The number of devices in an operation room (OR) and the complexity of the components and the overall system increases continuously. Today's vendor-dependent integrated ORs are expensive and not able to handle this complexity because they can only form isolated solutions. Thus a device communication for medical devices among each other and to medical information systems has to be based on open and vendor-independent standards. In this paper we will present new standards for networked Point-of-Care medical devices that will be part of the IEEE 11073 family of standards. A service-oriented device communication is defined by means of an architecture definition, a transport specification called Medical Devices Profile for Web Services (MDPWS), and a Domain Information & Service Model. The new system will make the complexity of a comprehensive OR integration manageable and thereby improve patient's safety. The focus of this paper is on MDPWS that enables a device communication for medical requirements and safety issues, like safe data transmission that will typically be used for safe remote control (dual channel and safety context), data streaming, and compact transmission. The suitability of the concept has been shown by a demonstrator with over 20 real world OR devices from more than 10 vendors.

Software-defined networking (SDN) is a principle for the flexible configuration of networks, which recently has aroused an increasing interest of researchers and companies. Today, the operation and configuration of networks as well as their adaptation to changing requirements represent a major challenge if legacy network management protocols are used due to their inability to provide network-wide configuration. Compatibility issues with legacy protocols or even proprietary protocols have further contributed to hardly reconfigurable and inefficient networks and thus prepare the way for the new concept called SDN. SDN implementations are mainly in the data center today. Implementations will find their way into broader networking applications over the next few years. However, even automation networks with highest QoS requirements can benefit from SDN support by achieving significantly more devices that meet these requirements. Therefore, this paper addresses the emulation of SDN-supported automation networks to examine possible design options. Limitations and possibilities when using the popular and widely accepted SDN emulator Mininet are analyzed.

In this paper we describe a common problem when it comes to mutual authentication of devices in smart environments. Basically, there exist two approaches. In the brokered approach, two parties authenticate with the help of a common trusted party. However, this often introduces a single point of failure. The alternative approach lets the devices authenticate with each other directly, usually by exchanging a shared secret out of band. But this is only possible if both devices have the necessary user interface peripherals to establish an out-of-band channel. We will describe an abstract basic protocol to bridge the possible peripherals' gaps by authenticating indirectly with the help of nowadays basically omnipresent multimedia devices such as smart phones. After extending the proposed protocol for more complex use cases, we refine it to a practical authenticated key establishment protocol for indirect authentication. Finally we describe our freely available prototype implementation consisting of an internet-of-things-enabled light bulb and light switch and an Android app that comprise our proof of concept. © 2014 IEEE.

Surgical procedures become more and more complex and the number of medical devices in an operating room (OR) increases continuously. Today's vendor-dependent solutions for integrated ORs are not able to handle this complexity. They can only form isolated solutions. Furthermore, high costs are a result of vendor-dependent approaches. Thus we present a service-oriented device communication for distributed medical systems that enables the integration and interconnection between medical devices among each other and to (medical) information systems, including plug-and-play functionality. This system will improve patient's safety by making technical complexity of a comprehensive integration manageable. It will be available as open standards that are part of the IEEE 11073 family of standards. The solution consists of a service-oriented communication technology, the so called Medical Devices Profile for Web Services (MDPWS), a Domain Information & Service Model, and a binding between the first two mechanisms. A proof of this concept has been done with demonstrators of real world OR devices.

The definition of parameters of integrated circuit technologies is driven by technological constraints as well as by intended applications. In case of the latter, opposing criteria, like design delay, power consumptions and area, have to be considered. Common approaches focus usually on the analysis based on selected and isolated cells. However, this might not represent the exact impact of a technology parameter on actual designs. Hence, this work proposes a flow for the exploration of technology parameter values that considers the application in real designs. Additionally, the proposed approach allows the comparison of different technology generation with a reasonable effort. Results indicate an improvement of the predictions of up to 46 % in comparison to single cell analysis. Further, the applicability of the approach is successfully evaluated using a predictive technology based on Carbon nanotubes.

In this paper, a prototype to synchronize the Peer-to-Peer network Kad is presented. The approach bases on a deterministic algorithm, which is required for hard real-time applications, to synchronize the network in a decentralized manner. Existing industrial Ethernet solutions include and support real-time capable machine-to-machine communication in automation scenarios. However, the coordination of the communication and the synchronization to achieve hard real-time are managed by a central instance, leading to deficient resilience and scalability. Additionally, a centralized or hierarchical synchronization is required to enable the communication per se. The presented decentralized synchronization instead benefits from nodes helping to synchronize the network and bases on the decentralized structured Peer-to-Peer network Kad. However, the higher the number of helping nodes the higher is the time deviation on the nodes of the network, which contrary results in a higher time error. Therefore, a trade-off between synchronization performance and time error has to be determined to meet predefined constraints depending on the application scenario. Moreover, the individual clock drift of every device needs to be considered to define necessary re-synchronization intervals of the network. Theoretical values are compared to the measured values determined in experiments with 15 nodes. As a result of these experiments, the measured synchronization performance, which is the time needed to synchronize the complete network, confirms the theoretical worst case values. The result is a running prototype system, which is able to synchronize the network with a high performance in a decentralized manner. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach.

The use of Extensible Markup Language (XML) for data interchange became standard in most computer systems. The benefits of XML documents are their easy handling, dynamic adjustment to nearly all needs, availability of parsers for any programming language, and the human readability. Despite many advantages of XML, it is still primarily applied in software-based systems. The serious drawback of XML is the size of the document and the text-based parsing. Further, the dissemination of the Web service technology in automation demands very fast data processing especially in real-time scenarios. This implies the compactness of the data representation and fast parsing possibility. In such cases, hardware-based solutions are often used to speed up the process. Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) was developed to leverage the deployment of XML in deeply embedded systems. EXI provides very high XML compression rates without additional processing load. However, EXI parsing was only tested in software-based systems. As very fast processing speed is targeted in this work for, e.g., real-time systems, which software-based parsers most probably cannot achieve, we provide an investigation and the prototype implementation of the EXI parser in hardware and compare it to software-based solutions. © 2014 IEEE.

We propose an SMT-based system synthesis approach where the logic solver performs static binding and routing while the background theory solver computes global time-triggered schedules. In contrast to previous work, we assign additional time to the logic solver in order to refine the binding and routing such that the background theory solver is more likely to find a feasible schedule within a reasonable amount of time. We show by experiments that this coordination of the two solvers results in a considerable reduction of the overall synthesis time.

The positioning and tracing of multiple users is an important data source for ubiquitous assistance in smart environments and its superimposed intention recognition systems. Within application areas like elderly care or ambient assisted living, non-invasive, wireless, privacy preserving j technologies are indispensable. Device-free localization approaches (DFL) provide these advantages with no need for user-attached hardware. In our recent work we provide a passive RFID enabled and radio tomography based approach, which combines privacy and cost effectiveness. Within our previous proof of concepts only one user scenarios were investigated. An open problem within the DFL research is the recognition and distinction of multiple users. In this work we show related approaches and define methods and algorithms for multi user support. We conduct experiments in an indoor room DFL scenario for proof of concept and validation. We show that it is possible to recognize and distinct up to 3 users with reasonable precision.
