[Context] The inclusion of programming concepts in high school education has been emerging, since applying computing in high school education is a way to motivate and prepare students into the field of technology. [Objective] This work evaluates the teaching programming games for high school students based on different forms of distance education (online video lessons, broadcasted live or recorded, and tutorials in PDF). [Method] A case study was performed in the second half of 2014 with 30 high school students enrolled in an online game programming challenge. The students had access to the different formats of online lessons and they were monitored by tutors in a online learning environment. [Results] Over 75% of the students performed and sent all the activities requested in the study, suggesting that all investigated online formats are effective. However, 85% of students indicated their preference to use recorded video classes to learn programming. Finally, 100% of the students said that they would participate again in such challenge, showing the attractiveness of the game development. [Conclusions] We considered that online formats (specially recorded video) can be used to promote the development of games to introduce programming knowledge in high school education. However, the lessons learned (difficults found and improvement suggestions) should be taken in consideration to implement online solutions in large scale.

Tourism and Travel sector are improving services through the use of a large amount of data gathered from different sources. The ease access to reviews, rating and experiences from different tourists made the touristic planning rich and complex. Hence, a big challenge faced by tourism sector is to use the gathered data for detecting tourist preferences. In this work, we proposed a solution able to detecting tourist implicit preferences based on photos. We used emerging techniques such as Convolutional Neural Network and fuzzy logic to classify tourists in five categories. Finally, a set of photos were analyzed and the results reached over 82% on accuracy metric for all classifiers.

The idea of a Kripke semantics endowed with possibility/plausibility information is not new;in fact there are different approaches for that;see: [6], [13], [16], [19]. This paper follows the approach found in [6], but whereas [6] provides a fixed interpretation for connectives into [0,1] here we provide a characterization of a fuzzy semantics for connectives in such a way that the resulting fuzzy frames: K, T and D, are described precisely by the set of statements which also describes, respectively, the usual modal systems K, T and D. © 2011 IEEE.

Functional data analysis can be seriously impaired by abnormal observations, which can be classified as either magnitude or shape outliers based on their way of deviating from the bulk of data. Identifying magnitude outliers is relatively easy, while detecting shape outliers is much more challenging. We propose turning the shape outliers into magnitude outliers through data transformation and detecting them using the functional boxplot. Besides easing the detection procedure, applying several transformations sequentially provides a reasonable taxonomy for the flagged outliers. A joint functional ranking, which consists of several transformations, is also defined here. Simulation studies are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method using different functional depth notions. Interesting results are obtained in several practical applications. Applying Graph Theory and Mathematical-Computational Modelling to Study a Neurophysiological Circuit

The aim of the present study is to contribute to the knowledge about the functioning of the neuronal circuits. We built a mathematical-computational model using graph theory for a complex neurophysiological circuit consisting of a reverberating neuronal circuit and a parallel neuronal circuit, which could be coupled. Implementing our model in C++ and applying neurophysiological values found in the literature, we studied the discharge pattern of the reverberant circuit and the parallel circuit separately for the same input signal pattern, examining the influence of the refractory period and the synaptic delay on the respective output signal patterns. Then, the same study was performed for the complete circuit, in which the two circuits were coupled, and the parallel circuit could then influence the functioning of the reverberant. The results showed that the refractory period played an important role in forming the pattern of the output spectrum of a reverberating circuit. The inhibitory action of the parallel circuit was able to regulate the reverberation frequency, suggesting that parallel circuits may be involved in the control of reverberation circuits related to motive activities underlying precision tasks and perhaps underlying neural work processes and immediate memories.

Machine Learning for Prediction of Adverse Drug Reactions: Application to Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Introduction: The intensive care of neonates is associated with the entry of a large volume of data in their medical records. The treatment of this data can be done through Machine Learning: a tool capable of assisting in the detection and decision-making of a wide range of medical conditions, including adverse drug reactions (ADR). Objective: To train a prediction model to assist in the detection of adverse drug reactions in neonates admitted to an ICU. Methodology: observational study developed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a teaching hospital in Brazil. Clinical data were collected from daily pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, processed and analyzed by machine learning through libraries written in Python language. Results: Eight hundred and three neonates were included in the study, with a mean gestational age of 32.2 ± 4.2 weeks and mean birth weight of 1807.2 ± 936.6g. The incidence of ADR was 10.8%. Antimicrobials, especially aminoglycosides, were the most prescribed drugs for this population. An algorithm was trained and tested to predict ADR in the NICU, in which the metrics were precision (0.35) and recall (0.823), with specificity (80%) and sensitivity (67%). Conclusion: There is a high potential in the machine learning method to predict ADR in neonates admitted to an ICU. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present a data-driven approach to characterizing nonidentifiability of a model’s parameters and illustrate it through dynamic as well as steady kinetic models. By employing Diffusion Maps and their extensions, we discover the minimal combinations of parameters required to characterize the output behavior of a chemical system: a set of effective parameters for the model. Furthermore, we introduce and use a Conformal Autoencoder Neural Network technique, as well as a kernel-based Jointly Smooth Function technique, to disentangle the redundant parameter combinations that do not affect the output behavior from the ones that do. We discuss the interpretability of our data-driven effective parameters, and demonstrate the utility of the approach both for behavior prediction and parameter estimation. In the latter task, it becomes important to describe level sets in parameter space that are consistent with a particular output behavior. This paper examines the reproducibility of massive information analytics under particular factors. The paper proposes the 'performing Scalable Inference' technique to cope with scalability troubles and to exploit current big statistics platforms for efficient computing and statistics garage of the statistics. In particular, the paper describes how to perform leak-free, parallelizable visible analytics over massive datasets using present extensive records analytics frameworks such as Apache Flink. This method presents an automated manner to execute analytics that preserves reproducibility and the ability to make adjustments without re-running the entire technique. The paper also demonstrates how these analytics may help several real-world use instances, explore affected person cohorts for studies, and develop stratified patient cohorts for hospital therapy. In the end, the paper observes how the proposed method may be exercised within the real world. Actively scalable inference for massive information analytics is pivotal in optimizing decision-making and allocation of assets. Typically, such inferences are made based on information accumulated from numerous sources, databases, unstructured data, and different digital sources. So one can ensure scalability, a complete cloud-primarily based platform has to be hired. This solution will permit the ***, deploying the essential records series and evaluation algorithms are prime here. It could permit the platform to recognize the styles inside the statistics and discover any ability correlations or traits. Additionally, predictive analytics and system mastering strategies may be incorporated to provide insights into the results of the information. In the long run, by leveraging those techniques, the platform can draw efficient inferences and appropriately compare situations in an agile and green way.. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper addresses the low-dimensional embedding of sounds towards unsupervised auditory scene analysis. Summarizing long-time recordings by mapping them into low-dimensional space is an essential task in long-time environmental monitoring. In this paper, we propose a novel low-dimensional embedding system using an incremental embedding algorithm. To analyze long-time recordings, we design an incremental system consisting of recording, feature extraction, low-dimensional embedding, and visualization. Recently, many low-dimensional embedding methods for acoustic scenes have been studied; however, applicability of these methods to the long-time recording is not adequately evaluated. Thus, this paper describes the construction of the scene analysis system and evaluates the performance of this system. In this paper, we especially focus on two important viewpoints in long-time monitoring: incremental methods and effects of noisy data. To realize an incremental system, we use Self-Organizing Nebulous Growths (SONG), which can incrementally construct a low-dimensional embedding space. Also, in our experiments, we apply our system to bird song analysis under noise conditions. By the preliminary experiments using benchmark datasets, we discover noise sensitivity of our system and applicability to environmental monitoring.
