Separation of microalgae from bacterial contaminants using spiral microchannel in the presence of a chemoattractant

Cell separation using microfluidics has become an effective method to isolate biological contaminants from bodily fluids and cell cultures,such as isolating bacteria contaminants from microalgae cultures and isolating bacteria contaminants from white blood *** this study,bacterial cells were used as a model contaminant in microalgae culture in a passive microfluidics device,which relies on hydrodynamic forces to demonstrate the separation of microalgae from bacteria contaminants in U and W-shaped cross-section spiral microchannel fabricated by defocusing CO_(2) laser *** a flow rate of 0.7 ml/min in the presence of glycine as bacteria chemoattractant,the spiral microfluidics devices with U and W-shaped cross-sections were able to isolate microalgae(Desmodesmus sp.)from bacteria(***)with a high separation efficiency of 92%and 96%*** the same flow rate,in the absence of glycine,the separation efficiency of microalgae for U-and W-shaped cross-sections was 91%and 96%,*** was found that the spiral microchannel device with a W-shaped cross-section with a barrier in the center of the channel showed significantly higher separation *** microchannel chips with U-or W-shaped cross-sections were easy to fabricate and exhibited high *** these advantages,these devices could be widely applicable to other cell separation applications,such as separating circulating tumor cells from blood.

A New Modified EWMA Control Chart for Monitoring Processes Involving Autocorrelated Data

Control charts are one of the tools in statistical process control widely used for monitoring,measuring,controlling,improving the quality,and detecting problems in processes in variousﬁ*** average run length(ARL)can be used to determine the efﬁcacy of a control *** this study,we develop a new modiﬁed exponentially weighted moving average(EWMA)control chart and derive explicit formulas for both one and the two-sided ARLs for a p-order autoregressive(AR(p))process with exponential white noise on the new modiﬁed EWMA control *** accuracy of the explicit formulas was compared to that of the well-known numerical integral equation(NIE)*** both methods were highly consistent with an absolute percentage difference of less than 0.00001%,the ARL using the explicit formulas method could be computed much more ***,the performance of the explicit formulas for the ARL on the new modiﬁed EWMA control chart was better than on the modiﬁed and standard EWMA control charts based on the relative mean index(RMI).In addition,to illustrate the applicability of using the proposed explicit formulas for the ARL on the new modiﬁed EWMA control chart in practice,the explicit formulas for the ARL were also applied to a process with real data from the energy and agriculturalﬁelds.

Coral reefs, vital marine ecosystems, are highly vulnerable to thermal stress-induced bleaching. Regional-scale bleaching events are often triggered by elevated sea surface temperature (SST) associated with global warming. While sustained temperature anomalies exceeding ± 1 °C above the long-term maximum monthly mean can induce bleaching, extreme short-term warming and cooling events, known as marine heatwaves (MHW) and marine cold spells (MCS), respectively, pose significant threats. These events, characterized by prolonged periods of anomalous temperature extremes, can have far-reaching ecological and economic consequences. This study investigated the spatial distribution of MHW and MCS in the Lombok Sea and their relationship with coral bleaching. Using daily SST data from 1998 to 2022, we identified MHW and MCS events and analyzed their frequency, intensity, and duration. Additionally, Landsat imagery (Landsat 5, 6, and 7) and field surveys conducted in 2016 were employed to assess changes in coral cover over time. Our results show that the effect of MCS and MHW cause coral bleaching, particularly in years with high frequency, intensity, and duration of these events. Extreme daily intensity (anomaly of SST > 1.5 °C) of MCS in 2000 and MHW in 1998, 2016, and 2022 led to a significant decrease in coral reef cover of approximately 30%. Furthermore, we observed that large-scale climate patterns such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can exacerbate MHW (in 1998 and 2016) conditions and contribute to coral decline. These results underscore the urgent need for effective coral reef management strategies to mitigate climate change and ocean warming impacts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Naval 2025.

In the continuous pursuit of an energy-efficient alternative to the energy-intensive mechanochemical process, we developed a coprecipitation strategy for synthesizing halide-based solid-state electrolytes that warrant both structural control and commercial scalability. In this study, we propose a new coprecipitation approach to synthesized Li3InCl6, exhibiting both structural and electrochemical performance stability, with a high ionic conductivity of 1.42 × 10-3 S cm-1, comparable to that of traditionally prepared counterparts. Through the in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique, we unveil the stability mechanisms and rapid chemical reactions of Li3InCl6 under dry Ar, dry O2, and high-humidity atmosphere, which were not previously reported. Furthermore, the fast reversibility capability of moisture-exposed Li3InCl6 was tracked under vacuum, revealing the optimal recovery conditions at low temperatures (150-200 °C). This work addresses the critical challenges in structural engineering and sustainable mass production and provides insights into chemical reactions under real-world conditions. © 2024 The Authors. Emerging Infectious Disease of Coronavirus 2019 is a catastrophe of human beings. Controlling, monitoring, and forecasting the COVID-19 outbreak is very important for the authorities to make a decision on launching the policy for suppressing it. Reproduction numbers of epidemiology models and forecasting models have been developed to control and monitor the COVID-19 outbreak via policies of authorities, such as social distancing and wearing mask. Thus, the purposes of this research are to estimate the reproduction number of susceptible infectious recovered models and forecast the number of total COVID-19 cases every day based on discrete logistic models. Moreover, chaos analysis and spreading power of the number of COVID-19 cases by day are investigated with regard to COVID-19 situation in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The results showed that its spread was highest in India and the transmission potential of COVID-19 in Myanmar is higher compared to India and Bangladesh. © 2021 International Biometric Society–Chinese Region.

Equatorial currents consisting of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and Equatorial Under Current (EUC) play a significant role in the dynamics of the Indian Ocean with waters west of Sumatra. This article examines the water masses in the eastern Indian Ocean and the dynamics of the surface equatorial current at 90° BT longitude from 2° LS to 2° LU on March 1–3, 2017, as part of the Indonesia Prima 2017 expedition. NEC was detected at a depth of 5–75 m with a speed of 0–0.5 m/s to the west. EUC was detected at a depth of 75–170 m with a speed of 0.25–0.85 m/s to the east. The results of data analysis of temperature, salinity, and density indicate the intake of high-salinity water masses from the southern Indian Ocean, namely South Indian Central Water (SICW), which has a temperature range of 8.0–25.01 °C and salinity values of 34.6–35.2 PSU. SICW is carried by SEC. The movement of SEC during this study has a characteristic tendency to be asymmetrically stronger toward the north of the equator. The heat transported by the NEC is − 0.0215 PW (toward the Indian Ocean) and the EUC is 0.0347 PW (toward the west of Sumatra). There is added heat transport to the west of Sumatra by 0.0132 PW so that the thermocline layer thickens. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

A semi-analytical finite element method(SAFEM),based on the two-scale asymptotic homogenization method(AHM)and the finite element method(FEM),is implemented to obtain the effective properties of two-phase fiber-reinforced composites(FRCs).The fibers are periodically distributed and unidirectionally aligned in a homogeneous *** framework addresses the static linear elastic micropolar problem through partial differential equations,subject to boundary conditions and perfect interface contact *** mathematical formulation of the local problems and the effective coefficients are presented by the *** local problems obtained from the AHM are solved by the FEM,which is denoted as the *** numerical results are provided,and the accuracy of the solutions is analyzed,indicating that the formulas and results obtained with the SAFEM may serve as the reference points for validating the outcomes of experimental and numerical computations.

Using video dubbing to foster college students’ English-speaking ability

While previous studies have focused on the outcomes of using dubbing apps to foster learner’s development of English-speaking ability, this study, grounded in cognitive apprenticeship (CA), is an investigation of the learning processes, which included modeling, coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection, and exploration, involved in the use of a dubbing app, Mofunshow. Participants included 26 college students at a science and technology university in Taiwan. Data included GEPT speaking pre-and post-test scores, initial and final dubbing videos, learning logs, and reflective essays. The results showed that after engaging in video dubbing the students improved their English-speaking ability, in terms of accuracy and fluency. Coaching and modeling were ranked as the two most useful processes which supported students as they improved their English-speaking ability through repeatedly listening, echoing, and imitating. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Physics-informed neural networks for modeling water flows in a river channel

The impacts incurred by floods regularly affect the planets population, inflicting social and economic problems. Optimal control strategies based on reservoir management may aid in controlling floods and mitigating the resulting damage. To this end, an accurate dynamic representation of water systems is needed. In practice, flood control strategies rely on hydrological forecasting models obtained fromconceptual or data-drivenmethods. Encouraged by recent works, this research proposes a novel surrogate model for water flow in a river channel based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). This approach achieved promising results regarding the assimilation of real-data measurements and the parameter identification of differential equations that govern the underlying dynamics. This article investigates PINN performance in a simulated environment built directly from a configuration of the Saint-Venant equations. The objective is to create a suitable model with high prediction accuracy and scientifically consistent behavior for use in real-Time applications. The experiments revealed promising results for hydrological modeling and presented alternatives to solve the main challenges found in conventional methods while assisting in synthesizing real-world representations. Impact Statement-The research seeks to contribute to the hydrological modeling area with a surrogate model based on physicsinformed neural networks (PINNs) to water flow in a watershed. In practice, thesemodels use conceptual or *** models to reach the precision provided by themethodology use large numbers of physical parameters. These parameters can demand deep knowledge about the environment and are possibly hard to identify in a complex basin.
