In this paper, we consider the problem of association of wireless stations (STAs) with an access network served by a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a 3G cellular network. There is a set of WLAN Access Points (APs) and a set of 3G Base Stations (BSs) and a number of STAs each of which needs to be associated with one of the APs or one of the BSs. We concentrate on downlink bulk elastic transfers. Each association provides each ST with a certain transfer rate. We evaluate an association on the basis of the sum log utility of the transfer rates and seek the utility maximizing association. We also obtain the optimal time scheduling of service from a 3G BS to the associated STAs. We propose a fast iterative heuristic algorithm to compute an association. Numerical results show that our algorithm converges in a few steps yielding an association that is within 1% (in objective value) of the optimal (obtained through exhaustive search); in most cases the algorithm yields an optimal solution.

Unit test is major part of the software quality assurance. The unit test quality directly affects the software quality. The software enterprise takes more and more attention on unit test. However, beside the mature technical, tools and process of unit test, the effect of unit test is not very good. Base on an overall analysis of the unit test work, the paper indicates that people is the kernel and ties of the test jobs. The key point to improve the unit test level is the improvement of the Personal Capability of test personnel. The paper introduces the concepts of capability and Personal Capability in unit test. The three characters of Personal Capability for unit test are test efficiency, test quality and forecast. Personal Capability is reflected and developed by specific activities and practices. Three key practices for capability improvements are plan practice, track practice and evaluate and improve practice. The paper introduces three key practices in detail. An enterprise case is studied and the result shows that the experience of Personal Capability improvement process will provide foundation for next turn of improvement activities, and act as reference to the software enterprise that want to improve their unit test process.

Large-scale scientific research often relies on the collaborative use of Grid and e-science infrastructures that provide computational or storage related resources. One of the ideas of these modern infrastructures is to facilitate the routine interaction of scientists and their workflows with advanced problem solving tools and computational resources. While many production Grid projects and e-science infrastructures have begun to offer services for the usage of resources to end-users during the past several years, the corresponding emerging standards defined by GGF and OASIS still appear to be in flux. In this paper, we present the GridBean technology that bridges the gap between the constantly changing basic Grid or e-science infrastructures and the need of stable application development environments for the Grid users. © 2006 IEEE.

Complex software systems typically involve features like time, concurrency and probability, where probabilistic computations play an increasing role. It is challenging to formalize languages comprising all these features. In this paper, we integrate probability, time and concurrency in one single model, where the concurrency feature is modelled using shared-variable based communication. The probability feature is represented by a probabilistic nondeterministic choice, probabilistic guarded choice and a probabilistic version of parallel composition. We formalize an operational semantics for such an integration. Based on this model we define a bisimulation relation, from which an observational equivalence between probabilistic programs is investigated and a collection of algebraic laws are explored. We also implement a prototype of the operational semantics to animate the execution of probabilistic programs

The growing computational and storage needs of several scientific applications mandate the deployment of extreme-scale parallel machines, such as IBM's BlueGene/L which can accommodate as many as 128 K processors. One of the challenges when designing and deploying these systems in a production setting is the need to take failure occurrences, whether it be in the hardware or in the software, into account. Earlier work has shown that conventional runtime fault-tolerant techniques such as periodic checkpointing are not effective to the emerging systems. Instead, the ability to predict failure occurrences can help develop more effective checkpointing strategies. Failure prediction has long been regarded as a challenging research problem, mainly due to the lack of realistic failure data from actual production systems. In this study, we have collected RAS event logs from BlueGene/L over a period of more than 100 days. We have investigated the characteristics of fatal failure events, as well as the correlation between fatal events and non-fatal events. Based on the observations, we have developed three simple yet effective failure prediction methods, which can predict around 80% of the memory and network failures, and 47% of the application I/O failures

The measurement of light scattering is a well established scientific method for the analysis of particle sizes in macromolecular solutions. The spectrum of applications reaches from physics, over pharmacology, molecular and cell biology, immunology right up to environmental research. The underlying principle of this approach is the extraction of spectral information from light scattering using correlation techniques. The Model Driven Approach (MDA)as supported by the Object Management group (OMG) seems to be one of the most promising approaches for designing and developing software applications. MDA describes the structural requirements of an engineering discipline where models, instead of source code, comprise the primary artifact. Model Driven engineering (MDE), as outlined by Stuart Kent, brings forth the dynamic aspects of engineering, where models design and transformation are equally important. This paper is a first investigation of the model-driven paradigm enactment using established architecture-centric concepts. It introduces the orchestration of models inside the OntMDE design process. In the depicted process, a distinction is made between two major levels, one is the architecture level of transformation and the other is the implementation level of transformation. We believe that the architecture of model is independent from any platform implementation. Therefore, the architectural considerations that are independent of platforms' considerations must be dealt with at Platform Independent Model (PIM) level. For that, PIM will be decomposed into two models: an Architecture Independent Model (AIM) and an Architecture Dependent Model (ADM). Secondly, domain ontology is used as marking technique to label the AIM and the architectural ontology description is provided to generate an ADM. We think that the use of an ontology representing domain design knowledge can be a way to bridge the gap between abstract and concrete models and to automate the model transformation process.

The paper recasts the problem of feature location in source code as a decision-making problem in the presence of uncertainty. The main contribution consists in the combination of two existing techniques for feature location in source code. Both techniques provide a set of ranked facts from the software, as result to the feature identification problem. One of the techniques is based on a scenario based probabilistic ranking of events observed while executing a program under given scenarios. The other technique is defined as an information retrieval task, based on the latent semantic indexing of the source code. We show the viability and effectiveness of the combined technique with two case studies. A first case study is a replication of feature identification in Mozilla, which allows us to directly compare the results with previously published data. The other case study is a bug location problem in Mozilla. The results show that the combined technique improves feature identification significantly with respect to each technique used independently

The data set of batch biological and biotechnological processes can be organized in a three-way data matrix. In this paper the usefulness of different PCA approaches for monitoring is analyzed. Different ways of unfolding and scaling of data have been applied to a pilot-scale SBR data. PCA is used to reduce the dimensionality and to remove the non-linearity dynamic of the data. Moreover, a new method to select the number of principal components is proposed. Loadings graphics are used to determinate the predominant variables for each one. The results show that whatever model can be applied depending on the goal of the monitoring, however the models implicate possible false alarms or faults omission.
