A novel process for fabricating high-power Vertical-structure Metallic substrate GaN-based light-emitting diodes (VM-LEDs) employing selective nickel electroplating and patterned laser lift-off (LLO) techniques was proposed. Advantages including the avoidance of metal-cutting process, easy in die size definition through laser spot control, and simplification of fabrication processes (i.e., fewer masks as well as less effort in wire bonding) were demonstrated. As compared to regular lateral-structure LEDs, the VM-LEDs experimentally show having an increase in light output power (Lop) (i.e., ΔLop/Lop) by 293.4% at 350 mA with a decrease in forward voltage from 3.73 V down to 3.32 V.

An anisotropic laser etching to the surface layer (n-GaN) of vertical-structured GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) associated with a transparent conducting layer (TCL) to release current crowding effect (CCE) for better light emission uniformity and higher optical efficiency is proposed and demonstrated. The theory behind the proposed scheme was verified by a two-dimensional device simulator (ISE-TCAD), which indicates that immune of CCE would be possible once an optimal combination of the concave-structured n-GaN layer and TCL has been achieved. In experiments, 40-mil LEDs with an anisotropic etching area of 800 μm in diameter, an etching depth of 1.75 μm at center, and a 300-nm-thick Indium-Zinc-Oxide (IZO) layer have been successfully prepared. Typical improvement in light output power by 26% at an injection current of 350 mA as compared to the one without anisotropic etching has been obtained.

Due to their layered approach, Networks-on-Chip (NoC) are a promising communication backbone in the field of heterogeneous dynamically reconfigurable systems. In this paper a future FPGA architecture is discussed having a hardwired NoC as an additional high-level routing resource. Instead of implementing on-chip interconnection with valuable reconfigurable resources, on top of this architecture, cost-efficient statically and dynamically reconfigurable systems can be built. The concept of such an FPGA is explored by means of an abstract SystemC model. This model not only implements the NoC but also permits a tile based dynamic reconfiguration. It will be shown, that this approach advances the research on operating system support for dynamic reconfiguration in a new way. © 2005 IEEE.

Summary form only given. The collaboration of countless tiny sensor nodes in a network promises an enormous potential of novel applications. Advances in miniaturization and integration of electronic and mechanical components will enable sensor nodes with a size of a few cubic millimeters in the near future. At the same time, an ongoing price decline will allow the deployment of sensor networks covering thousands of nodes and, as a consequence, replace conventional wired sensors in many areas. Besides application-specific tasks of a node, the entire network requires a conformance to dynamical system requirements. The development focus changes from the single result of a sensor node to the cumulative result of the network. Consequentially, the following requirements for the design and implementation process of sensor networks arise: (i) sensor networks have to be self-organizing, (ii) sensor nodes must perform tasks of network maintenance, (iii) cooperative processing of tasks should lead to more precise results and new application fields, (iv) sensor networks require security mechanisms that are adaptive to environmental conditions, (v) all algorithms and protocols must be optimized with respect to resources, i.e. energy. The key constraint is energy. While many research teams are investigating better means to store, save, or generate electrical energy, progress is still slow. The paper addresses the inherent limitations and arising research opportunities of wireless sensor networks, both in terms of hardware and software issues.

Partial dynamic reconfigurability of modern FPGAs holds the potential of realizing autonomous and highly flexible systems-on-chip (SoC). Current devices can be configured with several partial bitfiles and replace particular ones on demand. But these precompiled bitfiles seriously lack flexibility: they are hardly relocatable and not adjustable. In other words, they are tied to their original functional scope and location. This paper proposes an integration of the design flow onto the reconfigurable device itself to be capable of runtime reconfiguration and adaptation through modifications on the source code level. Thus, a network-on-chip (NoC) and a Linux operating system (OS) have been combined. The design flow is integrated into a feedback control system, which runs as an application under Linux. As a consequence, an evolvable platform emerges, which is capable of adapting autonomously to its dynamic environment and changing parameters

Today, industrial production machines must be highly flexible in order to competitively account for dynamic and unforeseen changes in the product demands. This paper shows that field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are especially suited to fulfil these requirements; FPGAs are very powerful, relatively inexpensive, and adaptable, since their configuration is specified in an abstract hardware description language. In addition to the benefits resulting from using an FPGA, the case study presented here shows how FPGAs can be used for implementing a sophisticated multiprocessor architecture. In the course of presentation, this paper furthermore argues that due to the excellent tool support and the availability of reusable functional modules (also known as intellectual properties) this approach can be adopted by almost any industrial hardware designer.

Software development for wireless sensor networks requires novel programming paradigms and technologies. This article describes the concept of a new service oriented software architecture for mobile sensor networks. With this architecture, a flexible, scalable programming of applications based on an adaptive middleware is possible. The middleware supports mechanisms for cooperative data mining, self-organization, networking, and energy optimization to build higher-level service structures. The purpose of our research activities is the development of a framework, which radically simplifies the development of software for sensor network applications. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper describes a hierarchical fuzzy steering controller approach to local navigation of an autonomous sensor equipped mobile robots. Two goals are considered simultaneously: obstacle avoidance, so that the robot is piloted safely in an unknown environment; and reaching an target point. A two-step approach to build a fuzzy system is presented. In the first stage signals are processed by conventional methods to get an output vector indicating the direction and the closeness of obstacles around. Stage two is a basic task steering controller, that is based on fuzzy logic. The modular structure of the first stage allows modifications on the robot. So there is no need for a redesign of the controller's architecture, when the controller is used in different applications. Adaptation to a new task is done simply by adjusting the controller to other conditions. Then the robustness of this controller is demonstrated in simulations by means of erroneous signals of the sensor modules. Finally the controller is used in combination with another basic task controller for 'Reaching an Aiming Point'. In a higher level a controller ascertains priority of the controllers and manages the resulting steering commands.
