Recent research on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) has yielded devices capable to compete against both digital signal processors and general purpose processors. Due to their resources in terms of logical gates and processing speed, FPGAs have made their way into numerous new areas previously dominated by dedicated hardware architectures, i.e., ASICs, digital signal processors, and microcontrollers. This paper presents a case study in field of image processing in which the new FPGA generation allows for a system design that exhibits near-to-hardware performance at low system development costs. The system's high performance is due to application-specific hardware components that are attached to a soft-core processor; the design follows the hardware/software co-design guidelines. This standalone embedded system executes both general control tasks written in C/C++ and sophisticated image processing algorithms implemented in the hardware description language VHDL

This paper presents the implementation of a genetic algorithm based path planning on RoboCup's small-size league robots. The algorithm is adjusted to the resource constraints of micro controllers that are used in embedded environments. Because path planning on mobile robots is a continuous process, the path planning runs until the robot arrives its destination. Hereby, the path is updated to environmental changes, such as moving obstacles.

Dealing with uncertainty is an important issue in a broad range of research fields and industrial applications. For example with outer space missions or unmanned vehicles in perilous environs, today's and future systems have to adapt to changing environmental conditions. But high specialization of today's systems also results in decreased robustness and flexibility. These systems show high performance. But in dynamic environments, they lack flexibility as well as robustness. In case of failure or changing conditions, also referred to as uncertainty or uncertain events, flexibility and robustness are crucial. Based on the proverb "prevention is better than cure!", mechanisms have to be implemented in technical systems to diminish the contrary behavior of robustness and flexibility compared to specialization. A conceptual framework based on a library related to concurrent version systems is proposed. Every change and modification on the system configuration is minuted over time. Thereby, the ability to fall back on a stable system state in critical situations, traps or impasses assures robustness and survivability

In many application areas, robots most suitably employ classical PID controllers and the like. In the field of autonomous mobile robots, however, further adaptation features are required in order to adapt to dynamically changing environmental conditions. In recent contests, the particular research area of soccer-playing robots, called RoboCup, has observed the emergence of omnidirectional driven robots. Such drives consist of three independently controllable motors with which a robot can simultaneously perform both translational movements and rotations, which yield a significant advantage in soccer games. This paper describes how a Kohonen-feature-map-based neural network is able to learn the required capabilities and how to adapt to changing environmental conditions

In the RoboCup small-size league, the positions of the robots are commonly calculated via a camera mounted above the field and different kinds of artificial intelligence methods hosted on a PC outside the field. In this case, the robot's position must be predicted because of the various time delays until the position data arrived at the robot. This paper focuses on the use of local sensors attached to the robot, and a neural network to estimate the actual robot position. This paper shows how local sensors can compensate for the effect of latency times and how the actual robot position can be estimated. Slip and friction effects that cannot be measured with local sensors can be adjusted by a neutral network, for which the implementation is adapted to the low resources available on the robot.

Managing reconfigurable hardware resources at runtime is expected to be a new task for future operating systems. But due to the mixture of parallel and sequential parts of dynamically reconfigurable applications, it is not entirely clear so far, how to use and to program such systems. A new interpretation of dynamically reconfigurable applications is presented. It is shown, that the parallel computing concept of distributed object systems may be adapted for dynamically reconfigurable architectures. This approach answers many open questions concerning communication, interruption, and relocation of reconfigurable modules. It is explored by means of an extended Linux operating system in conjunction with a SystemC model of a dynamically reconfigurable FPGA

Ethernet-based broadband access network nodes like an IP DSLAM are required to provide many new Ethernet/IP-based features for, e.g., end user device autoconfiguration by DHCP, authentication and authorization based on IEEE 802.1X, and multicast distribution. At control plane, a lot of information exchange is needed to configure, administer, and control these features and services. Cost-effective access network and system structures highly depend on an efficient and optimized feature positioning. ACIP is a new access control and information protocol which enables optimized, cost-effective functional decomposition of features without loosing feature options and supports optimized feature positioning. It provides transport of configuration and control information in Ethernet networks, e.g., for providing DSL line identification used for DHCP relay agent option 82 to centralized systems and for transmitting control information to remotely control DSL user ports by a centralized 802.1X authentication mechanism. ACIP is designed for being as simple as possible and open for new extensions to provide future network control functions

Today, an increasing number of customers subscribes for a high bandwidth Internet access. But not only communication speed is demanded. Quality-of-service moves more and more into the customers' focus. Both carriers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have increasing requirements derived from new services they want to offer to their customers. We present a new hardware solution is presented, which can satisfy many of these upcoming demands. This solution is highly flexible and can be adapted to various applications. The MAC address translation - MPLS user network interface (MATMUNI) provides the functionality of MAC address translation (MAT), multi protocol label switching-user network interface (MPLS-UNI), and a traffic manager (TM). This way, a module implemented on a single FPGA offers a wide range of functionality in an access network for low costs and high flexibility. The selection of an FPGA as implementation target offers the possibility to adapt to future demands towards functionality. Moreover, the all functional elements work with wire speed. Only a negligible delay is inserted into the datapath

An anisotropic laser etching to the surface layer (n-GaN) of vertical-structured GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) associated with a transparent conducting layer (TCL) to release current crowding effect (CCE) for better light emission uniformity and higher optical efficiency is proposed and demonstrated. The theory behind the proposed scheme was verified by a two-dimensional device simulator (ISE-TCAD), which indicates that immune of CCE would be possible once an optimal combination of the concave-structured n-GaN layer and TCL has been achieved. In experiments, 40-mil LEDs with an anisotropic etching area of 800 μm in diameter, an etching depth of 1.75 μm at center, and a 300-nm-thick Indium-Zinc-Oxide (IZO) layer have been successfully prepared. Typical improvement in light output power by 26% at an injection current of 350 mA as compared to the one without anisotropic etching has been obtained. © 2006 IEEE.
