In this paper, we present a polynomial-complexity algorithm to construct a special orthogonal matrix for the deterministic remote state preparation (DRSP) of an arbitrary n-qubit state, and prove that if n > 3, such matrices do not exist. Firstly, the construction problem is split into two sub-problems, i.e., finding a solution of a semi-orthogonal matrix and generating all semi-orthogonal matrices. Through giving the definitions and properties of the matching operators, it is proved that the orthogonality of a special matrix is equivalent to the cooperation of multiple matching operators, and then the construction problem is reduced to the problem of solving an XOR linear equation system, which reduces the construction complexity from exponential to polynomial level. Having proved that each semi-orthogonal matrix can be simplified into a unique form, we use the proposed algorithm to confirm that the unique form does not have any solution when n > 3, which means it is infeasible to construct such a special orthogonal matrix for the DRSP of an arbitrary n-qubit state. © 2023, CC BY.

A Feasibility Assessment Study to Procure Maximum Flexibility from Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

Exploiting the flexibility of end-users as a new source of ancillary services in the power system has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In particular, swimming pool heat pumps (SPHPs) are known as one of the best flexible resources in buildings. However, they can be flexible only for a certain number of hours throughout a day due to the comfort constraints of the residents. In this study, a novel approach is proposed to determine a group of suitable contract hour sets (CHSs) to procure maximum flexibility of SPHPs for trading in the regulation market while respecting the comfort of the residents. The main advantage of these CHSs is the certainty in response to flexibility requests. This approach consists of three main steps. In the first step, a stochastic mixed-integer linear program (SMILP) is proposed to find the optimal operation of an SPHP that has agreed to provide flexibility in the CHS program. This model takes into account the uncertainties of electricity prices, ambient temperature, initial state of the system and utilizing endusers’ flexibility in the regulation market. In the second step, a metric is proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of each CHS using the optimization results obtained in the first step. Finally, in the third step, an algorithm is proposed to identify a group of the most efficient CHSs using the calculated indices for different CHSs. The proposed approach is validated by running comprehensive simulation studies for a summerhouse with an indoor swimming pool equipped with a heat pump (HP). Also, the proposed method’s efficiency is discussed, and a cost-benefit analysis is performed to examine the feasibility of these CHSs from a financial viewpoint. An artifact-free ECG is essential during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to decide adequate therapy. Chest compressions (CCs) cause artifacts that alter the ECG waveform. This study analyzes the effectiveness of CPR artifact suppression filters to restore the ECG. For that purpose, artificial mixtures of artifact-free ECGs and CPR artifacts mixed at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRin) were used. Several configurations of three state-of-the-art filters were compared: Least Mean Squares (LMS), Recursive Least Squares (RLS) and Kalman. Performance was evaluated by comparing the artifact-free ECGs and the filtered ECGs in terms of the restored SNR (SNRres) and the Pearson's Correlation coefficient (PCC). RLS was the best option with a mean SNRres of 3.3 dB at the optimal working point, slightly above the LMS algorithm in terms of SNRres. The similarity of the restored and the clean ECG increased with SNRin, obtaining PCC values above 0.6 for SNRin > -5 dB. In conclusion, suitable filtering methods to restore ECG waveforms during CPR were proposed, that would enhance the reliability of the ECG analysis during CCs. © 2022 Creative Commons.

Unbiased Estimation using Underdamped Langevin Dynamics

In this work we consider the unbiased estimation of expectations w.r.t. probability measures that have non-negative Lebesgue density, and which are known point-wise up-to a normalizing constant. We focus upon developing an unbiased method via the underdamped Langevin dynamics, which has proven to be popular of late due to applications in statistics and machine learning. Specifically in continuous-time, the dynamics can be constructed so that as the time goes to infinity they admit the probability of interest as a stationary measure. In many cases, time-discretized versions of the underdamped Langevin dynamics are used in practice which are run only with a fixed number of iterations. We develop a novel scheme based upon doubly randomized estimation as in [17, 19], which requires access only to time-discretized versions of the dynamics. The proposed scheme aims to remove the dicretization bias and the bias resulting from running the dynamics for a finite number of iterations. We prove, under standard assumptions, that our estimator is of finite variance and either has finite expected cost, or has finite cost with a high probability. Considering the estimated prevalence reported by recent studies on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and the heavy demand caused by ASD people on families and on educational, social, and medical services, there is a significant and increasing need for effective and efficient care strategies able not only to ensure that ASD persons achieve optimal outcomes and improve their quality of life, but also to support all involved professionals, families, caregivers, and social networks. The potential benefit of ICT-based approach in ASD treatment has been testified by recent literature results regarding, e.g., the exploitation of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in assistive and cognitive rehabilitation tools. In this position paper we sketch our enlarged vision of ICT-based personalized continuous integrated ASD care services designed under a Socio-Technical (ST) approach and supporting not only ASD treatment but all involved stakeholders, their activities and needs, as well as the interaction among them. The resulting complexity of such overall ST system, the heterogeneity of its components in terms of activities, involved stakeholders, contexts of use (e.g., clinical setting, home setting, schools), and services (e.g., medical guidance, crisis management, real-time monitoring), as well as the necessity for an evolutionary vision of the system and its offered services, demand for a strong unifying conceptual tool around which all system aspects harmonize and cooperate in smart ways for achieving an individual-based continuous care service. The ongoing monitoring of human activities has several applications in digital health. However, precisely identifying activities in medical settings is difficult because of the intricate nature of actions and patient differences. This study presents a sophisticated approach using deep learning to combine accelerometer and ECG data from wearable devices to identify clinical activities. The suggested approach involves using a dual-stream convolutional-recurrent neural network to capture spatial and temporal patterns accurately. An assessment was carried out using a dataset that is accessible to the public, including records of activities undertaken by both healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with pneumoconiosis. An analysis was conducted on five deep learning architectures, which included convolutional, recurrent, and bidirectional recurrent networks. The results demonstrated that bidirectional gated recurrent units exhibited the most fantastic accuracy, ranging from 97% to 99%, for both the healthy and sick categories. This performance is significantly above that of the long short-term memory and convolutional neural network models. The results indicate that combining convolutional feature extraction and bidirectional sequential modeling allows for the effective learning of valuable features from multi-modal clinical time-series data. The results enhance the monitoring of human activities in clinical settings by combining specific deep neural networks designed for mobile health applications.

In this work, we investigate the security performance of an underlay cognitive radio network (CRN) with ambient backscatter communication (AmBC), where a backscattering device (BD) shares the spectrum and the receivers with the secondary user. Different from the related work, we consider a secondary user transmitter (ST) with multiple antenna in an AmBC-CRN with multiple receivers and multiple passive eavesdroppers. The ST performs joint antenna-user selection to enhance its security performance and overcome the performance degradation caused by BD interference. Considering the Nakagami-m fading model, closed-form expressions are derived for the secrecy outage probability for both the ST and the BD transmissions. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to validate the derived closed-form expressions. Numerical results show that employing joint antenna-user selection enhances the ST security performance by exploiting antenna and user diversity.

The formal study of computer malware was initiated in the seminal work of Fred Cohen in the mid-80s who applied elements of Computation Theory in the investigation of the theoretical limits of using the Turing Machine formal model of computation in detecting viruses. Cohen gave a simple but realistic, formal, definition of the characteristic actions of a computer virus as a Turing Machine that replicates itself and proved that detecting this behaviour, in general. is an undecidable problem. In this paper, we complement Cohen's approach by providing a simple generalization of his definition of a computer virus so as to model any type of malware behaviour and showing that the malware/nonmalware classification problem is, again, undecidable. Most importantly, beyond Cohen's work, our work provides a generic theoretical framework for studying anti-malware applications and identifying, at an early stage, before their deployment, several of their inherent vulnerabilities which may lead to the construction of zero-day exploits and malware strains with stealth properties. To this end, we show that for any given formal system, which can be seen as an anti-malware formal model, there are infinitely many, effectively constructible, programs for which no proof can be produced by the formal system that they are either malware or non-malware programs. Moreover, infinitely many of these programs are, indeed, malware programs which evade the detection powers of the given formal system. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
