As the world grows and develops, people become more aware of business operational processes that are extremely harmful to our environment. Benefits of a failure friendly culture, e.g., learning from failure, are widely known in occupational settings. Validated scales have been developed to measure organizational failure culture and individuals' mind-sets on failure. While research on learning from failure exists in secondary education, scales for higher education are lacking. To support both higher education engineering instructors and students, this contribution aims to develop a Culture of Failure Scale to assess students' and lecturers' handling of failures in engineering higher education settings. This data-driven approach helps inform instructors about aspects of educational settings that are safe and conducive to learning and supports their students to develop a mind-set where failures are seen as a source for improvements and learning. Exemplary application of the developed scale is shown by assessing the failure culture in different groupings, e.g., gender, between two participating German and US institutions.

Assessing the ecosystem service values of tea plantations using conventional and organic farming methods: Is organic farming always better?

Low-elevation mountainous (LEM) areas in some countries are reclaimed for agriculture (especially, for deep cultivation of tea trees) due to their accessibility, higher temperature, and more rainfall, contributing to biodiversity and ecological balance. However, extensive development in these areas causes lasting ecological damage;and hence it is crucial to evaluate the ecological value of these areas for formulating relevant ecological protection policies. Therefore, this study evaluated the ecosystem service value of tea plantations in LEM areas using the contingent valuation method based on the subjective consciousness of farmers, rather than an objective assessment. A questionnaire survey was conducted on tea farmers in Mingjian Township (which is one of the major tea-producing LEM areas in Mid-Taiwan);and ecosystem service values of tea plantations between conventional farming methods (CFMs) and organic farming methods (OFMs) were compared. Firstly, the differences in willingness to pay (WTP) for the samples including and excluding protest responses were investigated, and then a regression analysis to estimate the WTP price for maintaining the tea plantation ecology was conducted. Empirical results showed a significantly negative correlation between the WTP price and the education level of farmers in tea plantations using CFMs, but a significantly positive correlation in tea plantations using both CFMs and OFMs. Most respondents were male and used CFMs to operate tea plantations;and those with higher monthly income and using both CFMs and OFMs were willing to pay more. Regarding ecosystem services of tea plantations, the respondents preferred the "provisioning" ecosystem services, and were willing to pay an average of NT$ 718.92 and NT$ 794.32 per year for maintaining the ecology of tea plantations using CFMs and OFMs, respectively. This article discusses how to create an interactive virtual training program at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and computer science for high school students with equity of access. A four-day microseminar, titled Swarming Powered by Neuroscience (SPN), was conducted virtually through a combination of presentations and interactive computer game simulations. The SPN microseminar was delivered by subject matter experts in neuroscience, mathematics, multi-agent swarm robotics, and education. The objective of this research was to determine if taking an interdisciplinary approach to high school education would enhance the students learning experiences in fields such as neuroscience, robotics, or computer science. This study found an improvement in student engagement for neuroscience by 16.6%, while interest in robotics and computer science improved respectively by 2.7% and 1.8%. The majority of students (64%) strongly agreed that they enjoyed learning from an interdisciplinary team of experts and 70% strongly agreed that the microseminar emphasized the need to have instruction teams with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The curriculum materials, developed for the SPN microseminar, can be used by high school teachers to further evaluate interdisciplinary instructions across life and physical sciences and computer science.

Finite element optimization of Pratt trusses using trial and error

Steel production is considered one of the most material and energy-consuming industries, and using less energy is considered vital to promote environmental sustainability. Steel is used as the main building material in the construction of factories, hangars, and workshops in the form of trusses. A truss system is a set of structural elements connected at pin joints , with different types, shapes, and weights. Optimizing truss systems for max strength and minimum weight is a sustainable approach to reducing steel production and promoting environmental sustainability. In this paper 27 Pratt trusses were optimized by trial and error using finite element analysis (FEM) to predict the optimum topology for various cross-sections. Correlations between the span length, cross-sectional area, and height of the trusses were developed to conclude the ideal topology of the Pratt truss that gives minimum compression and tension stresses. The effect of topology on the reaction forces was also addressed. Results showed that the optimum horizontal span length between joints ranged between 3.4 and 3.6 m for minimal compressive stresses and minimum horizontal and vertical reaction forces at supports, and from 3.0 to 3.6 m for minimal tensile stresses .

A novel strong duality-based reformulation for trilevel infrastructure models in energy systems development

We explore the class of trilevel equilibrium problems with a focus on energy-environmental applications and present a novel single-level reformulation for such problems, based on strong duality. To the best of our knowledge, only one alternative single-level reformulation for trilevel problems exists. This reformulation uses a representation of the bottom-level solution set, whereas we propose a reformulation based on strong duality. Our novel reformulation is compared to this existing formulation, discussing both model sizes and computational performance. In particular, we apply this trilevel framework to a power market model, exploring the possibilities of an international policymaker in reducing emissions of the system. Using the proposed methods, we are able to obtain globally optimal solutions for a five-node case study representing the Nordic countries and assess the impact of a carbon tax on the electricity production portfolio. This study presents an analysis of the use of Evolutionary Algorithms for determining the optimal operating strategy of gas transmission networks that minimize the total operating cost of the gas network and identify the optimal demand and supply flows. In comparison with water distribution networks, gas transmission networks, are complex due to their use of compressor equipment and the large lengths and diameters of their pipelines. The optimal operations model minimizes the gas purchase cost, while satisfying all system demands and other operating constraints in a network. The constraints of the gas network are flow continuity at nodes and energy relationships in pipelines, along with constraints associated with the contracted gas flow rate and pressure requirements at each node, and the power limits and flow requirements of *** heuristic algorithms, namely the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Differential Evolution Algorithm (DE), Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABC), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES), are applied to optimize the Belgium Gas Transmission Network. These are compared in terms of their computational burden, and the quality of the obtained solutions with respect to practical management concerns. Among the four algorithms, CMA-ES is found to be most efficient at achieving the global optimum, consistently meeting pressure and flow requirements, while conserving compressor power. © 2023, The Authors. In this paper, it is proposed a measure that quantifies the relational structure within and between groups that comprehend not only the analysis of disjoint groups or non-disjoint groups but also in fuzzy groups. This measure is based on the existing measure known as the EI index. The current EI index is a measure of homophily applied to networks with the presence of disjoint groups, although disjoint groups on a large scale rarely exist in many empirical networks. The new measure permits the expansion of the analysis of social networks, for several types of attributes, and thus generating previously untapped knowledge. Moreover, it is also proposed combining edges’ and nodes’ weights in the evaluation of the EI index. The new measure is tested in two networks in different contexts. The first one is a co-authorship network, where researchers, actors in the network, are divided according to the time of completion of the doctorate. The second network is formed by trade relations between countries of the American continent, where countries are grouped according to the Human Development Index. © 2021, CC BY.

Oil and gas industries within the energy sector are a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a primary driver of climate change and global warming. However, research on their efforts to combat this issue remains limited. This study investigates climate initiatives by five major oil companies, emphasizing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Analyzing 98,730 patents from 2000 to 2022, the results show that they collectively registered 871 CCUS-related patents. ExxonMobil leads with 359, followed by Shell, though 70 % of its patents are inactive. The primary technical fields of these five companies include technologies developed to capture and dispose of CO2, and to utilize a bio-feedstock approach in the oil refining and petrochemical industry. Our findings reveal that all five companies have strategically integrated CCUS into their business operations, forming partnerships with third-party emitters as partners and customers, and implementing efforts to lower the carbon burden of existing assets. These findings are expected to help with strategic decision-making, guiding targeted investments, and paving the way for future research and development endeavors in the rapidly evolving CCUS domain. © 2024 The Authors
