We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO–Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10−15. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

A genomic database of all Earth’s eukaryotic species could contribute to many scientific discoveries;however, only a tiny fraction of species have genomic information available. In 2018, scientists across the world united under the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), aiming to produce a database of highquality reference genomes containing all ~1.5 million recognized eukaryotic species. As the European node of the EBP, the European reference Genome Atlas (ErGA) sought to implement a new decentralised, equitable and inclusive model for producing reference genomes. For this, ErGA launched a Pilot Project establishing the first distributed reference genome production infrastructure and testing it on 98 eukaryotic species from 33 European countries. Here we outline the infrastructure and explore its effectiveness for scaling high-quality reference genome production, whilst considering equity and inclusion. The outcomes and lessons learned provide a solid foundation for ErGA while offering key learnings to other transnational, national genomic resource projects and the EBP. © The Author(s) 2024, corrected publication 2024.

This paper presents a measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Events with exactly one electron, one muon and no hadronic jets are studied. The fiducial region in which the measurements are performed is inspired by searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos decaying to two-lepton final states. The selected events have moderate values of missing transverse momentum and the ‘stransverse mass’ variable $$m_{\textrm{T2}}$$ , which is widely used in searches for supersymmetry at the LHC. The ranges of these variables are chosen so that the acceptance is enhanced for direct $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production and suppressed for production via top quarks, which is treated as a background. The fiducial cross-section and particle-level differential cross-sections for six variables are measured and compared with two theoretical SM predictions from perturbative QCd calculations.

We report the results of a comprehensive copy number variant (CNV) reanalysis of 9171 exome sequencing datasets from 5757 families affected by a rare disease (rd). The data reanalysed was extremely heterogeneous, having been generated using 28 different enrichment kits by 42 different research groups across Europe partnering in the Solve-rd project. Each research group had previously undertaken their own analysis of the data but failed to identify disease-causing variants. We applied three CNV calling algorithms to maximise sensitivity, and rare CNVs overlapping genes of interest, provided by four partner European reference Networks, were taken forward for interpretation by clinical experts. This reanalysis has resulted in a molecular diagnosis being provided to 51 families in this sample, with ClinCNV performing the best of the three algorithms. We also identified partially explanatory pathogenic CNVs in a further 34 individuals. This work illustrates the value of reanalysing ES cold cases for CNVs. © The Author(s) 2024.

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ′±νℓ+ℓ−γ (ℓ(′)=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst) fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06 fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

A search for quantum black holes in electron+jet and muon+jet invariant mass spectra is performed with 140 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed invariant mass spectrum of lepton+jet pairs is consistent with Standard Model expectations. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross section times branching fractions for quantum black holes decaying into a lepton and a quark in a search region with invariant mass above 2.0 TeV. The resulting quantum black hole lower mass threshold limit is 9.2 TeV in the Arkani-Hamed-dimopoulos-dvali model, and 6.8 TeV in the randall-Sundrum model.

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment aτ. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb−1 of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μττ=1.03−0.05+0.06 assuming the standard model value for aτ. To measure aτ, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for aτ is −0.057

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of b quarks into b hadrons are measured using 36 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic tt¯ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary pp interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the b hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with p values varying from 5×10−4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from e+e− collider experiments in which the b quarks originate from a color singlet Z/γ*.

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36 nb−1 of p+Pb and 3.6 pb−1 of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with pTch>0.5 GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with pTjet>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, IpPb, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The IpPb values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with pTch>4 GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.
