Self generating neural networks have been presented as a better alternative to fixed structure networks in data mining applications. It has also been shown that the nearest prototype classifier is functionally equivalent to an alternative fuzzy classifier model. Several supervised neural networks have been developed to generate nearest prototypes which can be converted to fuzzy rules. We present an extended version of our growing self-organising map (GSOM) model which can also be used to identify nearest prototypes for generating fuzzy rules.

Repetitive, or multipass, processes are a class of 2D systems of both practical and algorithmic/theoretical interest whose dynamics cannot be analysed or controlled using standard (1D) systems theory. Recently it has been shown that the modelling of the boundary conditions, also known as the process initial conditions, is a crucial feature in the analysis and control of these processes. This paper presents some further results on the effects of so-called 'dynamic' process initial conditions on the controllability and stability properties of discrete linear repetitive processes. Previous work has shown that these dynamic process initial conditions alone can destroy the stability properties of these processes. Hence their effects must be 'adequately' accounted for the process modelling stage in order to ensure that subsequent analysis does not lead to incorrect results/conclusions. The main results developed in this paper can be summarised as follows. (i) Computationally efficient stability tests which can, in effect, be applied using standard, or 1D, linear systems tests. (ii) Characterisation of so-called pass controllability in the form of matrix rank based conditions. (iii) Conditions under which the dynamic process initial conditions can be selected to ensure stability and pass controllability.

A fully automatic adjustment system for mass production of the optical head for magnetooptical disk drives is described. The optical head is composed of millimeter scale optical components, such as laser diode, the collimator lens, the object lens, various prisms and various detectors. A series of algorithms composed of measurement, recognition, calculation of manipulation, execution of manipulation, verification and fixation ensures proper adjustment of the head. The key is to process the measured value, recognize the shape of the beam and the waveform, and determine the manipulation. With this system, the adjustment process is reduced to 6 minutes, as compared to 9 hours it takes an experience worker.

There is currently an enormous interest in the concept of software architecture, largely induced by the concept of architectural patterns first introduced by the architect Christopher Alexander (Alexander, 1979;Alexander et. al, 1977). We feel that some of the earlier work on software and system architectures has not benefited sufficiently from a deeper understanding of the complexity of the act of architecting in its home discipline: the built environment. This has lead to a confusion between fine-grain constructional mechanisms and techniques, and the overall, coarse-grain, software architectures that should in some way reflect original problem domains. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Monitoring and measuring industrial software processes are necessary for understanding processes and establishing baselines for process improvement. In this paper we monitor and measure the capability of experienced software developers to predict software change caused by new requirements to an existing software system (i.e. impact analysis) at different levels of granularity. The study shows a general underprediction and that the accuracy of the prediction deteriorated with increasing level of detail. The results were non-intuitive for the practitioners participating in the study and therefore important to consider when revising current processes and cost models based on such estimates. The study is a good example of how software industry can co-operate with university researchers in monitoring, measuring and evaluation of current practices. The results will be used by the organization as a baseline for further studies of subsequent releases of the product. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

For testing to be focused and efficient during object oriented design and development, it is necessary to detect and analyse problematic constructs. Measures of detection must be simplistic but meaningful. Due to the iterative nature of system development, measurement effort must be automatic or negligible. It is argued that currently available measures are used, but effort is put into understanding what the results mean for maintenance and testing. Design based metrics can be used to outline the maintenance cost. Reducing the effort in performing and checking system alterations radically affects the overall cost of system development.

A fundamental problem associated with libraries of software components is that of retrieval: how to find specific components that can be used in the construction of a particular application. Approaches to this problem can be classified into three categories based upon the way components are represented: synthetic classification, structural matching and behavioral matching. The objective of the paper is to unify these existing approaches to the component retrieval problem into a formally specified framework, thereby enabling a rigorous description of integrated retrieval schemes.

We describe a data analysis method using a structure adapting neural network with two additional layers. The neural network used is an extended version of a self-organising feature map which can adapt its structure to better represent the clusters in data. Once the clusters are identified, we use two additional layers on the feature map to analyse the clusters and the representation of attributes in the clusters. Simulations and initial results with two simple benchmark data sets are also described.

This empirical study analyzes changes in C++ source code which occurred between two releases of an industrial software product and compares them with entities and relations available in object-oriented modeling techniques. The comparison offers increased understanding of what changes can and cannot be described using such object models. The goals were to investigate if the object model in this particular project is either abstract and stable or detailed and sensitive to change, and whether or not changes made to the C++ source code are visible in the object model. Four metrics for characterization of change are formally defined and used, namely correctness, completeness, compliance, and visibility factor. The major finding is that even though many of the classes are changed, the majority of these changes turn out to be invisible in the object model. That is, changes made on the source code level are of a finer granularity than available in common object modeling concepts. This may explain why object models seem to be of little use in release-oriented development.
