embankments, a filling material behind retaining walls and many other applications. Consequently, the compressive strength is one of the important properties for engineers. To this end, this paper aims to create a simplified elastoplastic model for the uniaxial unconfined compressive behavior of EPS. The developed model can predict the plastic stress–strain behavior of EPS using only its elastic modulus . A mathematical curve fitting model was developed by testing several 50 × 50 × 50 mm cube specimens under the test setup of a 50 kN uniaxial loading machine. Then, the proposed model was validated through the elastoplastic behavior in ABAQUS, by creating a finite element model for the described test setup. It was found that the proposed experimental test setup resulted in reasonable stress–strain behavior for EPS, similar to that indicated in the literature. Also, the presented mathematical model can accurately predict the stress–strain behavior of EPS, which was validated using the elastoplastic response in ABAQUS.

Benefits of a failure friendly culture, e.g., learning from failure, are widely known in occupational settings. Validated scales have been developed to measure organizational failure culture and individuals' mind-sets on failure. While research on learning from failure exists in secondary education, scales for higher education are lacking. To support both higher education engineering instructors and students, this contribution aims to develop a Culture of Failure Scale to assess students' and lecturers' handling of failures in engineering higher education settings. This data-driven approach helps inform instructors about aspects of educational settings that are safe and conducive to learning and supports their students to develop a mind-set where failures are seen as a source for improvements and learning. Exemplary application of the developed scale is shown by assessing the failure culture in different groupings, e.g., gender, between two participating German and US institutions.
