The paper presents a sensor for measuring the dielectric constant of solids and liquids, based on Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Line (CRLH-TL) structure. For the proposed sensor, the operating principle and the fabrication technology are described in detail. The sensor utilizes a novel CRLH unit cell approach which separate coaxial line Right-Handed (RH) and substrate based Left-Handed (LH) components. For sensing applications, CRLH structures can exhibit high sensitivity and at the same time have the advantage of scalability in frequency and size and have the ability of conformal adaptation to the sensing task [1]. For proof of concept, a coaxial transmittance type sensor is realized and tested in a dedicated measurement setup with different grains and seeds. © 2019 EuMCE.

In an era marked by a growing demand for sustainable energy solutions and resilient disaster management systems, the convergence of innovative technologies holds the promise of addressing multifaceted challenges. This manuscript explores the multifunctional capabilities of the "smart maracas", a novel triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) designed to harvest mechanical energy and simultaneously serve as an earthquake sensor. The smart maracas is a striking example of the potential of TENGs to harness mechanical motion for practical applications. The device converts mechanical energy into electrical power through meticulous engineering, opening avenues for self-sustaining power sources in various domains. The manuscript outlines the device's structural design, working principle, and real-time applications, spanning bio-mechanical energy harvesting, vibrational energy scavenging, rotational energy harvesting, and a unique sensing application for door monitoring. A pivotal aspect of this research revolves around the smart maracas' role as an earthquake sensor. Rigorous experiments were conducted to assess the device's responsiveness to simulated seismic forces. Notably, a linear relationship with an R² value of 0.9989 was established between the voltage generated by the smart maracas and seismic acceleration. This remarkable correlation underscores the device's precision and reliability in detecting seismic events, opening doors for cost-effective earthquake monitoring solutions. © 2023, The Authors. As recent trends in manufacturing engineering disciplines show a clear development in the sustainable as well as economically efficient design of forming processes, monitoring techniques have been gaining in relevance. In terms of monitoring of product properties, most processes are currently open-loop controlled, entailing that the microstructure evolution, which determines the final product properties, is not considered. However, a closed-loop control that can adjust and manipulate the process actuators according to the required product properties of the component will lead to a considerable increase in efficiency of the processes regarding resources and will decrease postproduction of the component. For most forming processes, one set of component dimensions will result in a certain set of product properties. However, to successfully establish closed-loop property controls for the processes, a systematic understanding of the reciprocity of the dimensions after forming and final product properties must be established. This work investigates the evolution of dimensional accuracy as well as product properties for a series of forming processes that utilize different degrees of freedom for process control. © 2023, The Authors. Increased global awareness and the selective ban on bisphenol A (BPA) toxicity have prompted manufacturers to seek alternatives. Bisphenol S (BPS) emerges as one such alternative for potential food packaging replacement. However, BPS is not exempt from toxicity concerns. In this study, we demonstrate a straightforward method using a polyaniline/chitosan (PANI/Cht) composite drop-coated onto a screen-printed carbon electrode to selectively and sensitively detect BPS in food samples. PANI/Cht sensitivity was optimized through Box Behnken Design, considering factors such as dosage, pH, and contact time. ANOVA analysis highlighted dosage and contact time as significant in sensitive BPS detection. The PANI/Cht sensor exhibits excellent linearity (0.2–50 µM) with a low detection limit of 18.65 nM. Furthermore, the sensor showcases satisfactory reproducibility, selectivity, long-term stability, and recoveries for spiked BPS in real food matrices.

Robust lane information is critical for lateral control system. It brings possibilities for control system to operate in strict conditions such as no lane mark detected and fuzzy lane mark because of camera limit. Also, due to the time-consuming image processing, the sample rate of lane information is always so low for control systems to make precise control. In order to deal with the problems mentioned above, IMU dynamic information is adopted and fused with the lane information from camera as a new method. It provides instant and more robust lane information for the lateral control system to operate beyond the limits of camera. A Model-in-the-loop(MiL) simulation based on PreScan-CarSim integration is built up to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. A comparison on Lane Following System(LFS) with/without sensor fusion when temporal failure of lane information occurs is made. It approves that the proposed method successfully provides accurate high sample-rated lane information and have LFS control the vehicle to travel inside the lane with less lateral deviation.

Polyaniline (PANI) is a suitable material to be used as sensor for dissolved ammonia (DA) detection. PANI has conducting properties based on the fact that PANI structure contains pi (π) electron. In this study, polyaniline was synthesized from aniline monomer by cyclic voltammetry method on Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) screen printed electrode (SPE). The optimum concentration of aniline monomer was 0.5 M in 1.0 M sulphuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) which gave the highest current density (38 mAcm -2 ) upon electropolymerization on PEDOT SPE. The deposition of emeraldine salt (ES) of PANI was observed at +0.5 V (oxidation) and -0.2V (reduction). ES was then reacted with DA producing emeraldine blue (EB). The calibration of PANI sensors to DA solution (10 - 250 ppb) showed that the current density increased linearly with the rising trace amount of DA concentration. In terms of reproducibility, PANI sensor showed consistency in DA detection of 7.47 % deviation of mean current density readings towards 10 ppb DA solution. Here, PANI-PEDOT DA sensor was able to detect the trace DA concentration (10 ppb) which Nessler method unable to detect at this very low concentration of DA. Hence, this sensor was applied in DA detection in fish aquarium water samples. Thus, PANI-PEDOT SPE was able to perform as a DA sensor and can be further developed and commercialized for future uses.

With the consciousness of driving safety growing increasingly, traffic and transportation industry have been devoted to developing Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) recently to help drivers observing the variation of the environmental conditions around the vehicle. Monocular camera is the essential sensor in ADAS to capture the information around the vehicle. Therefore, vision based technology is the main methods to detect obstacles. ADB systems typically exploit a camera that detect the front road view, if the system detect preceding vehicles or oncoming vehicles, the distribution of beam will changed to avoid glare other driver's eyes. Consequently, vehicle detection at nighttime condition is the critical part of an ADB system. This study implements a nighttime vehicle detection method exploiting a RCCC sensor to replace Bayer sensor and aim to obtain a better quality of images at night. Candidate region selection is based on spatiotemporal analysis and three global verifications are adopted to reduce the false detecting results. A new adaptive tracking by-detection framework based on structured output prediction is applied with the detection process. © 2017 IEEE.
