Given a budget on total model size, one must decide whether to train a single, large neural network or to combine the predictions of many smaller networks. We study this trade-off for ensembles of random-feature ridge regression models. We prove that when a fixed number of trainable parameters are partitioned among K independently trained models, K = 1 achieves optimal performance, provided the ridge parameter is optimally tuned. We then derive scaling laws which describe how the test risk of an ensemble of regression models decays with its total size. We identify conditions on the kernel and task eigenstructure under which ensembles can achieve near-optimal scaling laws. Training ensembles of deep convolutional neural networks on CIFAR-10 and a transformer architecture on C4, we find that a single large network outperforms any ensemble of networks with the same total number of parameters, provided the weight decay and feature-learning strength are tuned to their optimal values. Large-scale cyber attacks using IoT devices have increased in recent years. One of the strategies to deal with this problem is the use of penetration test techniques. The aim of this study was to develop a vulnerability assessment for an IoT M2M node that uses GSM technology. A test scenario was designed consisting of a GMS network created using USRP N210 and OpenBTS radios in a multicell configuration. An IoT-GSM node was designed from a sim8001 radio module, used in several M2M devices. The IoT node stores the measurements of the radio bases operational parameters that make up the GSM network. An algorithm for controlling an attacking base radio was designed using the OpenBTS API, which allows the deployment of a 'man in the middle' attack. The entire test deployment can be carried out remotely. Analysis of the results of the measurements obtained lets us understand the attack's behavior in detail and determine the IoT-GSM node's vulnerability. The results obtained show the potential of SDR and OpenBTS technology as penetration test tools to analyze vulnerabilities of IoT systems. © 2020 IEEE.

Mammography is known as one of the best forms to screen possible breast cancer in women, and recently deep learning models have been developed to assist the radiologist in the diagnosis. However, their lack of interpretability has become a significant drawback to their extended use in clinical practice. This paper introduces a novel approach for detecting and localising pathological findings in mammography exams through the use of a EfficientNet-based deep learning model. The model is trained using cropped segments of labelled pathological findings from Vindr Mammography Dataset. Achieving an average F1-score of 72.7 %, and reaching on mass and suspicious calcifications an F1-Score of 79.9 % and 84.5 % respectively. Using this classifier we propose a method to visualise from local information the regions of interest where pathological findings could be present on the complete image. Plus, we describe the limitations regarding area coverage of these patches on the model’s capability of generalization and certainty on its predictions, explaining its functionality.

In this study, we demonstrated a novel micro periodic domain (MPD), results in rough surface on a silicon wafer, formed by self-assembled nano particles (SANP) and observed a 100 fold improvement in SERS signal for detection of Colon cancer miRNA21 on Au coated nano mushroom periodic domains compared to uniform nano mushroom domain on Si wafer. The single layer deposition on Silicon wafer is achieved by using the in house developed self-assembly deposition technique . The mono layer retains the shape of hexagonal arrangement in between nano particles and forms a periodic micro domains. © 17CBMS-0001.

Shape-Tunable BaTiO3 Crystals Presenting Facet-Dependent Optical and Piezoelectric Properties

BaTiO3 octahedra, edge-, and corner-truncated cubes, and cubes with four tunable sizes from 132 to 438 nm are synthesized by a solvothermal growth approach. Acetic acid treatment can cleanly remove BaCO3 impurity. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra help to confirm the particles have a tetragonal crystal structure. The crystals also exhibit size- and facet-dependent bandgap shifts. BaTiO3 octahedra show larger piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and pyroelectric effects than truncated cubes and cubes. The measured dielectric constant differences should be associated with their various facet-dependent behaviors. Piezoelectric nanogenerators fabricated from BaTiO3 octahedra consistently show the best performance than those containing truncated cubes and cubes. In particular, a nanogenerator with 30 wt.%-incorporated octahedra displays an open-circuit voltage of 23 V and short-circuit current of 324 nA. The device performance is also highly stable. The maximum output power reaches 3.9 µW at 60 MΩ. The fabricated nanogenerator can provide sufficient electricity to power light-emitting diodes. This work further demonstrates that various physical properties of semiconductor crystals show surface dependence. © 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Two new non-withanolidal steroids with a cross-conjugated dienone structural unit in ring A, capnesterones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the soft coral Capnella imbricata in the southeast waters of Taiwan. The compounds' structures were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including IR, ESIMS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR, and through comparison with previous literature. At a concentration of 10 μM, steroids 1 and 2 exhibited reductions in iNOS levels (60 % and 82 %) compared to LPS-stimulated control cells, along with increased release (134 % and 110 %) against COX-2 protein expressions. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of Europe

Proteins sample an ensemble of conformers under physiological conditions, having access to a spectrum of modes of motions, also called intrinsic dynamics. These motions ensure the adaptation to various interactions in the cell, and largely assist in, if not determine, viable mechanisms of biological function. In recent years, machine learning frameworks have proven uniquely useful in structural biology, and recent studies further provide evidence to the utility and/or necessity of considering intrinsic dynamics for increasing their predictive ability. Efficient quantification of dynamics-based attributes by recently developed physics-based theories and models such as elastic network models provides a unique opportunity to generate data on dynamics for training ML models towards inferring mechanisms of protein function, assessing pathogenicity, or estimating binding affinities. © 2022 The Authors

Chemical additives to perovskite precursors constitute a predominant route to passivate defects in perovskite films and improve carrier charge dynamics. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) with chloride and iodide anions are used as additives for bulk passivation of perovskite films. The ionic liquids in the form of 1‑butyl‑4-methylpyradinium iodide (IL-I) and 1-ethylimidazolium chloride (IL-Cl) are mixed individually with a precursor of Cesium Formamidinium Lead Triiodide and Methylammonium Chloride (CsFAPbI3−MACl). The decay of charge carriers within the perovskite film before and after passivation with ILs was measured by Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (TRPL). The effect of added ILs on the recombination rate of the photocarriers was investigated by analyzing the decay of the TRPL signal in all samples. The average lifetimes obtained within one day of preparations were 79 ns, 73 ns and 275 ns for pristine perovskite, IL-I passivated perovskite and IL-Cl passivated perovskite films, respectively. These values show that the presence of the IL with chloride anion greatly improves the average lifetime of the charge carrier by around 250%, while IL with iodide anion decreased the lifetime by 32% as compared with the pristine perovskite sample. This finding renders the IL-Cl passivated perovskite films as a valuable resource in applications ranging from photoelectric to hydrogen generation devices. © 2023
