The successful Rapid Prototyping of Application-Specific signal Processors (RASSP) program of the US Department of Defense (DARPA and Tri-Services) targets a 4/spl times/ improvement in cost and cycle time for design, prototyping, manufacturing, and support processes (relative to current practice). We describe a RASSP-based virtual prototyping process which incorporates parametric cost modeling into a hardware-less VHDL co-simulation and co-verification environment for rapid prototyping. We demonstrate this VHDL-based approach by applying it to the design of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. We present quantitative estimates of the improvements in prototyping time and cost.

Spatial multizone soundfield reproduction is a difficult problem, which has many potential applications. This paper provides a framework to recreate 2D spatial multizone soundfields using an array of loudspeakers. We derive the desired global soundfield by translating individual desired soundfields to a single global co-ordinate system and applying appropriate angular window functions. We reveal some of the fundamental limits of 2D multizone soundfield reproduction. We show that the ability of multizone reproduction is dependent on (i) maximum radius of multizones, (ii) window length (size, and nature), and (iii) radial distance to the furthermost zone. We illustrate the framework by designing and simulating a two dimensional two zone soundfield.

In this paper, robust multiple model-based LSDP (Loop-Shaping Design Procedure) controller is proposed for a SISO system where each linear submodel is represented in the form of a SISO ARX (Auto Regressive with exogenous input) Laguerre model. The proposed controller guarantees robustness in term of stability and reference tracking of the SISO system in presence of parametric uncertainties. Simulation example on the SISO CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) Benchmark is given to show the efficiency and the robustness of the proposed controller in handling the parametric uncertainties of the process.

High-resolution images of neutron-induced transient upsets in charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are analysed as an analogue of single-event upsets (SEEs) in memory devices. In particular, we investigate the relationship between the mean and variance of the event size distribution in the CCD images. Over the range of upset thresholds of practical interest a consistent form for this relationship is observed across different CCD types and resolutions and is found to be similar for SEE-inducing neutron beams with different energy spectra. This information is applied to a technique for inferring the statistics of multiple bit upsets (MBUs) from data sets derived from accelerated testing of memory devices. The technique is used successfully to infer the statistics of MBUs in a synchronous DRAM, without recourse to a physical bit map.

Although SignWriting provides an intuitive notation system based on pictorial symbols to enable any sign based language in the world to be transcribed into a written form, it is a time consuming process for keyboard based input. To address the challenge of direct sign writing, the paper presents a human-computer-interaction system developed for recognition and visualisation of hand movements. The system is shown to be able to display the corresponding SignWriting symbols for various hand movements performed by two hands based on motion characteristics such as movement planes, movement directions, straight/curve movement paths, clockwise/anti-clockwise movements, and single/repeated movements.

This paper presents a cursive Arabic text recognition system. The system decomposes the document image into test line images and extracts a set of simple statistical features from a one-pixel width window which is sliding a cross that text line. It then injects the resulting feature vectors to Hidden Markov Models. The proposed system is applied to a data corpus which includes Arabic text of more than 600 A4-size sheets typewritten in multiple computergenerated fonts.

Because of its high computational complexity, the process of motion estimation has become a bottleneck problem in many video applications, such as mobile video terminals and software-based video codecs. This has motivated the development of a number of fast motion estimation techniques. This paper briefly reviews reduced complexity motion estimation techniques and classifies them into five categories. It then presents the results of a comparative study across all categories. The aim of this study is to provide the reader with a feel of the relative performance of the categories, with particular attention to the important trade-off between computational complexity and prediction quality. © 2003 IEEE.

Depth images are often presented at a lower spatial resolution, either due to limitations in the acquisition of the depth or to increase compression efficiency. As a result, upsampling low-resolution depth images to a higher spatial resolution is typically required prior to depth image based rendering. In this paper, depth enhancement and up-sampling techniques are proposed using a graph-based formulation. In one scheme, the depth is first upsampled using a conventional method, then followed by a graph-based joint bilateral filtering to enhance edges and reduce noise. A second scheme avoids the two-step processing and upsamples the depth directly using the proposed graph-based joint bilateral upsampling. Both filtering and interpolation problems are formulated as regularization problems and the solutions are different from conventional approaches. Further, we also studied operations on different graph structures such as star graph and 8-connected graph. Experimental results show that the proposed methods produce slightly more accurate depth at the full resolution with improved rendering quality of intermediate views.

Space missions are often equipped with several high definition sensors that can autonomously collect a potentially enormous amount of data. The bottleneck in retrieving these often precious datasets is the onboard data storing capability and the communication bandwidth, which limit the amount of data that can be sent back to Earth. In this paper, we propose a method based on the analysis of brain electrical activity to identify the scientific interest of experts towards a given image in a large set of images. Such a method can be used to efficiently create an abundant training set (images and whether they are scientifically interesting) with a considerably faster image presentation rate that can go beyond expert consciousness, with less interrogation time for experts and relatively high performance.

Recording and reproduction of spatial sound fields over a large area is an unresolved problem in acoustic signal processing. This is due to the the inherent restriction in recording higher order harmonic components using practically realizable microphone arrays. As the frequency increases and as the region of interest becomes large the number of microphones needed in effective recording increases beyond practicality. In this paper, we show how to use higher order microphones, distributed in a large area, to record and accurately reconstruct 2D spatial sound fields. We use sound field coefficient translation between origins to combine distributed field recording to a single sound field over the entire region. We use simulation examples in (i) interior and (ii) exterior fields to corroborate our design.
