The classic Hegselmann-Krause (HK) model for opinion dynamics consists of a set of agents on the real line, each one instructed to move, at every time step, to the mass center of the agents within a fixed distance R. In this work, we investigate the effects of noise in the continuous-time version of the model as described by its mean-field Fokker-Planck equation. In the presence of a finite number of agents, the system exhibits a phase transition from order to disorder as the noise increases. We introduce an order parameter to track the phase transition and resolve the corresponding phase diagram. The system undergoes a phase transition for small R but none for larger R. Based on the stability analysis of the mean-field equation, we derive the existence of a forbidden zone for the disordered phase to emerge. We also provide a theoretical explanation for the well-known 2R conjecture, which states that, for a random initial distribution in a fixed interval, the final configuration consists of clusters separated by a distance of roughly 2R. Our theoretical analysis confirms previous simulations and predicts properties of the noisy HK model in higher dimension. © 2016 IEEE.

Dynamical properties of particulate composites derived from ultradense stealthy hyperuniform sphere packings

Stealthy hyperuniform (SHU) many-particle systems are distinguished by a structure factor that vanishes not only at zero wavenumber (as in "standard" hyperuniform systems) but also across an extended range of wavenumbers near the origin. We generate disordered SHU packings of identical and ‘nonoverlapping’ spheres in d-dimensional Euclidean space using a modified collective-coordinate optimization algorithm that incorporates a soft-core repulsive potential between particles in addition to the standard stealthy pair potential. Compared to SHU packings without soft-core repulsions, these SHU packings are ultradense with packing fractions ranging from 0.67-0.86 for d = 2 and 0.47-0.63 for d = 3, spanning a broad spectrum of structures depending on the stealthiness parameter χ. We consider two-phase media composed of hard particles derived from ultradense SHU packings (phase 2) embedded in a matrix phase (phase 1), with varying stealthiness parameter χ and packing fractions . Our main objective is the estimation of the dynamical physical properties of such two-phase media, namely, the effective dynamic dielectric constant and the time-dependent diffusion spreadability, which is directly related to nuclear magnetic relaxation in fluid-saturated porous media. We show through spreadability that two-phase media derived from ultradense SHU packings exhibit faster interphase diffusion due to the higher packing fractions achievable compared to media obtained without soft-core repulsion. The imaginary part of the effective dynamic dielectric constant of SHU packings vanishes at a small wavenumber, implying perfect transparency for the corresponding wavevectors. While a larger packing fraction yields a smaller transparency interval, we show that it also displays a reduced height of the attenuation peak. Threshold and decay properties of transient isolated turbulent band in plane Couette flow

By direct numerical simulations of the plane Couette flow (PCF) in a large computational domain, it is shown that an isolated turbulent band decays monotonically at low Reynolds numbers but experiences transient growth before the eventual relaminarization at moderate Reynolds numbers. The lower bound Reynolds number of the transient-growth regime is determined as 286. The width, length, and tilt angle of the iso- lated band structure are defined based on the disturbance kinetic energy in the mid-plane, and the geometric characteristics of the band can be described with a tilted rectangle. It is illustrated that before its eventual fragmentation, the isolated turbulent band decays in a style of longitudinal contraction, where the center, width, and tilt angle of the band keep almost constant but the band length contracts with a statistically constant velocity.

Spectral embedding and spectral clustering are common methods for non-linear dimensionality reduction and clustering of complex high dimensional datasets. In this paper we provide a diffusion based probabilistic analysis of algorithms that use the normalized graph Laplacian. Given the pairwise adjacency matrix of all points in a dataset, we define a random walk on the graph of points and a diffusion distance between any two points. We show that the diffusion distance is equal to the Euclidean distance in the embedded space with all eigenvectors of the normalized graph Laplacian. This identity shows that characteristic relaxation times and processes of the random walk on the graph are the key concept that governs the properties of these spectral clustering and spectral embedding algorithms. Specifically, for spectral clustering to succeed, a necessary condition is that the mean exit times from each cluster need to be significantly larger than the largest (slowest) of all relaxation times inside all of the individual clusters. For complex, multiscale data, this condition may not hold and multiscale methods need to be developed to handle such situations.

Correlations in interacting electron liquids: Many-body statistics and hyperuniformity

Disordered hyperuniform many-body systems are exotic states of matter with novel optical, transport, and mechanical properties. These systems are characterized by an anomalous suppression of large-scale density fluctuations compared to ordinary liquids. The structure factor of disordered hyperuniform systems often obeys the scaling relation S(k)∼Bkα with B,α>0 in the limit k→0. Ground states of d-dimensional free fermionic gases, which are fundamental models for many metals and semiconductors, are key examples of quantum disordered hyperuniform states with important connections to random matrix theory. However, the effects of electron-electron interactions as well as the polarization of the electron liquid on hyperuniformity have not been explored thus far. In this paper, we systematically address these questions by deriving the analytical small-k behaviors (and, associated, α and B) of the total and spin-resolved structure factors of quasi-one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional electron liquids for varying polarizations and interaction parameters. We validate that these equilibrium disordered ground states are hyperuniform, as dictated by the fluctuation-compressibility relation. Interestingly, free fermions, partially polarized interacting fermions, and fully polarized interacting fermions are characterized by different values of the small-k scaling exponent α and coefficient B. In particular, partially polarized fermionic liquids exhibit a unique form of multihyperuniformity, in which the net configuration exhibits a stronger form of hyperuniformity (i.e., larger α) than each individual spin component. The detailed theoretical analysis of such small-k behaviors enables the construction of corresponding equilibrium classical systems under effective one- and two-body interactions that mimic the pair statistics of quantum electron liquids. By analyzing the momentum distribution obtained from path integral and phonon calculations we find that the protons in hexagonal ice experience an anisotropic quasiharmonic effective potential with three distinct principal frequencies that reflect molecular orientation. Due to the importance of anisotropy, anharmonic features of the environment cannot be extracted from existing experimental distributions that involve the spherical average. The full directional distribution is required, and we give a theoretical prediction for this quantity that could be verified in future experiments. Within the quasiharmonic context, anharmonicity in the ground-state dynamics of the proton is substantial and has quantal origin, a finding that impacts the interpretation of several spectroscopies.

The problem of model selection arises in a number of contexts, such as subset selection in linear regression, estimation of structures in graphical models, and signal denoising. This paper studies non-asymptotic model selection for the general case of arbitrary (random or deterministic) design matrices and arbitrary nonzero entries of the signal. In this regard, it generalizes the notion of incoherence in the existing literature on model selection and introduces two fundamental measures of coherence- termed as the worst-case coherence and the average coherence-among the columns of a design matrix. It utilizes these two measures of coherence to provide an in-depth analysis of a simple, model-order agnostic one-step thresholding (OST) algorithm for model selection and proves that OST is feasible for exact as well as partial model selection as long as the design matrix obeys an easily verifiable property, which is termed as the coherence property. One of the key insights offered by the ensuing analysis in this regard is that OST can successfully carry out model selection even when methods based on convex optimization such as the lasso fail due to the rank deficiency of the submatrices of the design matrix. In addition, the paper establishes that if the design matrix has reasonably small worst-case and average coherence then OST performs near-optimally when either (i) the energy of any nonzero entry of the signal is close to the average signal energy per nonzero entry or (ii) the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement system is not too high. Finally, two other key contributions of the paper are that (i) it provides bounds on the average coherence of Gaussian matrices and Gabor frames, and (ii) it extends the results on model selection using OST to low-complexity, model-order agnostic recovery of sparse signals with arbitrary nonzero entries. One of the main challenges in modeling massive stars to the onset of core collapse is the computational bottleneck of nucleosynthesis during advanced burning stages. The number of isotopes formed requires solving a large set of fully-coupled stiff ordinary differential equations (ODEs), making the simulations computationally intensive and prone to numerical instability. To overcome this barrier, we design a nuclear neural network (NNN) framework with multiple hidden layers to emulate nucleosynthesis calculations and conduct a proof-of-concept to evaluate its performance. The NNN takes the temperature, density and composition of a burning region as input and predicts the resulting isotopic abundances along with the energy generation and loss rates. We generate training sets for initial conditions corresponding to oxygen core depletion and beyond using large nuclear reaction networks, and compare the predictions of the NNNs to results from a commonly used small net. We find that the NNNs improve the accuracy of the electron fraction by 280 − 660 % and the nuclear energy generation by 250 − 750 %, consistently outperforming the small network across all timesteps. They also achieve significantly better predictions of neutrino losses on relatively short timescales, with improvements ranging from 100 − 106 %. While further work is needed to enhance their accuracy and applicability to different stellar conditions, integrating NNN trained models into stellar evolution codes is promising for facilitating large-scale generation of core-collapse supernova (CCSN) progenitors with higher physical fidelity. © 2025, CC BY.

The first computer implementation of the Dantzig-Fulkerson- Johnson cutting-plane method for solving the traveling salesman problem, written by Martin, used subtour inequalities as well as cutting planes of Gomory’s type. The practice of looking for and using cuts that match prescribed templates in conjunction with Gomory cuts was continued in computer codes of Miliotis, Land, and Fleischmann. Gr¨otschel, Padberg, and Hong advocated a different policy, where the template paradigm is the only source of cuts;furthermore, they argued for drawing the templates exclusively from the set of linear inequalities that induce facets of the TSP polytope. These policies were adopted in the work of Crowder and Padberg, in the work of Gr¨otschel and Holland, and in the work of Padberg and Rinaldi;their computer codes produced the most impressive computational TSP successes of the nineteen eighties. Eventually, the template paradigm became the standard frame of reference for cutting planes in the TSP. The purpose of this paper is to describe a technique for finding cuts that disdains all understanding of the TSP polytope and bashes on regardless of all prescribed templates. Combining this technique with the traditional template approach was a crucial step in our solutions of a 13,509-city TSP instance and a 15,112-city TSP instance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
