The polarization of τ leptons is measured using leptonic and hadronic τ lepton decays in Z → τ⁺ τ⁻ events in proton-proton collisions at (Formula presented.) recorded by CMS at the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb⁻¹. The measured τ⁻ lepton polarization at the Z boson mass pole is P_τ(Z) = −0.144 ± 0.006 (stat) ± 0.014 (syst) = −0.144 ± 0.015, in good agreement with the measurement of the τ lepton asymmetry parameter of A_τ = 0.1439 ± 0.0043 = − P_τ(Z) at LEP. The τ lepton polarization depends on the ratio of the vector to axial-vector couplings of the τ leptons in the neutral current expression, and thus on the effective weak mixing angle sin² θWeff , independently of the Z boson production mechanism. The obtained value sin² θWeff = 0.2319 ± 0.0008(stat) ± 0.0018(syst) = 0.2319 ± 0.0019 is in good agreement with measurements at e⁺ e⁻ colliders. Ultrafine particles (UFP, those with diameters ≤100 nm), have been reported to potentially penetrate deeply into the respiratory system, translocate through the alveoli, and affect various organs, potentially correlating with increased mortality. The aim of this study is to assess long-term trends (5-11 years) in mostly urban UFP concentrations based on measurements of particle number size distributions (PNSD). Additionally, concentrations of other pollutants and meteorological variables were evaluated to support the interpretations. PNSD datasets from 12 urban background (UB), 5 traffic (TR), 3 suburban background (SUB) and 1 regional background (RB) sites in 15 European cities and 1 in the USA were evaluated. The non-parametric Theil-Sen’s method was used to detect monotonic trends. Meta-analyses were carried out to assess the overall trends and those for different environments. The results showed significant decreases in NO, NO2, BC, CO, and particle concentrations in the Aitken (25-100 nm) and the Accumulation (100-800 nm) modes, suggesting a positive impact of the implementation of EURO 5/V and 6/VI vehicle standards on European air quality. The growing use of Diesel Particle Filters (DPFs) might also have clearly reduced exhaust emissions of BC, PM, and the Aitken and Accumulation mode particles. However, as reported by prior studies, there remains an issue of poor control of Nucleation mode particles (smaller than 25 nm), which are not fully reduced with current DPFs, without emission controls for semi-volatile organic compounds, and might have different origins than road traffic. Thus, contrasting trends for Nucleation mode particles were obtained across the cities studied. This mode also affected the UFP and total PNC trends because of the high proportion of Nucleation mode particles in both concentration ranges. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood. © The Author(s) 2025.

A measurement of the Higgs boson (H) production via vector boson fusion (VBF) and its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair (bb¯) is presented using proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at s = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 fb⁻¹. Treating the gluon-gluon fusion process as a background and constraining its rate to the value expected in the standard model (SM) within uncertainties, the signal strength of the VBF process, defined as the ratio of the observed signal rate to that predicted by the SM, is measured to be μ_Hbb¯^qqh=1.01_−0.46^+0.55. The VBF signal is observed with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations relative to the background prediction, while the expected significance is 2.7 standard deviations. Considering inclusive Higgs boson production and decay into bottom quarks, the signal strength is measured to be μ_Hbb¯^incl.=0.99_−0.41^+0.48, corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.6 (2.9) standard deviations. © The Author(s) 2024.

We are developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based health management system that suggests efficient and effective interventions for keeping people healthy based on the potential risk of disease predicted by using AI. We proposed a new feature extraction model for unequally spaced medical data that improves the disease risk prediction. We introduce the model in detail in this article and also describe an application of the model that demonstrates the improved prediction accuracy. © 2018 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, an updated and comprehensive assessment of the global burden attributable to SSBs remains scarce. Here we estimated SSB-attributable T2D and CVD burdens across 184 countries in 1990 and 2020 globally, regionally and nationally, incorporating data from the Global Dietary Database, jointly stratified by age, sex, educational attainment and urbanicity. In 2020, 2.2 million (95% uncertainty interval 2.0–2.3) new T2D cases and 1.2 million (95% uncertainty interval 1.1–1.3) new CVD cases were attributable to SSBs worldwide, representing 9.8% and 3.1%, respectively, of all incident cases. Globally, proportional SSB-attributable burdens were higher among men versus women, younger versus older adults, higher- versus lower-educated adults, and adults in urban versus rural areas. By world region, the highest SSB-attributable percentage burdens were in Latin America and the Caribbean (T2D: 24.4%; CVD: 11.3%) and sub-Saharan Africa (T2D: 21.5%; CVD: 10.5%). From 1990 to 2020, the largest proportional increases in SSB-attributable incident T2D and CVD cases were in sub-Saharan Africa (+8.8% and +4.4%, respectively). Our study highlights the countries and subpopulations most affected by cardiometabolic disease associated with SSB consumption, assisting in shaping effective policies and interventions to reduce these burdens globally.

The occurrence of elevated concentrations of fluoride in the drinking water supply in many regions of the world has caused widespread prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis. In this article, the extensive literature on the routes of fluoride exposure, geographic regions with excess fluoride in water sources and various defluoridation techniques has been reviewed. It appears that important economic regions on all continents are affected by unsafe fluoride levels in fresh waters that are current or potential sources for drinking water supply. The widely accepted limit for fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L, though higher levels are also permitted, especially in low income, water scarce countries. We have discussed fluoride mobilization mechanisms in groundwater and soil environments which could be helpful in assessing the potential (long-term) potability of water from certain wells. Finally it is evident from the literature survey that no single fluoride removal technique fits for diverse technical and socioeconomic situations and there is a pressing need to develop suitable defluoridation techniques for household and community level water supply systems in order to prevent fluorosis.

Copper-zinc-tin sulfide (Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 or CZTS), a quaternary compound, behaves as an intrinsic p-type semiconductor, making it an attractive, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative as an absorber layer in photovoltaic cells. In this study, we deposited CZTS onto ITO conductive glass substrates using a single-step co-electrodeposition technique known as Cu-Zn-Sn-S (Co-Ed). The deposition process occurred at room temperature in an aqueous citrate electrolyte bath containing copper (II), zinc (II), tin (II), and sulfur. The deposition process was assisted by cyclic voltammetry to study the influence of cycle numbers, in particular 5, 10 and 15, on the structural and optical characteristics of sulfidation-free films. Scans were carried out at a rate of 20 mV/s in the potential range from −1.6 to 0 eV. CZTS thin films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis). The XRD results indicate the formation of CZTS kesterite, as evidenced by characteristic peaks. Likewise, optical analysis reveals an optical gap energy closely aligned with the optimum gap for the CZTS absorber layer (1.5 eV), making it suitable for photovoltaic applications.
