The complexity of parallel PDE-based simulations continues to increase as multimodel, multiphysics, and multi-institutional projects become widespread. A goal of component - based software engineering in such large-scale simulations is to help manage this complexity by enabling better interoperability among various codes that have been independently developed by different groups. The Common Component Architecture (CCA) Forum is defining a component architecture specification to address the challenges of high-performance scientific computing. In addition, several execution frameworks, supporting infrastructure, and general-purpose components are being developed. Furthermore, this group is collaborating with others in the high-performance computing community to design suites of domain-specific component interface specifications and underlying implementations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

It is generally believed that the queueing behavior of an arrival process is most sensitive to its first and second order statistics. In this paper, we show that this is not generally true. We consider the queueing behavior of two classes of sources. The first class is the superposition of multiple discrete autoregressive sources of order 1 (referred to as DAR(1) sources), and the second class is a single DAR(1) source having the same first and second order statistics as the superposed source. In particular, we show that in the homogeneous case, the mean queue lengths of the two models are identical, but the queue length variances of the two models are significantly different depending on the correlation of individual sources.

Toxicity in a water column following the stratification of a cyanobacterial population development in a calm lake

Cyanobacteria, including the genera Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, and Oscillatoria, are known to release or have the potential to release phycotoxins into the water. Indeed, there are documented cases of both animal and human intoxication. Data obtained from field observations and laboratory experiments demonstrate a correlation between the development of the cyanobacterial population and the level of phycotoxin present in the water, though it should be noted that not all cyanobacterial blooms are toxic. The development of cyanobacterial populations is described by a dynamical model which accounts for factors that include algal growth, degradation, and light-driven buoyancy under the assumption of an isothermal, calm, and nutrient-abundant lake. A semiempirical mathematical model for water-column toxicity is developed and is used in conjunction with an improved result for the density of the cyanobacteria population obtained from the dynamical model. Light transfer through the water column, light absorption, the implication of the differentiated attenuation of light by the water, and its diurnal effect on the cyanobacteria population is considered. The result of which is a plausible description of the seasonal development of cyanobacteria populations and of the toxicity within the water body. © Oxford University Press 1999.

In this paper we will present a general purpose h-p finite element (or spectral/hp element) code for solving the Navier-Stokes equations in moving computational domains without the need for remeshing. The code uses Galerkin and discontinuous Galerkin projections and a high-order trial basis suitable for polymorphic subdomains. Using these techniques we model fluid/structure interactions with large structural deformation without remeshing while maintaining both numerical accuracy and convergence. Specific case studies we present include simulations of flow past an `energy-harvesting eel', a 3D flow in a micro-pump, and arterial flows.

Floating-point underflow is often regarded as either harmless or as an indication that the computational algorithm is in need of scaling. A counterexample to this view is given of a function for which contour plotting is difficult due to floating-point underflow. The function arose as an asymptotic solution to a model problem in turbulent combustion in which two chemical species (fuel and oxidizer) mix and react in a vortex field. Scaling is not a viable option because of extreme sensitivity to a small physical parameter. Standard graphics software packages produce erroneous contours without any indication of difficulty. This example provides support for considering symmetric level-index arithmetic, a new form of computer arithmetic which is immune to underflow and overflow.< >

The capacity of the Poisson channel is derived with a constraint imposed on the L(p) norm parallel-to chi(t)parallel-to (p) of the encoder intensity-chi;that is, 1 less-than-or-equal-to p less-than-or-equal-to infinity is fixed and it is supposed that parallel-to chi(t)parallel-to(p) less-than-or-equal-to Q for all t is-an-element-of [0, T] and some Q greater-than-or-equal-to 0. Formulae are given for the capacity which establish previously known results for p = 1, p = 2, and p = infinity to be part of a system of capacity problems with common form and solution. These formulae apply with or without causal feedback and whether or not the encoder intensity is OOK-constrained.

We have been developing a novel method for systematizing the concepts behind the information stored in many disparate databases containing materials test data. The conceptual structure produced will be used as a basis for the development of software systems which integrate engineers' access to many different databases. The major problems and the reason why the meanings of the concepts require explicit structuring are that (a) the everyday vocabulary used is ambiguous, (b) the same data item will have many valid names, (c) similar information is obtained by different laboratories using different methods and different scientific conceptual structures. There are also many organizational problems concerning responsibility, authority and maintenance. The complexity of the relationships between concepts requires a new technique of unusual sophistication in its handling of defaults and inheritance. © 1992 ASTM International. All rights reserved.

Two objections expressed by Kandler (1992) to our results in a recent article (Visser and Molenaar 1992) are discussed. We argue that, although we did not use all data available from the fir stands under consideration, inclusion of the other measurements would not have changed our conclusions. We also point out that, contrary to Kandler's remark, deposition of pollutants (wet rather than dry deposition) may not be ignored as a potential stress factor in the Bavarian Forest. For. The main aim of this book is to present a broader view of scientific software than has been common in the past. The provision of scientific software is no longer a matter of just writing 'good computer programs', but rather it is concerned with the development of an integrated software system wI-,ich offers the user facilities which approach all that he needs in terms of speed, accuracy and convenience. This means that due account must, for example, be taken of the high-speed computing capabilities of parallel processors, the exact computing features of symbolic mathematical systems, the presentational potentialities of computer graphics, and the advisory aspects of knowledge-based and expert systems. When suites of numerical software programs or routines are supported by such ranges of facilities, then they can be justly described as 'scientific software systems', and that is why we have adopted such a title here. The assembly of this book was a direct consequence of the running of a one-day international symposium, with the same broad aim of advocating a 'systems approach', under the title 'Scientific Software and Systems'. This Symposium was held at the Royal Military College of Science (RMCS) in Shrivenham on July 11, 1988 and was attended by 85 people. A very busy but most enjoyable day included invited talks, poster presentations and demonstrations of software products, not to mention various social activi ties.

The study reported in this paper is an ongoing effort. We reported a preliminary analysis of the data in the paper. The current experiments varied the subjects to c- duct online group learning activities by the communication media such as email and threaded discussion. Although, we could have easily learned the impact of mobile devices in learning if we divided the subjects to use different hardware such as p- sonal computers, personal digital assistant, or mobile phones, we believe our findings will still be able to provide useful insights on the difficulties that the mobile learners will face in solving problems as a group. Our analysis result will also provide ba- line information on whether the traits of the successful or failed online groups are applicable to the mobile learners. For example, we expect the SMS will be a better medium to overcome the major problem of instant communication or the rapid propagation of the information as the mobile phones have built-in mechanism to remind the users of the incoming new messages and also the mobile phone users are expected to be interrupted for the incoming messages. However, we need further investigation of other problems, which hinder the optimum online group work. For example, ‘accuracy of the transferred information’ was identified as one of the pr- lems of using emails as the communication medium. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or SMS are more apt to deliver shorter messages than the typical emails.
