This paper describes a clustering process taking inspiration from the cemetery organization of ants. The goal of this paper is (i) to show the importance of the local interactions which allow to produces complex and emergent behavior. (ii) To propose a multi-robot systems in the field of clustering objects allowing optimization of: time of convergence, rate of occupation of the objects in the environment and final number of the clusters. And finally (iii) to propose another system with the use of cognitive robots instead of reactive robots in the same field of clustering objects with generic rules which can be used independently of the environment. Series of simulations enable us to discuss and validate the proposed approach.

An investigation into orientation preferences shown by actin fibres within ex-situ actin as imaged by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is described. Actin is a primary cytoskeletal component and is believed to play a vital role in cell structure. Actin structure images measured by AFM were analysed using automated pre-processing steps. These steps were identical for the production of an initial binary image, which was then processed by both Hough transformation and thinning. Results obtained question the validity of using the Hough transform approach, as bias could not easily be eliminated, and hence the Hough transform method was deemed to be unsuitable for this application and instead the thinning technique was used to identify and locate actin orientation within the AFM images. The results show that polymerised ex-situ actin fibres appears to display a bimodal distribution of orientation, with a 90 degree separation, with a significant co-efficient of bimodality of 0.656.

The paper reports on a novel method for reconstruction of cellular features including cell nuclei and cellular boundaries from actin tagged fluorescence confocal microscopy images. Such reconstruction can provide spatial context for subsequent quantitative analysis of changes to actin organisation and cell morphology in both controlled and stressed cell cultures. The proposed method is fully automatic and is formulated within active contour multiphase level set framework. The derived level set evolution PDEs combine previously proposed curvature and advection flows with propagation flow defined by specially designed set of geodesic distance maps. Additionally the proposed PDEs include additional components to impose known inclusion/exclusion topological constraints between cellular structures. The paper gives an overview of the proposed methodology as well as reports on initial results obtained for monolayer of human prostate cells (PNT2) culture visualised using acting tagged fluorescence confocal microscopy.

This paper describes an improved 3-D facial representation method capable of modeling different types of faces without any constraint from expression, age, gender, or ethnic origin. Using the proposed technique, a 3-D face can be represented by a low dimensional shape space vector (SSV) of the statistical shape model (SSM), which is calculated through a model-based surface registration process. This model-based surface registration method consists of two major processing stages, model building and hierarchical model fitting. A statistical shape model is first built using a set of training faces. Then the model is deformed to match the new face by a modified iterative closest point (ICP) scheme. The experimental results on real 3-D facial data show that the proposed method can reasonably interpret the articulation of 3-D faces.

Early recognition of patients at high risk for atrial fibrillation may help to minimize potential health risks. The detection of susceptibility to develop atrial fibrillation is thus a real clinical challenge. Whereas many studies have used the signal-averaged P wave, the aim of this work is to determine whether electrocardiographic parameters resulting from the analysis of the P wave in ECG recorded during sinus rhythm could be markers for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation susceptibility. Our idea was to compare the ECG in sinus rhythm from two populations: healthy people and patients subject to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. In addition to standard P wave parameters (P width, P-R interval,. . ), the Euclidean distance between beat-to-beat P waves, which has been rarely addressed in this context, was studied on lead V1. Significant differences between the healthy and the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation groups were obtained for various parameters. Moreover, a classification of the two groups based on the joint analysis of P width and P-R interval was suggested. This proposed classification could lead to an effective identification of patients at risk to develop atrial fibrillation.

Although SignWriting provides an intuitive notation system based on pictorial symbols to enable any sign based language in the world to be transcribed into a written form, it is a time consuming process for keyboard based input. To address the challenge of direct sign writing, the paper presents a human-computer-interaction system developed for recognition and visualisation of hand movements. The system is shown to be able to display the corresponding SignWriting symbols for various hand movements performed by two hands based on motion characteristics such as movement planes, movement directions, straight/curve movement paths, clockwise/anti-clockwise movements, and single/repeated movements.

Space missions are often equipped with several high definition sensors that can autonomously collect a potentially enormous amount of data. The bottleneck in retrieving these often precious datasets is the onboard data storing capability and the communication bandwidth, which limit the amount of data that can be sent back to Earth. In this paper, we propose a method based on the analysis of brain electrical activity to identify the scientific interest of experts towards a given image in a large set of images. Such a method can be used to efficiently create an abundant training set (images and whether they are scientifically interesting) with a considerably faster image presentation rate that can go beyond expert consciousness, with less interrogation time for experts and relatively high performance.
